Re: CentOS and SL, together? -- GPL, LGPL, kernel and user ...
From: Johnny Hughes <mailing-lists at hughesjr.com> > Nope ... I can't build that with GNU gcc and against GNU glibc and > release it ... sorry, no OpenAFS :( ??? Actually, you _can_. You just can't link it into the GPL kernel program. [ I'm not posting this to cross you. But someone correct me if I'm wrong. ] There is nothing in the GPL that prevents a GPL

New Book on "Linux Filesystems"
I've lurked on this list for a long time, and have learned many details on installing and using Ext3. Thanks! I'm finally posting to solicit feedback on my recently-published book on "Linux Filesystems". This book discusses the use, theory, and installation/integration of journaling and distributed filesystems on Linux, and also discusses what I call 'filesystem adapters'

how to get rhel3-ish distro run as domu with xen3
hello! i think i have an very common problem. i want to run a distro based on a 2.4 kernel (Scientific Linux 3/Centos 3/RHEL 3) in xen3 as domu. the dom0 is a 2.6 based and works fine. so i think the way to go is to "simply" use an 2.6 kernel. but now i see there are several things which don''t work for example module-init-tools are missing and i expect problems with the glibc.

openafs kernel module
We start to use centos 5 for our workstation at our site (University Innsbruck) and we use openafs to hold the home directories. There would be a big advantage to have the openafs kernel module (and the additional rpms) in the centos extras (or addons) repository with an automatic compile for the available kernels. If you need any help to do this i would be happy to participate in any way.

accessing AFS volume
Hi all! Just wondering whether anybody has any idea on configuration for accessing AFS volume using current version of Samba. The issue is how to get Samba pass correct kerberos ticket on opening the AFS volume. Having Samba to have root access over AFS is not an option as we need the AFS permission to still apply. Upon searching, the most recent info I can get is this thread from OpenAFS

Booting dom0: Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
Hello list, I tried to install Xen 3.1.0 on Scientific Linux (RHEL4), but this mission failed.. Hope you can help me by finding the reason for my problem. I downloaded the xen sources from http://bits.xensource.com/oss-xen/release/3.1.0/src.tgz/xen-3.1.0-src.tgz and compiled them by running "make" and "./install.sh". This seemed to work. After setting up grub like this,

From: Johnny Hughes <mailing-lists at hughesjr.com> > Sorry ... I was talking about the SRPM from SL ... it also build the > kernel modules ... Oh, right, sorry -- understand what you mean now. BTW, one of the worst assumptions I've seen is that because a distro or project ships something, its users believe it was done legally or with permission. I've seen many cases where

Re: CentOS and SL, together? -- attributing statements to me (that I didn't make)
There's nothing like asking someone to "give it a rest" while taking the opportunity to make fun of them. Lucky for you (and the list), I can laugh at myself, because I can seem comical at times. But in all seriousness, just remeber to hold us all to the same standard. And we are all responsible for what we say and how we say it, and I'll never claim to be better than the worst

shared storage: rw on one node and ro on second node
Hi list, I recently came up with the need for the storage, shared between two nodes; one would do all the r/w to it and the other would mount it r/o and serve it to the client boxen. I want to use ext3 in this setup, since i trust it the most. My question is: is this possible? How would the r/o node handle the metadata updates that the r/w node would be doing? If there is some fundamental

OpenSSH, OpenAFS, Heimdal Kerberos and MIT Kerberos
Rather then implementing kafs in MIT Kerberos, I would like to suggest an alternative which has advantages to all parties. The OpenSSH sshd needs to do two things: (1) sets a PAG in the kernel, (2) obtains an AFS token storing it in the kernel. It can use the Kerberos credentials either obtained via GSSAPI delegation, PAM or other kerberos login code in the sshd. The above two

Re: Which distributed file system for xen
Thanks John and Chris for your commentary. I''m constantly amazed at what is out there -- projects I didn''t know existed. I think Chris and I are looking for something similiar -- fault tolerant/high-availability over slow/fast links with ease of administration and (ideally) zero downtime. I''d like to virtualize my storage along with my Xen machines. After looking at

You didn't give me some packages, so now I'm giving you some! R, TexLive, LyX, Gnumeric, etc.
I want up-to-dateish versions of TexLive, R, gnumeric, emacs, but on a more-or-less stable base of Centos-5.2. I asked for packages in this, but got no answers. So now I've built them and will let you try them if you want. I used the source packages from Fedora 8 and 9. I wanted TexLive because many of us have jumped ship to Ubuntu Linux 8.04 and it does offer TexLive, and the compatability

Re: CentOS and SL, together? -- attributing statements to me (that I didn't make)
From: Dag Wieers > Bryan, stop generalising and dramatising. What dramatising? At some point, several people decide that anything they dislike was said by me. Several other people said far more negative comments about CIPE than myself. Those comments have now been attributed to me. I purposely avoided making it about whether or not CIPE should or shouldn't not be included, just why it

From: Collins Richey <crichey at gmail.com> > I roll my eyes when I hear how good and great and all-virtuous > RedHat is, On GPL. That's all. On GPL. OpenSSH and Kerberos / Active Directory authentication problems: Credentials cache permission incorrect / No Credentials Cache found
Greetings, I'm working on the infrastructure of a medium size client/server environment using an Active Directory running on Windows Server 2003 for central authentication of users on linux clients. Additionally OpenAFS is running using Kerberos authentication through Active Directory as well. Now I want to grant users remote access to their AFS data by logging in into a central OpenSSH

a possible heads up wrt CERN experiment breaking SL 5.6
This may or may not be of interest to CentOS developers; if it is not or if it is redundant of your efforts to keep atop of what's happening, you have my apologies. Whether it is joint or disjoint wrt to the upstream code is not known at this point, but I have submitted a request for elucidation if CERN security allows. kind regards/ldv ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Ewan
