an rpm howto question
I am in a precarious spot.... I run centos 4.0. I upgraded my mod_perl RPM to mod_perl 2.0.1. CGI.pm 3.10 (3.05 comes with centos 4.0) fixes some namespace issues with mod_perl vs mod_perl 2.0.1. I need to upgrade to it to 3.10. Yet that file belongs to the perl rpm that comes with centos. What do people generally do in this type of situation? Do I need to compile a new perl just to upgrade

rsync a raw device
Hi all - is there some magic flag i'm missing that will allow me to rsync a raw device? Not the dev entry, but the device itself? I have a filesystem (backuppc data store) that does not respond well to directory traversal due to an extremely high number of hard links (which generate lots of disk seeks), and probably would not work well with rsync anyway due to a large number of actual

2.5.7 vs 2.6.1 interoperability bug
Hi all - I've got two red hat linux 7.3 systems. On each i have the redhat-provided 2.5.7 in the standard location, and a locally built copy of 2.6.1 in /usr/local/pkg. I'm implementing a remote-backup-to-disk setup. blakey is the "client" (source of rsync), verve is the "server" (dest of rsync). When i take care to match rsync binary versions (2.5.7 on each

CVE-2007-4091
hi all, i haven't seen any discussion here of this issue, nor do i see any obviously related (open) bugs in bugzilla. It's not clear to me from the CVE how important this issue is or isn't, but i'm a bit concerned. http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2007-4091 http://nvd.nist.gov/nvd.cfm?cvename=CVE-2007-4091 thanks as always to wayne & the other contributors

quick and easy way to convert id3-tagged flac to flac-tagged flac?
So before i knew better, i encoded a lot of my CDs in flac and added id3 tags (they worked, so great!). I know i've seen mention of others doing this; anyone gone to the trouble to write a tag conversion tool? Shouldn't be too tough, but i'd rather not reinvent the wheel. danno -- dan pritts danno@umich.edu 734-929-9770

sendmail/RPM question
Hi all - I've got a regular problem that i've been fixing by hand for a long time but i'm hoping i can get some advice about the right way to solve it. I replace the default redhat/centos sendmail configuration files with my own set. I have always just done this by hand. One thing I do is completely whack submit.cf. when i update the system, RPM recreates this file. I've

rsync cygwin hang
Hello, I'm having problems with rsync hanging on Cygwin. I read some archives of the list about this, but if I understood it correctly this problem had been solved? Mine prevails though. I'm running rsync 2.6.2 at both ends, Cygwin's version on the Windows end and backports.org's version on the other, Debian Woody, end. The one on the Cygwin end is running as a daemon, --daemon

7110 questions
Hi all, (down to the wire here on EDU grant pricing :) i''m looking at buying a pair of 7110''s in the EDU grant sale. The price is sure right. I''d use them in a mirrored, cold-failover config. I''d primarily be using them to serve a vmware cluster; the current config is two standalone ESX servers with local storage, 450G of SAS RAID10 each. the 7110 price

xmms plugin bug report - macOS 10.3, darwinports
Hi all - I've just finished building flac in the "darwinports" environment on MacOS 10.3.9. The port maintainer (i've cc'd him) had disabled the xmms plugin build. I wanted that, so I changed the portfile and built locally, yada yada. I've run into three problems, only two of which I've seen reported in the list archives here. 1) configure doesn't properly

Mixing SATA & PATA Drives
I suspect it''s probably not a good idea but I was wondering if someone could clarify the details. I have 4 250G SATA(150) disks and 1 250G PATA(133) disk. Would it cause problems if I created a raidz1 pool across all 5 drives? I know the PATA drive is slower so would it slow the access across the whole pool or just when accessing that disk? Thanks for your input. - Chris

rsync and tunneling via ssh
Hi, I have setup a rsync server with a rsync running as a deamon, due to security rules I cannot open the rsync standard port (873) in the firewall. We have to tunnel rsync through ssh. On the client side, which is linux kernel 2.4 I have made the following script, but ssh -i /home/ifao/bin/traveltest -f -C -L 2211:cib.ifao.net:8730 cytric@localhost sleep 1000 rsync -auz --password-file=rsync.cib

aacraid monitoring tool?
I've got myself an Adaptec 2200 HW RAID card to play for couple of days. Tha card uses aacraid device driver. Seems to work nicely, however just wandering if there's a tool (prefferably CLI) for CentOS that can read out RAID configuration data, status of individual drives, maybe even manage (create/delete) RAID devices? Thanks for any and all pointers.

Iptables port forwarding help
Hello, I have a webcam that I wish to view from the internet. It is a wireless linksys model with an ip address of 192.168.1.15. I have it set on port 8081, 192.168.1.15:8081. I am using the IP Masquerade HowTo script. Here's the rule I added to my firewall script: EXTIF="ppp0" INTIF="eth1" EXTIP="`$IFCONFIG $EXTIF | grep inet | cut -d : -f 2 | cut -d \ -f

Bandwidth shaper suggestion
Hello everyone, I'm looking for a bandwidth shaper that can limit downloads from certain IPs on a LAN. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of something that's easy to set up and configure. Even better if there's already a package that's on the CentOS repositories (or if not, maybe an RPM). Thanks and best regards, Matt -- Stand before it and there is no beginning. Follow it and

VMWare disaster recovery?
I found this in the large and growing list of downloadable vmware appliances: http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/316. I haven't run it yet, but it claims to provide a way to mirror running windows boxes over iscsi to vmware disk images, then allows you to boot that image under vmware as a replacement for the server with little downtime. Has anyone attempted something like this
