Compiling Kernel Modules
Hi, Here'a a question - is it possible to compile a single module (distributed in the kernel source tree) for the current CentOS kernel (2.6.9-5.0.5) without recompiling the entire kernel and all other modules. I basically need reiserfs3 (nb. why is it disabled? it's a module, you use it, it doesn't wreck anything...) and I don't really want to change the rest of the kernel, and

[PATCH] klibc: reproducible builds
From: Maciej ?enczykowski <maze at google.com> This adds a new setting: KBUILD_REPRODUCIBLE If it is non-empty, ar and ranlib will be called in such a way that timestamps do not affect the build output. This allows one to get perfectly reproducible builds. Signed-off-by: Maciej ?enczykowski <maze at google.com> --- scripts/Kbuild.klibc | 14 +++++++++----- usr/klibc/Kbuild |

Query: Centos 4.2 availability
Hi, Not meaning to rush you folks (you're doing a great job). But I'm about to install/clone 4 computers with Centos 4. When can I expect 4.2 to be out (in DVD format preferably)? As in, is it worth waiting and saving myself the later hassle extra downloads? [I don't actually have 4.1 DVD's, just 4.0, so I pretty much have to download the DVD.ISO anyway] Cheers & Thanks,

Centos-announce censoring :-)
Hi! I have a quick question about the centos-announce mailing list, is there some guide as to what the subject lines of all the mails there are (ie. for regexps)? I want to filter everything that isn't related to CentOS 4 i386 out to /dev/null... Cheers and thanks, MaZe.

DHCP without network access
Hi, I've got a box with CentOS 4.2 x86_64 which had no DHCP access for a few hours, now I can't ping it (I'm pretty sure the box is still up). I expect the DHCP lease has timed out and the box has lost it's IP, I was expecting it to reacquire it once the DHCP came back up (configuration problem) - but no luck. Is this a known problem? Any solution/workaround? (for now or for

x86 uniprocessor 4GB memory (fwd)
If you have an AGP video card which you aren't actually using you can try selecting the minimum possible AGP apperture (window whatever) size (possibly even disable it?). This might help. Also removing the AGP card and using a junk 1-8MB svga card will also possibly work. In my experience the linear framebuffer of video cards is by far the greatest memory hog these days. Cheers, MaZe.

Printing Postscript - Very Weird Problem.
Hey folks, okay, here's the situation - I have a Centos 4.2 system with cups printing installed printing via postcript (with appropriate PPD file) to a HP LaserJet 1320N printer (via jetdirect socket 9100). Everything seems to work right - except for an unusual 'font'??? problem. Many letters seem to be just slightly garbled. At first I thought this was a mechanical problem at

Kernel 2.4 and Centos4
Hi, Has anyone used a 2.4 series kernel on RHEL4/Centos4? There's a patch (openmosix) which I would really like to make use of [seeing as I just got 10 diskless computers...] which is not ready (yet) for the 2.6 kernel series... Can I just drop in a 2.4.26 series kernel and continue to have a working system? Or is RHEL now totally dependent on 2.6 kernel features? Cheers, MaZe.

livecd vs nfsroot vs what?
Hi, I'm trying to deploy some non-linux OS via pxe and I was thinking to just launch CentOS in RAM and then run dd or qemu-img or something like this in order to complete the other OS install via template imaging. My first idea was to build a custom CentOS livecd and use that in combination with pxe kernel parameters, but perhaps there's a better way to do this. Ideas? Thanks, Lucian --

post install freezes
Hello, I'm doing an unattended CentOS 5.3 install in a virtual machine vmware. I'm redirecting output to a serial console because production boxes won't have monitors. I'm getting to the point of doing the post installation then the box freezes. The only command i have in %post is yum -y update. I'm not getting no output. Suggestions appreciated. In the commands section reboot

alias keeps changing (fwd)
I'd suggest looking around the ifcfg-eth* files (somewhere in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts I think) nad commenting out HWADDR= lines, if that works, then try reversing the HWADDR lines - this will reverse the numbers of the ethernet cards (ie making eth0 eth1 and eth1 eth0) but should result in a stable configuration till next hardware change. And you problem? IMHO, when the system

init.d scripts not starting at boot
I have just deployed a new CentOS 6.4 image on AWS, and I'm having issues with init.d scripts not starting up. I've verified the following; 1) They work on their own after boot 2) They're set to run at runlevel 3,4, and 5 via chkconfig 3) The system boots up in runlevel 3 (no GUI) 4) There are no lingering PID files around after boot 5) Permissions

Query: Filesystems
Hello, Just a few quick, but not very simple questions...: Do any Linux filesystems (besides XFS) support freezing? (ie. in conjuction with LVM snapshots this can allow a mounted filesystem to be frozen [freezing all processes writing to this filesystem] in a valid state (with possibly dangling unlinked files), the device can be snapshotted via LVM, and the original filesystem unfrozen - the
