Windows Vista Issues
This is a repost of a simple question about Windows Vista and R (with answer), along with a heads-up on other Windows Vista issues that people may not be aware of and that may impact R development. 1. The standard package install process fails because the user does not have permission to write to Program Files/R/R-version/library. Apparently the install process has already been modified to give

MATLAB 6.5 under Wine
Hi, I'm completely new to Wine (I'm running version 0.9.9 under Ubuntu 6.06). I have been able to install and run Windows apps and I can see that Wine really rocks! For speed, I'd rather run Wine than VMware, especially when it comes to running MATLAB under linux. I'm having difficulty with getting MATLAB (6.5.0.180913a (R13)) to run. There are several threads in the Wine

samba setup.exe rant part 2
this was previously posted only on samba-ntdom, but that was probably not the right list so i'm cross-posting to both samba and samba-ntdom. here's the problem: on NT4 w/ SP4 or SP5, self-extracting 16-bit install files work just fine in directories w/ Long File Names. on SAMBA 2.0.5a, i can get none of the aforementioned files to install from directories w/ Long File Names. a good

Building package on Linux and Windows
Hi OK, final stretch now, thank you to everyone who has helped! (hopefully) final question - what does R CMD build actually do that tar/gzip and WinZip do not? I have successfully used R CMD build to create a .tar.gz version of my package, which installs well and works under Linux - hurray! I naively thought that all I had to do now was create a .zip version (using something like WinZip) and

[OT] Open source archive program on windows
I am looking for a recommendation for an open source competitor to Winzip. I seem to recall Brian Ripley mentioning one in the last year or so, but couldn't find it in the mail archives. (Searching on Ripley there is somehow not terribly useful.) Suggestions? opening a WinZip file
Hello I am trying to read a large number of WinZip files from inside R (v 1.7.1, options()$unzip = internal). I have unsuccessfully tried to unpack the files and write to an external directory so that I could read the text files using zip.unpack. Reading some of the archives suggests that this is for .ZIP format files only. I have also unsuccessfully tried to use gzfile to open a connection and

Rinst.exe question
Hi all, I'm using R0.99a on WinNT4. I downloaded a bunch of packages and tried using Rinst.exe to install them. For whatever reason, Rinst.exe does not find all the packages I downloaded. I put all files in the same temp directory, but Rinst only finds some of them. I have no problem installing the rest with WinZip, but if Rinst works it would be much easier (don't have to run WinZip

InstallingHi MS Java
Hi All, I tried to install MS java as mentioned in this (http://wiki.winehq.org/NativeMsJava?highlight=%28java%29) article but it didn't install although I followed the 8 steps exactly! Note: I copied and replaced advpack.dll (from windows 98 second edition) c:\windows\system to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 and ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system but it didn't fix the problem!

download of 1.9.1
Hi there, I downloaded version 1.9.1 WinZip file, 9.367 bytes ( so I can update my R and use the vcd package) but cannot get the download from your Web site to unzip and install. So silly! The error message is :" Error reading header after processing 0 entries." I tried downloading from 3 different URLs, all yielding the same message when I try to unzip and install the file.

Internet Explorer installs under wine as default Win2K but then crashes when run...
I want to run Internet Explorer as Win2K at the very least so I might be able to get updates, trying to keep up with security fixes... this might be a pipe dream? I would rather not run anything as Win98 if I can help it... In any case, what I did was, from a clean install of Wine 0.9 on Fedora Core 4, ran [user@localhost ~]$ wine wine: creating configuration directory
