Simple Install of x86_64 CentOS 5 is failing
It gets all the way through the install, and then when it reboots, grub can't find the kernel. Grub can't find the kernel because the kernel was not instaled for some reason? I looked at the box through rescue mode and in /boot there is no kernel. Any ideas what might have happened? Cheers...james

rpm corruption
I have recently deployed a number of CentOS-3.4 boxes and I am seeing problems with rpm database apparent corruption. db4 errors like DB_PAGE_NOTFOUND. I have found that using LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 seems to fix the problem but I can''t find much info on why or if doing that is good or bad. I have done --rebuilddb but with the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL that might be making thinks worse... I just

Using raid 1 for rollback purposes
Hi All, For quite some time I've used raid 1 as a means of providing a rollback mechanism for an upgrade (which I learned from others long ago). So essentially, before an upgrade you split the mirrors and upgrade one side or the other. If your upgrade goes well you sync one way, if your upgrade does not you sync the other (much hand waving and chanting going on, as its more complicated than

Slow logout from gnome
I don't know if anyone else has had this problem but on a number of CentOS-3 boxes I had a problem when you log out from X/Gnome it would take ages (> 1 min) to log out. Saving the session made it quicker for the next logout, but the culprit appears to be the rhn-applet. Uninstall that rpm and problem solved. CentOS + GFS + EtherDrive
I am considering building a pair of storage servers that will be using CentOS and GFS to share the storage from a Coraid (SATA+Raid) EtherDrive shelf. Has anyone else tried such a setup? Is GFS stable enough to use in a production environment? There is a build of GFS 6.1 at http://rpm.karan.org/el4/csgfs/. Has anyone used this? Is it stable? Will I run into any problems if I use CentOS 3.5

/dev/console not getting created...
Hi All, I've been trying to put together a one off CentOS 4 based distro, and I ran into some trouble. First off just so you know we've been doing this with CentOS 3 and with RedHat 9 before that, so the inexperience is only with the delta between CentOS 3 and CentOS 4 (and RHEL 3 and RHEL 4 by extension). Anyway, the problem is that for some reason /dev/console is not getting created.

smbmount
Is there a method or way that will allow one to automagically mount samba shares requiring a password w/o using a plain text password? Even if I have to store the plaintext password in a file, is there at least a way to keep plain text passwords going over the network (IPSec perhaps)? === Al

Converting from RHEL to CentOS questions.
I have servers that are running: Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon Update 5) and Red Hat Linux Advanced Server release 2.1AS (Pensacola) [which I think RH renamed as Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 2.1]. The servers are running fine. Is it possible (and if so, how) to convert these to the equivalent releases of CentOS, without doing a complete upgrade (I want to mess with the

Problem with cups print job name
For some time I had been running samba 3.0.10 from RHEL4. I have a samba -> cups -> pdf printer set up which uses the user supplied job name for the output file. The job name was formatted like this "smbprn.00001020 Microsoft Word - Test.doc". Since then, RHEL have updated to samba 3.0.25. The job name supplied to cups is now a random string of characters like

GFS / CS / DS Questions about install and examples.
Hello I read about the technology and i found all amazing and great challenger, i like to test and install soon---, for this reason i have some question about this. <OT> RedHat support
As a parallel question to my thread about CentOS for commercial use, here's a question I've been wondering about. How many of you who have RHEL licenses and paid support licenses have ever needed actually to request support? And if you did was the support any bit more timely or accurate than community support for CentOS or other distros? -- Collins When I saw the Iraqi people

CentOS 4.5: Automounted USB disks eventually stop appearing on desktop
This is just a minor annoyance, but I wondered if anyone has any insights. When I first boot the system and log in to Gnome, and then plug in e.g. a USB stick or compact flash card, I get an icon for it on the desktop. I can right-click on this icon to "eject" the filesystem, etc. Eventually, though, for no obvious reason, this stops working and I no longer get an icon when I insert a
