Check, and display, AIM status on rails page
Thought I''d post this in case it''s of use to anyone. Maybe even a recipe? It''s just some simple helpers to show AIM status on a webpage. I searched before coding it, and didn''t find anything similar. Maybe that''s because it was so simple :) These methods belong in a helper (such as app/helpers/application_helper.rb) # begin AIM helper methods def

Deciphering an error message
Hello, I'm working in spatstat and having difficulty with the ppp objects. I can get a ppp object for one set of data, but with the same code applied to a second data set (all I am changing is the field identifier), I get the following error message: Error in switch(w$type, rectangle={: internal error: some total scores are neither 0 nor 1 Any thoughts on what this means and how to correct

TMG -- MS Visual Foxpro errors
I'd like very much to be able to run "The Master Genealogist" under Wine. TMG is a MS Visual Foxpro application for genealogy database work. On my Kubuntu 6.10 system I have successfully downloaded and installed Wine 0.9.30, and then installed TMG ver. 6 including updates to 6.12, the current version. During TMG installation, there was a problem with a lack of

By default, it is a good idea to follow llvm coding conventions instead of copying violation of coding style from

Wine/Interix -- The pros and cons.
I was thinking about running Wine on Interix (the POSIX layer of Microsoft's Services for Unix). There are a few apparent unknows: Would Wine load the .dll.so's? Since Interix uses PE for it's native format (running on Windows, duh), Would Wine load the .dll.so's? Would it reject them being in PE format and having the 'POSIX Layer' attribute set, or could we hack on a

DBase File locking issues
Hi All, I am experiencing issues with the use of DBase files on a Samba 2.0.5a share, that appear to be due to locking problems. Basically, I have test programs for both DOS and Win32 that does nothing but append records to a DBase database (DBF/MDX files). If more than one client PC is appending to this file, data loss occurs. I get random data loss, with records lost, and index file

VoiPSupply Dot Com
I tried calling their toll free number and toll number last week in the morning and afternoon and was handed a recording saying this number is no longer in service. The web site was up but there was no message on the site as to why the phone numbers were not working. I just called the number now and it is working. Being around the internet for a quite a long time this gives me an uneasy

Getting the real names of variables within functions
Greetings. These days I find myself writing a lot of functions to handle routine things. One of these is a function to create a scatterplot of variables and draw a lowessed line so I can get some idea if there's any relationship between them. lowessed.plot <- function(x, y) { plot(x, y) lines(lowess(x, y)) } However, there's a slight problem: the plot axes come out labeled

Exporting tables to RTF?
Greetings. Yesterday I managed to jury-rig a system to get a table out of R and import it into Nisus Writer Express (a word processor for Mac OS X). What I came up with is brittle, since it depends on an AppleScript script which has to be in a specific location and on no one touching the computer, since the AppleScript remotely controls Nisus Writer Express rather blindly and will make

Precision in R
Greetings. I'm trying to recreate in R some regression models I've done in SAS, but I'm not getting the same results. My advisor suspects this may be due to differences in precision between R and SAS. Does anyone know where I can find specifications for R's type double? (It doesn't seem to be in the R Language Definition.) Thanks in advance for any help anyone can

Wine --managed
I'm running wine, and quite oftem, I use good ol' PROGMAN.EXE as an access point to my win-apps. I launch Progman with the --managed option, but any applications I run from within Progman, are not run with this option. This is also a problem with program such as Aol Instant Messenger, when it creates its own sub windows and what not. Is there any place where I can configure how wine apps

Asterisk Voicemail that reacts to my AIM status
I hacked together a system, using an AGI script written in PHP, that looks up my AOL Instant Messenger (or in my case iChat) status, and, if I'm online, plays a different voicemail message (i.e. "Peter's here") than if I'm offline (i.e. "Sorry, Peter's not here"). Audio/video synchronization in ogm files
Hi! I made an ogm file with ogg audio and divX video. When I play it, sound and movie are not well synchronous (I played it with WMP and ashampoo). What can I do? NB: I know that this problem does not come from the audio and the divX video files, since when I make a mp3/divX avi file, it works.
