more about: migration center
John, I did not hear back from you right away. Maybe doing all the combinations is too big a job for one person. It might work if we split them up. I could do these two: RedHat 9 -> reinstall CentOS-3.1 RedHat 9 -> live update to CentOS-3.1 I am volunteering for these because I already have RedHat 9 and CentOS-3.1 CD's. The only rub is on Saturday I go on vacation, and at

Converting from RHEL to CentOS questions.
I have servers that are running: Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon Update 5) and Red Hat Linux Advanced Server release 2.1AS (Pensacola) [which I think RH renamed as Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 2.1]. The servers are running fine. Is it possible (and if so, how) to convert these to the equivalent releases of CentOS, without doing a complete upgrade (I want to mess with the

smbmount
Is there a method or way that will allow one to automagically mount samba shares requiring a password w/o using a plain text password? Even if I have to store the plaintext password in a file, is there at least a way to keep plain text passwords going over the network (IPSec perhaps)? === Al

Re: CentOS-2 to CentOS-3 migration
Beau, > Subject: Re: [Centos] HOWTO? Upgrade Centos-2 to > Centos-3 John Newbin has been working on a migration center. It may have some useful information; get it here: http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/centos-2/migration.htm > Correct me if I am wrong, but centos 2 > is based off or redhat 7.2, so it may work. php-snmp
Hello list. Anyone have a php rpm with snmp enabled or a php-nsmp rpm? I need to build some php pages and would like to use the snmp function that are built in. If there is another way to enable it by not using one of these rpm's that would be great too. TIA Dan

Win32 Syslinux
I've been playing with the Win32 SYSLINUX, and it fails if you're not using NT or 2K or XP. There are some differences when using it under Win95/98/ME, but is there any reason that this program couldn't just have a different codepath for those older version of Windows? <OT> RedHat support
As a parallel question to my thread about CentOS for commercial use, here's a question I've been wondering about. How many of you who have RHEL licenses and paid support licenses have ever needed actually to request support? And if you did was the support any bit more timely or accurate than community support for CentOS or other distros? -- Collins When I saw the Iraqi people

Issues/thoughts re CentOS-4
This is a list of issues for discussion for CentOS-4. Most of it is based on my experience from building/maintaining CentOS-2 and observing CentOS-3. I have not seen the CentOS-4 beta yet so I don't know if any of this is already done. If these have been discussed on IRC then perhaps someone could produce a shot summary of the outcomes....? * Just call it CentOS-4 not 4.1 etc. Too

Booting disk images with syslinux?
Is it possable to boot a diskimage with syslinux? So often I run into bios upgrade disks images or can easily create a disk image and would like an easy way to just boot these images. I know isolinux does this and I vagely remember using it to make a bootable windows 95 cd back in the day. It worked to. It would be nice if I could just copy the disk image to a usbstick and use syslinux to boot

CentOS 2.1 on i586
I've just attempted to reinstall my ancient laptop that has Pentium MMX processor. Since it is ancient, I've decided to go with CentOS 2.1. Got stuck, installer claims I need at least i686. Hmmm... I know that 3.8 and 4.4 work without a glitch on i586, so this came as surprise. I even thing original RHEL2.1 might had support for i586 too (but I might be wrong). Anyhow, what

Re: migration center
John, > I started a web page to collect my ideas > http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/centos-2/migration.htm I looked at the page collecting your ideas. That is a good start, and a good looking web page. Your wizard idea is fancier than what I had in mind. I was thinking of a table listing the starting points and in the left column and the sensible options in the right column. Then

Re: cron job madness
Hey, > check-update sounds better than putting yum update in a cron job. Only a mad man would do that! Are the cAos and CentOS releases THAT BAD? > Much better to run a daily cron which rsyncs your local patch repository. So must one have your own local repository to avoid being labeled as a madman? In which one of the RedHad reference books can I find this? Just curious. Rick

LDAP and prefetch
SunOS pop01.unix 5.10 Generic_118844-26 i86pc i386 i86pc dovecot-1.0.beta3 It is most likely something I am doing wrong, but could someone take a look at why I can not get LDAP prefetch to work? Re: RedHat/CentOS family tree
John, Your RedHat/CentOS family tree looks great! Even people who are not trying to migrate might want to take a look. For those who have not seen it yet, it is at the bottom of John's migration page, http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/centos-2/migration.htm For a general understanding how the different versions relate to each other, that picture is worth 1,000 words, easy.

Is Samba running on a Dual boot system while using w2k ?
Hi all, I'm new to Linux and Samba. I have two seperate hard drives, one has w2k and the other Red Hat Linux 7.3. Yessterday I struggeled to make the SWAT work. Then I realized that now I need to learn how to use SWAT. Before I invest time in learning how to use SWAT, my question is if I using w2k, can I access the hard drive that Linux is on and vice versa. Theis question came to my
