Double posting
I do not know if i am seeing things, but it seems
there has been a lot of double posting lately. It
seems it has been only a short while since it started.
i thought it might only been some people, though i am
seeing an increasing amounts of this lately. Is there
something going on with the list or is it a snafu that
i have noticed something.

Bind Firewall Rules
OK, so does anybody have a good firewall rule solution for what we're
supposed to be doing with bind these days? Obviously port 53 is no
longer enough.
TIA

Rid me of this boot GUI
One of these days, RedHat might actually run me off!!!! AAAARGH!!!!
Can anyone tell me how to get CentOS 4 to simply boot to the console in
text mode? If I wanted a stinkin' GUI I would have installed winders!
Now, my KVM and 25 foot cord is just too long to send a GUI signal
across the room and I'm missing 50% of the screen.. striped vertically..
at about 1/8th inch spacing. Not

Updating on CentOS-3.3
Sorry to be beating a dead horse to death here... but... in the
archives, mostly the FAQ is mentioned, but the FAQ seems to be 'coming
soon'. :)
I just did a clean install of 3.3. I am operating from the command line.
I first mistakenly ran.. been there done that on WhiteBox as well. :(
rpm --import /usr/share/rhn/RPM-GPG-KEY
Got what I understand now is the expected errors.

centos-announce list?
Any chance we can set up a low-volume "centos-announce" list so that we
all don't have to read all of these non-Centos-specific E-mail threads
about people figuring out how to admin a Linux box when all we need to
know is when major releases/milestones/news items are available?

SSH host key rotation – known_hosts file not updated
Hi,
I created new host keys on serverA, updated sshd_config accordingly
(adding the line below) and restarted ssh:
cd /etc/ssh
sudo ssh-keygen -f 2024_ssh_host_ed25519_key -t ed25519 -N ''
sudo vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config
# added line: HostKey /etc/ssh/2024_ssh_host_ed25519_key
sudo service ssh restart
When I connect to serverA (`ssh -v -o UpdateHostKeys=yes serverA`)
afterwards,

Crashing Nameservers
Had two nameservers crash in the last few hours... This 'never' happens!
On the console was
sent an invalid ICMP type 3, code 3 error to a broadcast:

CentOS 5.6 PHP 5.3 and SquirrelMail
OK, so I did an upgrade to PHP 5.3 on one of my servers. I noticed the
uninstall of php also removed SquirrelMail and it won't install under
PHP 5.3. Has anybody worked this out with a good RPM or repo solution?

Intrusion Detection Systems
Situation: We are providing hosting services.
I've grown tired of the various kiddie scripts/dictionary attacks on
various services. The latest has been against vsftpd, on systems that I
can't easily control vs. putting strict limits on ssh. We simply have
too many users entering from too many networks many with dynamic IP
addresses.

Sendmail vs. Postfix
Hah!!! This list is just too calm and mundane. The only thing we argue
about is the ''announce'' list vs. the ''user'' list. ;) So, it''s
springtime! I''m seeing all the regularly scheduled ''oil'' threads on my
motorcycle lists and thought "oh what the heck, lets get the ''oil''

CentOS 3.4 on Compaq Proliant
I am trying to install CentOS 3.4 on a Compaq Proliant 1600, and it hangs on probing monitor type when anaconda starts. I have tried running 'linux text' and manually installing drivers from the f2 options screen. Any ideas? Forgive me if this is an unbearably simple question, but I am new to linux.

bind and 3.4
Hello,
I encountered a problem when upgrading from 3.3 to 3.4 on i386.
The machine is a production name server running bind. Looks like the
new rpm moved my named.conf to .rpmsave and chkconfig'ed bind to off.
That's really bad. A more gentle behavior would have been to save the
new named.conf to .rpmnew and not mess with initscripts.
Anyone else notice that?

Funny result from rep(...) procedure
I'm observing odd behavior of the rep(...) procedure when using variables as
parameters in a loop. Here's a simple loop on a vector 'branches' that is
c(5,6,5,5,5). The statement in question is
print(c(ni,rep(i,times=ni)))
that works properly first time through the loop but the second time, when
branches[2] = 6, only prints 5 values of i.
Any ideas, anyone?

New Bind Update
I was wondering if the new bind update is going smoothly for those who
have done it?
I've been a little hesitant to run it yet as the last time forced a bit
of time fixing things. I'm trying to plan if I need to have some hours
available for this or if it is like most of the time.. just do it and
everything's ok.

Random Proliant Crashes CentOS 6.1
I've been seeing some random Proliant DL380 G4 64bit crashes. Each time,
on the console are messages relating tojbd2/cciss and something about a
waitfor 120 seconds. Is anybody else seeing anything like this? Oddly, I
can't seem to find this in the logs. I guess it can't write when this
happens.
