I was partly wrong below. The other wine application that I said starts and works OK, actually is not fully operative. That database fails as to the "search". It launchs correctly:

Invoking /usr/lib/wine/wine.bin c:\program Files\askSam\askSam6\database.exe ...

Following upgrading from etch to lenny (Debian Linux i386 gnome) the two Windods applications that I used either do not start or lack functionality.
Installed wine wine_bin wine_utils libwine_alsa _cms _gl _gphoto _ldap vers 1.0-rc1-1_print _sane. I have purged out completely all these file and reinstalled. Same errors below:

For an application with OLE embedded graphics, I got the impression that
correct functioning depends on when the graphics was placed.
---If graphics was OLE placed when the the application was running under
native OS, that file does not allow to see the graphics with the same
application running under Wine with non-native dll.

mess
I forgot to present the problem of wine failure to launch also to the wine
list.
While my amd64 debian etch is in order, 32 bit debian etch has suffered much
and is now in a state of semi-mess.

chemdraw
hi all, is anyone aware of successful attempts to run the chemistry drawing
package <chemdraw> on wine? there are reasons to consider this as a major
step in science from the point of view of linux. i can make clear my point on
demand (or see correspondence on the xdrawchem site)

Windows Genuine Advantage
If this is off subject or has already been addressed, sorry. "Windows
Genuine Advantage" looks like a move to make wine worthless. What I
mean is that M$ development API pushes windows developers' applications
to require you install IE 6.0 (soon 7.0) or later, making IE a key part
of wine. If IE requires Genuine MicroSoft (Windows Genuine Advantage)
to install, then most if not all

UDP Floods (possibly from nmbd)
Hi,
I'm new to this list but not to Samba.
I've recently been having problems with Samba that I have not
encountered (ever).
I cannot determine what the cause is but an hour or so into my dialup
connection, my machine starts flooding the first dns server in
/etc/resolv.conf with dns requests. I know it's samba responsible for
the flooding because as soon as I kill both smbd and nmbd

Bad EXE format for
I'm using Wine 0.9.11~winehq1-1 on Debian Sid.
I've been trying to install IE6 and MS Office 2000 for the last few
days. As a side note, the only way I managed to install IE6 was through
Sidenet. No luck with any other method (reg files, winetools...)
Office 2000 installs, but when I try to run the program it says:

Flooding Samba DC with random requests
Hi,
yesterday we experienced a heavy request flooding from multiple servers being a domain member against our Samba Sernet DCs.
All those servers are domain members and allow login using PAM (Samba+Winbind).
Running TCPDump we had like 400 Requests per 5 seconds like this:
tcpdump -i eth0 dst port 389
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode
listening on eth0,

syn flood protection - inside initiated attacks
Perhaps someone will help me on this :-
I have read a lot of examples of syn flood protect on the INPUT chain.
That I have no question at all.
I wonder if it make sense to perform syn flood protection
at the FORWARD chain ? If packets are originated from a
LAN worm, and are not targetted at the firewall itself, but
rather at hosts in the internet, will it cause problem with
the firewall itself,

kernel: possible SYN flooding on port 655. Sending cookies.
On a Linux Server running tincd I noticed the following log message in
/var/log/messages
kernel: possible SYN flooding on port 655. Sending cookies.
I found this on the web:
If SYN cookies are enabled, then the kernel doesn't track half open
connections at all. Instead it knows from the sequence number in the
following ACK datagram that the ACK very probably follows a SYN and a
SYN-ACK.
