IAX2 Softphone Quality & Network Cards
We are in the process of an Asterisk call center deployment using IAX2
G711 ulaw softphones. Outbound sound quality is terrible.
This week we rebuilt the entire LAN with Cisco 2950-EI switches and have
employed QoS on the switches and router. Still sounds terrible.
What we are now finding is that the network card in the PC may be the
key to the problem. A Dell Optiplex P4 2.4GHz 512MB

Bad audio quality on SIP
Hi guys,
I have the following configuration:
10 SIP softphones <--> Asterisk <--> PSTN
Audio is always good on SIP softphone side, but callers from PSTN side
*sometimes* complain that the audio quality is bad (and volume low). The
QoS is turned on on the computers where SIP softphone is installed, and
the tos setting in sip.conf is set to 0x18.
The interesting thing is that usually

Systems Admin; Telecom Newbie - What do I need?
Hi, folks. I am planning on implementing Asterisk in 2006, and need
to budget for it now, so I need to know what I'll need to get. My
company has about 50 users, and is currently languishing on a very
old Comdial PBX. All of our client computers are Macs; our servers
are mostly OS X, with a couple Debians and a Red Hat.
I am thoroughly experienced at systems administration, and can

X-Lite Softphone
Hey Everyone,
I downloaded and installed the X-Lite softphone the other day (the lite
version) and cannot seem to get it to work well.
Don't get me wrong, it registers with my asterisk server and everything
seems to work well, except the call quality really is horrible.
I thought it may be the place I was trying it at (DSL) so I took it to
the office and tried it right next to the asterisk

softphone headsets
Anybody have a suggestion for a nice inexpensive headset for mobile
users on a laptop with a softphone?
What are people using for softphones on M$ platforms? I have been using
the x-lite client. Is there something better out there?

Best USB Handset and Softphone Combination
I have a client that want to try the softphone with USB handsets route
to see if hardphones will even be needed. I always push for hardphones
(Polycom) so I am not sure about softphones or USB handsets.
This is going to be for a 300+ seat call center onsite and many offsite,
I plan on using OpenVPN for the offsite machines.
Any advice on softphones, handsets, or practical experience with

Minimalize jitter in VoIP calls
Hello list,
what can I do to minimalize the jitter in SIP-calls at server level ?
If at local network level, there is a VoIP-router and their is a
physical network dedicated to IP-phones, but there is still jitter.
When using a Hosted Asterisk server, which settings on the
Asterisk-server can minimalize the jitter between the VoIP-router and
the Asterisk-server on the public internet ??

Softphone that emulates Skype API ?
There's a large number of gadgets one can buy that work with Skype
through the API. One of the things I'm interested right now is the
ability to properly use a mobile phone headset with a SIP/IAX softphone.
Is there an softphone that emulates the Skype API?
Are there legal implications in writing an softphone that emulates the
Skype API?
Should I just give up and buy a Siemens DECT

SoftPhone on * with X-Lite or iaxComm (1 X100P card)
To all:
I am having an echo problem with X-Lite and iaxComm. I am using the
monitor speakers and a desktop microphone. My problem is that the sound
from the speakers is repeated by the microphone causing an echo that is
annoying. Is this correctable? I have searched throught this archives
and played with various settings but have not been able to fix this. I
have purchased a couple if

scratchy sound
Hi,
I'm experiencing a few (but meaningful) cases of audio distortion (or bad quality). I can't say yet how often this happens.
Please listen to the following sound file:
http://213.96.91.201/temp/distorted_audio_1.wav
This was recorded by Asterisk while the local SIP caller was dialing out a SIP trunk (so the problem is on my side, definitely, and it doesn't seem to be related to

Thirdlane Connect can be used as a softphone. It works in modern browsers (no installation is required), on Mac, Windows and Linux desktops, and on mobile phones.
Besides basic softphone functionality, it provides instant messaging, group chat (channels), voice and video conferencing, and screen sharing. It integrates with a variety of applications and CRMs such as Salesforce, Zoho, Zendesk,

Softphone (with USB headset) for Mac recommendations
Well, I have my 7940 up and running at home, and everything's working
pretty much perfectly. So, it's time to find new things to break :-).
The problem de jour is long-distance calling from work: I can use my
cell phone, but I'm in an inside office on the 42nd floor and it's
really hard to get good reception. So, I'm thinking about running a
softphone on my Mac laptop

Soft phone sound quality help
Anyone got any tips on improving sound quality on soft phones running
under Window XP SP2?
I have tried Xlite, SJPhone and Firefly.
They all seem to have significant sound quality problems. We have a
reasonable sized network of several hundred devices connected together
using Layer 2 switches, i.e. pretty dumb switches with no QoS.
I also have a Grandstream connected to the same switching gear.

Problem with chan_iax.c implimentation causesbadaudio?
We upgraded all five servers to 1.2.4. We tried trunking/notrunking.
End users use an IAX2 softphone on their desktop PCs. Agents are VLANed
and all IAX2 traffic is QoS'd on all LAN and WAN legs. Calls flow from
the agents to the local Asterisk server as IAX2/ulaw. Then they went
over the IP-VPN as IAX2/g729 (we tried ilbc and straight ulaw as well).
Calls get to the PSTN from the
