OT: firewalls
What is everyone using for a firewall? I'm currently using www.astaro.com but their recent releases have soured me on ASL as a practical solution on my hardware (1.2MHz Athlon, 30G, and 256M). I only have 4 computers going through the firewall wall but it's consistently at 50% cpu load. There is very little network traffic (<10k bits per second on the wan connection, < 40k

Out of the woodwork
Greetings Everyone, I finally got around to downloading and installing CentOS 3.1. Performed flawlessly :) Any of my whitebox friends still around here? I've been extremely busy with work as of late....I'm still considering getting involved with CentOS. -- Donavan Nelson donavan at whiteboxlinux.net http://whiteboxlinux.net

macintosh file clutter on samba filesystems.
I have a client who has a bunch of macs accessing some samba shares, and they write these ._filename and .DS_STORE files all over the place, he would perfer it to not write these files at all. Anyone ran into this issue? what would be the best way to prevent these files from getting written onto the shares? veto? -- Matt Pruett <entelin@logicaldreams.net>

Domain cannot be contacted
I have setup two samba domain controllers, both have basicly the same configs and use the same ldap database backend. Often however when logging in users will get a "domain cannot be contacted" error, attempting to login multiple times will eventually get them in and it will work fine from then on. The question is, is there anything else I really need to do to make this work correctly?

3.3beta2 on centos 6.2 seems very broken
i have been playing with 3.3beta2 for a few weeks now and i can easily create inconsistencies between replicas. my first test was to start an rsync from a client using the gluster fuse code and then reboot one of the servers. after the rsync finishes, i can see that the replicas are out of sync (which is to be expected), so i start a self-heal via find. after that has run to completion, i

Ambiguity on a CentOS dot Org Web Page.
Hi Ralph, Whilst wearing you C-devel hat, will you please have a look at a recent forum thread [1] that has highlighted the ambiguity on the CentOS Product Specification web page [2]. I'm asking this here, as I guess that page really does come under documentation . . . and you are the documentation-meister. If it is not actually your area, please let me know who's cage bars I should

40 second delay on automounts with 2.6.18-53.1.21.el5 kernel
after this latest centos 5 kernel update, i am seeing 40 second delays on automount points. nothing in the rpm changelog looks obviously related to autofs and the autofs module seems to be the same as the previous kernel. i'm starting to do some strace'ing and other debugging, but nothing has jumped out at me yet. i'm hoping someone else has seen it so i know i'm not alone

core 2 duo motherboards and centos 4
from my googling around, it doesn't look there is a single motherboard that supports core 2 duo and works without patches or tweaks. is that true? the main thing we want is: core 2 duo support 4g of 800mhz (or better) ram sata gig ether with pxe boot we can live without pata or usb for a while. we've tried intel 965 and asus p5b based boards with various levels of ease of install,

mcollective scalability
I''ve been thinking a lot about running mcollective on my production servers recently, especially about its nice integration with puppet (using facts and so on). However I''ve got some concern about its scalability - how publish/subscribe middleware scales in terms of speed and flooding the network. I run about 2000 servers. Has anyone got any experience running mcollective on

strange string in /etc/shadow
Hi, I am using puppet (version 0.25.5-1.e15 for redhat) for password management for non-system users. This morning, users on some of my puppet clients had their encrypted password strings in /etc/shadow replaced with the following string: YAML::syck::BadAlias That has effectively broken the users'' ability to login to those servers. Puppet will not overwrite that string with the

Red Hat Legal Targets www.centos.org website content
To squelch the questions (related to the changing content on www.centos.org), I decided this needs to be published. The CentOS Team has been contacted by representatives of Red Hat's hired legal team regarding the use of Red Hat Trademarks on www.centos.org. (Full Email follows.) While the CentOS team feels we are using Red Hat's marks in a fair and legal manner, we have no choice
