Ruby server infrastructure evolution -> app. servers?
All,
Just musing about this whole FastCGI thing (that I hadn''t even thought
of since 1999 when looking at OpenMarket for a customer and even then it
was "old"), and wondering when we might see projects/products that
attempt to provide Ruby application services in a J2EE-like container.
I see the Cerise project - any interesting information on that?
I''m assuming

Rails on Tomcat or JBoss?
Hi all,
The Rails book talks about running Rails under Apache, but is there a
(relatively) easy way to deploy it to either Tomcat or JBoss? Is the CGI
servlet the only option?
Thanks,
Ken

Tomcat authentication via PAM (or other system methods)?
Is there a way to coax java services running under tomcat to use the
system authentication methods set up through PAM? In my case, this would
be users in the local passwd file or through smb to a windows domain.
I've added mod_auth_pam to get this effect with apache but would like to
also handle java web services.

Managing "application scope" data - best practices
All,
I have some data that I need to be able to see across the application.
For J2EE people out there, I need something that I want to have
available in the "application scope" of my app.
What is the best way to handle this?
I''m trying to access a class variable that I created in my controller
from my view (to no avail).
Create a class variable in my helper class and use

layout question
I''m in the process of refactoring some code and getting it ready for 3.0 in
the process.
I''m trying to better modularize things as well.
I''ve got a general tomcat module, but I also have a number of tomcat
related things that only apply to one class of appserver we have.
What would be the best way of handling these?
Should I create a module, say, teamname_tomcat

(no subject)
My application has one central database + Rails server and many
distributed GUI clients. The remote clients need to read and update
different collections of ActiveRecords. They also need to submit
fairly demanding calculation + database update requests.
Have you designed a similar Ruby application? What did you do?
I''ll try to summarize the approachs I''m considering

Can someone please explain Lighttpd + Mongrel + Rails.
I know that Mongrel is a web server that hosts rails applications. But
i don''t understand what part Lighttpd (or Apache) has in the setup. I
know that you can use Mongrel on its own. What does Lighttpd improve
on?
Thanks,
Chris

Charts and Java servers
Hi,
As a long time Java/J2EE exponent I wanted to give Rails a fair crack of the
whip and after we evaluated it for several weeks I have to say I like it.
The installation process for the base system/framework is straightforward on
the two platforms we''ve tried (Windows and Mac OS X). However, the charting
components available, relying on ImageMagick or GraphicsMagick seem less
clear

fun/flamebait: Java Web Devel Stacks
I''ll pose a question partly for fun, partly out of interest to see
what everyone else is doing to survive the pain of the day job. It''s
for the professional J2EE developer converts out there.
Let''s say someone hired you to write a Basecamp clone, but it has to
be done in Java, say on the Tomcat or JBoss platform. What does your
stack look like now that you''ve

Is this an elaborate hoax/troll?
I sure hope so:

Seems like it''s getting genuine rebuttals, though. It''s actually kind

Is there a place for java in Ruby on Rails apps?
Hi all,
I''m asking this question from the standpoint of a developer with almost 10
years experience with Microsoft technologies, mostly doing server side
component and database work. So, I''m not very familiar with the java
world. Can anyon tell me how/if java development can complement Ruby on
Rails development? I''m not interested in how java can duplicate Rails

Rails and JRuby
Has anyone attempted to run Rails inside of JRuby?
Is that even possible?
Aside from the performance implications, is it a bad idea?
I''m thinking that it might be useful in very rare cases where a
Ruby/Rails - equivalent of a Java solution may not exist yet.
Any thoughts?

deployment server
Hi all,
On theserverside.com there is an article describing an interview with Bruce
Tate, where he calls Java dead like Cobol.
See: http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=39066
However in the comments, some guy comes up with a good point:
He states the following:

I couldn''t come up with a viable enterprise quality/grade deployment
platform for RoR. Even

LiteSpeed
Yo Zed,
Just curious -- what do you think of the LiteSpeed
server? Is it better than Lighty? Does it (gasp!) also
serve Rails apps like Mongrel? I think I read that
LiteSpeed doesn''t have proxying support.
Thanks,
Joe
