Re: Strange Wine Error
Hi, I saw a thread on this subject from about a month ago and the solution presented there doesn't quite work for me so I thought I'd try to revive it: I am running Fedora Core 6. I had wine installed primarily in order to run a small dos app and it worked beautifully. Yesterday, after a reboot, FC offered to update my packages, including wine, and I agreed. Now, pretty much any wine

"Failed to open the service control manager" -- is it OK?
I'm trying to use WINE on openSuSE 10.2. I used it before on SuSE 10.0, do no remember what version was it, but I used WineTools to configure it (I actually need only IE). Now I'm trying version wine-0.9.27 SuSE RPM, from winehq site. I understood that winetools should not be used anymore (I actually tried it with wine-0.9.24 from openSuSE 10.2 without too much success). Now, the first

wine hangs on first run
I'm using a fresh install of Fedora Core 5 with the RPM install of Wine 0.9.12. When I run winecfg, it says "wine: creating configuration directory '/home/vince/.wine'..." as I expect it to. Following that is many lines of "Font metrics" progress with a few "fixme:font" messages. Nothing seems too unusual. But, when it gets to "Font metrics:

MemoriesOnWeb and wine
In http://www.edsupport.cc/mguhlin/archives/2007/08/entry_3550.htm, Miguel Guhlin asked how to install MemoriesOnWeb and its recommended codecs under Wine, so here goes. All I did was translate his instructions to wine-ese. 1. Download xvid for windows from http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html, install it the obvious way: $ wine XviD-1.1.3-28062007.exe 2. Media Player 6.4
I'm trying to install Media Player 6.4...I get up to the point just where install is saying, installing foo (foo varies, sometimes it says DirectSound, other times Codec Preinstall, or DirectEx). Then I get an error that says: "Unhandled exception <hex> at address <hex>. Do you wish to debug it?" I am running FreeBSD 4.4. Wine version is Wine release 20010824.

wineprefixcreate: msiexec.exe -- "Failed to open the service control manager"
When ~/.wine does not exist, or more specifically the system.reg does not yet exist, wineprefixcreate delivers the message "Failed to open the service control manager." I have tracked this down to the fact that HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Services does not yet exist when the msiexec.exe is registered and hence OpenSCManager fails. What is the proper way to register this key. In

File Locking
Hi- I'm running Samba on OpenSuse10.2 and have shared some drives with Windows clients. The clients are accessing a bunch of MS Word files on the server and we have experienced a lot of weird file locking problems. Sometimes MS Word will open the file as Read-Only which is creating a bit of a headache. I would like to turn off file locking completely on the Samba side and was wondering

blotched y-axis text in plot function
Hi List, I have recently upgraded to opensuse10.2 and R 2.5 (compiled from source). Now, whenever I use plot the y-axis and labels are black blotches while x-axis and labels are fine. Using demo(graphics) this occurs with plot/boxplot/hist/pairs/coplot but not in the pie graphs and in the "The level of Interest in R" plot, which uses axis to define the y-axis. I presume this has to

Help compiling an older version of wine on 64 bit Fedora 14
I'm having problems running a windows program (nulldc 1.0.3 but that's not important) under the latest version of wine, which is up and running (in 32 bit) on my 64-bit install of Fedora 14. I'm trying to compile a version of wine 1.1.32 under a separate prefix. I'm doing this in a way that has worked for me in the past under a 32-bit environment. As I say, I've compiled the

Adding a dir to PATH without using regedit (for an NFS install)
Hello Wine users, I've installed Wine 0.9.32 into an NFS-mounted dir on a RHEL 3 machine and it seems to work fine - I've even modified the /nfs_path/wine/bin/wineprefixcreate, so that an additional dir (c:/Perl) is created under ~/.wine for each user (by mere linking to /nfs_path/Perl) My problem is that currently each user of my Wine-installation has to run "wine regedit"

SAMBA rejecting passwords from Win98 clients - the fix
There have been several postings about this phenomenon and we too fell into it when we introduced Win98 clients onto the network. Somewhere on the web I found the answer: By default Win98 sends passwords to a server encrypted, and by default SAMBA compiles with encrypted passwords switched off. Therefore the password one types in from a Win98 client is received by SAMBA in an encrypted form.
