Memory leaks in my site
Hi all,
My environment is ruby-1.8.4, rails 1.2.2, mongrel 1.0.1, linux 2.6. Now, i
have a problem on memory leaks with mongrel. My site is running 5 mongrel
processes on a 2G RAM machine, the memory of each process grows from about
20M to about 250M, but it never recover to the initial 20M, so i had to
restart the mongrel processes once per day. The load is about 1M hits per
day.

Instiki 0.11.0 - ActiveRecord Forever
Dear all,
If you thought Instiki was a dead project, you were right. Since I''ve got a day job that doesn''t suck
(Official Ruby Zealot of ThoughtWorks Canada), my motivation to do open source greatly sufferred :)
But... but... but! Here is Instiki 0.11.0, and in this version Instiki is (finally!) moving to ActiveRecord backend
and (finally!) has the File Upload feature.

Mongrel and memory usage
Hello,
I''m running a Rails application which must sort and manipulate a lot of data
which are loaded in memory.
The Rails app runs on 2 mongrel processes.
When I first load the app, both are 32Mb in memory.
After some days, both are between 200Mb and 300Mb.
My question is : is there some kind of garbage collector in Mongrel?
I never see the two Mongrel processes memory footprint

what is the correct way to stop/start a mongrel instance using monit with mongrel cluster
Hi --
I have been reading documentation and googling around to find the
correct way to do this but I have found many ways that seem to not
work, or the documentation makes no reference to.
I am using mongrel cluster with 10 mongrels for each server. Recently
I installed monit but which lead me to find the correct way to
start/stop mongrel instances one pid at a time. I am assuming one pid

Multiple apps on the same server, all should be able to survive slashdotting
Dear all,
I am researching solutions for "how do you squeeze as many Rails apps as you
can on a cluster" problem.
Environment constraints are as follows:
* 4 commodity web servers (2 CPUs, 8 Gb of RAM each)
* shared file storage and database (big, fast, not a bottleneck)
* multiple Rails apps running on it
* normally, the load is insignificant, but from time to time any of these
apps

Mongrel and http 1.1 OPTIONS keyword
Hello.
I just seen some errors in my mongrel application log:
It seems related to the httpd OPTIONS keyword
Example:
Processing LoginController#login (for .30.5.208 at 2007-12-10 09:00:23)
[OPTIONS]
and our ruby application does not know what to do with it. and finally
send an error
Does mongrel (which is the http server) is supposed to deal with these
kind of request ?
I think these

Gentoo warning
Hi,
I''ve done some benchmarking on our new servers (being built now), AMD X2
5600, gentoo-hardened.
With the same CFLAGS (safe cflags: -march=k8 -O2) I''ve tested the following
configs:
1, emerge ruby rubygems, then gem install mongrel (or emerge mongrel, the
performance was similar)
2, download the same ruby version, untar, ./configure, make, make install,
download rubygems,

SQLite3 + RAM drive => 3 times faster unit tests
One problem I sort of always had with the ActiveRecord''s tight coupling
to the SQL backend is how slow it makes the unit tests. OK, there are
some ways to make it faster at a price of extra complexity (reusing the
fixtures, doing a rollback in the end of the test, etc), but still - it
is much slower than what I would like a unit test to be.
Today I had a very simple idea (why, oh why

XHTML validation
Is the dashboard output of 1.2.1 supposed to validate (I get numerous
failures)? I''m seeing some issues that I hadn''t been running into
before my upgrade. The first time I load the dashboard I''m seeing a
blank area at the top and first button isn''t styled. When the refresh
triggers the all of the projects except the first are duplicated and

ANN: [Yet Another ] AJAXy Petstore
Hi all,
It''s obvious (isn''t it?) that the world needed another Petstore. If
it''s not, then let''s just say that for some esoteric reasons (to do
with training and the JRuby project), some people in ThoughtWorks
decided to create one, anyway. With rounded corners, gradient fills,
autocompletion search, yellow fade effect and sundry Web 2.0
features... but no tag

a WARNING about cruise task or user-specified build task for Rails
If (like me) you use ccrb to test a Rails app
and (like me) you define your own :cruise task, because, for
example, you use rspec rather than Test::Unit
and (like me) you have the RAILS_ENV ||= ''production'' line in
environment.rb (because, like me, you use crummy shared hosting)
Your build will run in production mode, possibly screwing up your
production database,

Again: Workaround found for request queuing vs. num_processors, accept/close
Hello all.
I too found out that I sometimes have some action that can take up to 10
seconds in my rails application. I''ve read all arguments Zed made about
polling/and inbox strategies, and I think I just can''t work around my feeling
that a "wrong" request that takes up too much time should be able to lock
subsequent requests in mongrels queue. That''s what

greetings, and first question
Hi,
Nice project. I saw the checkin for jbehave and I thought "SOLD!"
One question, is there a reason that it cannot be installed using gem?
It would make starting the server easy. Other people can also
customize the server like they do with Jetty (which I think is the
coolest servlet engine because of that).

Threshold of mongrel node processes
Hi all:
New to the list. Im enjoying mongrel. Coming from a background of
weblogic clusters this is a dream. However I have a few questions:
I have used HTTPerf to analyze metrics for an application ( rails ). My
question pertains to the CPU utilization threshold:
1) Test with single mongrel server : sustained cpu util @ 98%
2) Test with 2 mongrel nodes in a mongrel cluster with apache and

Let's make RAILS_ROOT an absolute path on Windows
As this Caboose article [] suggests, I am not the only one who had
this problem. RAILS_ROOT is a relative path on Windows, and it can
bite you in unexpected ways. I had that problem while working on
CruiseControl.rb.
There is a trivial patch fixing it (by simply applying
File.expand_path to the path before assigning it into the RAILS_ROOT
constant): http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/7259

FYI: watch out for google's web accelerator - can empty your app of data
Hi All,
A co-worker passed this info on to me:
http://37signals.com/svn/archives2/google_web_accelerator_hey_not_so_fast_an_alert_for_web_app_designers.php
The Skinny: Google has a "Web Accelerator" that pre-caches pages by
following url''s. If you have any plain/simple URL''s that don''t take
paramaters (like what often happens in rails apps), it will try to
