should cAos block access to mirror.caosity.org?
Hey, Greg suggested that I take a straw poll. Should cAos take steps to prevent getting stuck with a big ISP bill in the future? For example, should cAos: a) for new installs, have the yum.conf point to public mirrors, rather than to mirror.caosity.org? b) make sure that "yum update" does not substitute a new yum.conf file that points only to mirror.caosity.org? c) allow public

centos-announce list?
Any chance we can set up a low-volume "centos-announce" list so that we all don't have to read all of these non-Centos-specific E-mail threads about people figuring out how to admin a Linux box when all we need to know is when major releases/milestones/news items are available? Regards, -Tom

Exciting news about cAos & CentOS - Please read
I have the great pleasure to announce that the cAos Foundation has been given the right to an exhibitor booth at the upcoming LinuxWorld Expo in Boston, Massachusetts from February 15th - 17th. (More info here: http://www.linuxworldexpo.com/live/12/events/12BOS05A). This is a awesome opportunity to further cAos and CentOS linux. But I do not feel that we should give 1/2 an effort. I feel that

Enable Contributions Through Pull-request For LLVM
-1 -- switch to PR's +1 -- Hal's compromise proposal (as long as I can continue to use Phab) I agree that the documentation could be better, but I don't see that as a justification for switching from a superior tool to an inferior one. Let's work on the documentation first, then if there's still a compelling reason to switch, do it then, I share most of the concerns already

Apt and multilib arches (in CentOS-4)

Apt is currently only supported in CentOS-4 and only on the i386 arch. apt, apt-devel and synaptic are "extras" packages for CentOS-4.0 i386. That means they are included

CentOS 5 and bittorrent
Folks. This is likely to be the hardest hit CentOS has ever taken with regards to bandwidth needs. I was really hesitant to use bittorrent for this type of thing for a long time. However, it really is nice to give back at least what you take. At the moment, I'm seeing almost 3000 connections to the torrent. That times 3.5 gigs is a pretty huge chunk of data... and it has just begun. What

Wiki Choices
I have selected 4 software packages for us to evaluate in order to decide on the best possible engine for the much-requested cAos Community Wiki. All 4 samples are now up and running for you to try out, play around with, and evalute. First SSH now VSFTP
Seems the script kiddies are now hitting vsftp with dictionary attacks. I had three boxes showing around 12000 attempts from one IP yesterday. My thoughts are that there should be an upstream solution for this which is then supported by the upstream vendor. Yes, I know there are several 'other' solutions, but I'd really like to stay mainstream and use a supported method for

New Bind Update
I was wondering if the new bind update is going smoothly for those who have done it? I've been a little hesitant to run it yet as the last time forced a bit of time fixing things. I'm trying to plan if I need to have some hours available for this or if it is like most of the time.. just do it and everything's ok. Best, John Hinton

Struggling with javac
I've installed jdk-1_5_0_08-linux-i586.rpm and Tomcat. Working through some initial test install programs, I am finding that I can't seem to compile .java files into classes. For instance... javac -classpath /usr/local/tomcat/common/lib/servlet.jar HelloWorld.java as instructed fails with a gij: unrecognized option -- `-classpath' Try `gij --help' for more information. So
