New to Wine
Hi I'm new to wine. I'm running Dapper Ubuntu, I installed Wine from the
standard repos. But I don't see any menu icons for it. I don't know how to
start using it. Is there a simple and good guide for installing apps and
using Wine?
Also is there any way to change the encoding inside the bottle? I have lots of
Chinese apps but the Chinese doesn't display properly which

darkice connection error
Wanted to give a quick update. The problem still exists but I may have
isolated the problem a bit. I tried to stream to the icecast server
using both liveice and holyshout. Neither could connect. I also had a
friend (thx vanguardist) attempt to stream remotely to my server. He
received a connection error as well. It would appear to me (in my
AMATEUR opinion) that the icecast server is not

Problems with rsync, large files and partial.
I can't seem to get rsync to restart where it left off
when I am syncing a large file (> 5GB). Below is some
info on what I have been doing. If someone has the
energy to barrel through my comments that would be
great. Out of curiosity is there an alternative to
rsync for large files?
I believe I looked all over the web for answers and I
found "partial" answers and just

Which effects are 3D and which are 2D?
AMD is dropping support for the R300-R500 cards in their official drivers:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_r500_legacy&num=1
As the current open source drivers do not support 3D, I'd like to know
which Compiz effects use 3D and which use 2D. Thanks.

Who''s using --format rdoc
I''m doing some housekeeping and just realised that the rdoc formatter
produces gibberish:
http://rspec.rubyforge.org/rdoc/files/EXAMPLES_rd.html
Will anyone protest if I just go ahead and remove it? (I can''t imagine
anyone using it, especially with the much better HTML formatter)

TRD like tool for linux?
so I found that one of my VM hosts seems to have been compromised in
some way; I've shut it down, isolated it, found a few odd things like
gibberish comments and odd hostnames that I don't recognise pointed back
to 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts. I tried TRD and it seems mildly useful, but
has more of a windowsy feel for what it wants to be able to fix. does
anyone know of something with more

Samba and " (and maybe other characters) in paths/files
Hello
I have samba installed on my server, with a fileshare. When connecting to samba, using windows, filesnames with " (double quotes) in them become gibberish on the windows client.
Under linux I connect to these fileshares using NFS, and the names are correct (I also created them this way).
I've made a screenshot: http://users.webmind.be/~glenn/samba.PNG
How can I fix this?

Sweave produces gibberish instead of apostrophe in pdf
Dear All,
I try to use Sweave to make a document. But when I use the Sweave()
command on it and build a pdf with pdflatex (3.141592-1.40.3) my
apostrophes are replaced by some gibberish (an 'a' with a hat on it, a
capital A with a arc pointing upwards on it and a capital Y with two
points on it). If I manually replace the apostrophes using the keyboard,
I get a different looking

Join a Domain in a Wine Bottle
Hi I am new to Wine. I am using it on Mac OS X 10.5.2.
Wine Bottles seem to be like OS instances or something. I need to be able to have a Wine Bottle join an Windows Domain.
The reason is for Outlook 2003. It works fine, except is always asks me for the user name, password, and domain. If the Wine Bottle was part of the domain, then this would not happen.
On a related note, would also

Asterisk 1.6.1.6 crashing
Hello all,
I have a pretty much standard installation of an Asterisk 1.6.1.6 with no
PRI cards of any type (full VoIP).
Occasionally (it happens every 2 weeks or so), it just stops running. I was
using safe_asterisk but it seems that safe_asterisk did not restart it. I do
have the core dump file at /tmp/core.myservername-2009-10-20T18:36:20+0200
but it seems it's from an earlier crash. When

Configuring BIND to answer to two domain names (four IP addresses)
On a CentOS 5 server, I am having a hard time configuring BIND to
answer to 4 IP addresses for 2 domain names.
Currently, I have four IP addresses, for sake of discussion they are:
1.1.1.1
1.1.1.2
1.1.1.3
1.1.1.4
Additionally, I have two domain names. For sake of discussion:
exampleA.com
exampleB.com
My goal is to have 1.1.1.1 & 1.1.1.2 as the nameservers for
exampleA.com, and 1.1.1.3 &

wine-users Digest, Vol 41, Issue 117
Hi David,
I have a copy of Windows that I bought a year or two ago, but never really
used it, as I preferred to use Linux.
Got it just in case I needed the license, I guess now I can put it to use.
Me paying for the Windows copy should include the fonts, right?
It's working now, and showing the fonts. Thanks a lot :-D
Now all that I have left is to get the characters to attach, and I

Grep: show me this line and the next N lines?
Can grep show the matching lines and the next N lines after a match?
For instance, I have a config file wit hthe following text:
[Tag h1]
foreground=#2e5a03
underline=double
indent=0
weight=PANGO_WEIGHT_BOLD
scale=2.25
I would ideally grep on "[Tag h1]" and have grep display the match and
the next 5 lines so that I see all the content of the h1 section.
Can this be done?
Thanks!

How to determine if file is within the prefix/bottle or not?
I'd like to put a warning into my application that warns the user if they try to store their document inside the prefix/bottle. (In other words I want to help the user avoid putting user data under the "drive_c" folder.)
I know that some folders are redirects, such as C:\Users\{user}\Desktop refers to the Desktop folder in the user's real profile, so this is safe, as well as

Wine bottle management
I found a nice program to add bottle management to wine in Linux. It wasn't mentioned in the wiki on third party apps, so I added it. But since it wasn't already there, I guess it was not commonly known, so that why I mention it here too. Worthwhile to check out.
