StoryRunner docs/guidance
Hi all,
Are there any plans for better documentation for the new StoryRunner
feature? I tried to use it today (with Rails), and had a hard time
getting my head around whether I was doing it "right" and exactly what
things are appropriate to test at that level (this might be exacerbated
by the fact that I''ve never really used integration testing that much).

webrick server slow or does not connect
hi,
In login_controller.rb when I do the fallowing code it works fine
before_filter :authorize, :except => :login
but I want to do the fallowing when creating the user so the
authorization is not checked
before_filter :authorize, :except => :login, :except => :create_user
but when I do this webrick server appear to be slow or not connected and
take lot of time to load?

RSpec''ing model association callbacks
Hi all,
i''m learning rspec and i must admit i really love it.
But at the time i started learning it, i already
developed my models classes and their callbacks.
Now i''m trying to get a 100% coverage of my code but i
cannot reach it because i do not understand how to
spec my callbacks.
Look at this for example:

attachment_fu and story runner, any updates
I''m trying to write a story for a Rails app which involves using the
attachment_fu plugin to upload images.
After blunting my pick on this for a while, google found me this:
http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/134743#600831
So it seems that there''s a hole in Rails integration testing and
multipart form posting. David offered to incorporate a patch to story
runner at the end of the

Requires from other modules / requires with aliases
Hi everyone, I''ve been working on a module for bacula, and I''m having
a problem requiring resources I''ve defined in other modules. At the
moment, I have the following (simplified):
/etc/puppet/modules/bacula/manifests/init.pp:
class bacula {
...
define configure ( $gui="true", $db_password ) {
...
postgresql::create_db {

Transactional/Rollback problems
I''m having a rollback problem with rspec trunk. It doesn''t seem like
rollbacks are happening quite as often as they should be. It
appears as though the rollbacks are *NOT* occurring on the first
description block in a file, but are for the rest. Here is a set of
specs that are failing:
require File.dirname(__FILE__) + "/../spec_helper"

I''ve got an integration test that''s failing but i can''t work out why:
Here''s the action being tested - in case anyone recognises it, it''s
based on the Depot app in Agile Web Dev with Rails.

understanding virtual classes and extensions thereof
I am having some trouble creating a hierarchy of virtual classes
(akin to the class structure in the 'Matrix' package). I think they
arise from my not understanding the best way to specify virtual
subclasses of a virtual class. please see questions below code.
setClass("mom")
setClass("kid1", representation("mom", "VIRTUAL"))

MLE Estimation of Gamma Distribution Parameters for data with 'zeros'
Greetings, all
I am having difficulty getting the fitdistr() function to return without
an error on my data. Specifically, what I'm trying to do is get a
parameter estimation for fracture intensity data in a well / borehole.
Lower bound is 0 (no fractures in the selected data interval), and upper
bound is ~ 10 - 50, depending on what scale you are conducting the
analysis on.

Scenarios Plugin Pre-Announcement
This is sort of a pre-announcement for a Rails plugin my friend Adam
Williams and I are working on. We''re in the process of extracting it
from a project we are working on so that it can be generally useful to
the Rails community. We are calling it "Scenarios". It is a drop in
replacement for Rails fixtures:

Testing Models without fixtures
Hi,
I would like to test a sorting method that is in the user model, it''s
a class method called search.
What I would like to do is create 2 users and load the test database
with just those 2 users, so that I can call
User.search("john") and it would return those two users.
Not sure how to clear the test database and populate it just with
these 2 users for that specific

data not being saved
I am trying to save data entered in a form and nothing seems to be
saving. What do you I have to look at to ensure everything is set-up
correctly? I have looked in my database.yml file and all looks good and
the database that I am trying to use exist. Thanks,

What do you think of this controller spec?
Here''s a controller spec I wrote, it''s for a very simple RESTful
controller (well, aren''t all RESTful controllers simple? :)
I''ve created a couple spec helper methods to refactor some of the
common code...for example, require_login_and_correct_user creates two
specifications: one for when the user isn''t logged in, and one when
the user is logged in but

Creating a child simultaneously with parent via form
Hi there
I''ve got a user model and an address model; a user has_many addresses.
A user object can be created via an html form which also allows for an
initial address to be created.
I''ve got a controller method working to save both objects via the
form, but I suspect I can achieve this in a more rails-esque manner.
Here is my controller method:

Confidence Band for empirical distribution function
Hi,
I was trying to draw an empirical distribution function with uniform
confidence bands. So I tried to find a way to calculate values of the
Kolmogorov-Smirnov Distribution but failed.
I guess it must be hidden somewhere (since the ks-test is implemented),
but I was unable to find it.
Is there any way to do this?
Thanks

sharing story steps
Hi,
How can I have a common set of steps that all my stories share?
i.e. My stories often start out looking like this:
Given a user Joe
Given a user Jordan
then:
Given("a user $username") do |username|
@users ||= {}
@user_sessions ||= {}
@users[username] = create_user(:username => username)
@user_sessions[username] = login_as(@users[username])
end
I want to share that

When will 6.2 be released.
Let's go ahead and get this flame thread started now to save time.
The CentOS team sucks ... it took XXXX days to do 6.1 ... it is going to
take twice as long to get 6.2
My mom said CentOS blows.
kbsingh is ugly.
hughesjr is old and fat.
OK ... that should do.

how to debug using rspec stories
Hello. I just started to use rspec stories. I followed the following
tutorial:
http://www.tomtenthij.co.uk/2008/1/25/rspec-plain-text-story-runner-on-a-fresh-rails-app
So I implemented my story and some of the steps are:

traffic shaping and classes
I''m looking over this traffic shaping available in the tc* files.
I went through this when I did my own traffic shaping outside of
shorewall previously.
For the average (i.e. home, perhaps) user, I''ve never understood why we
use these more complicated shaping algorithms that define classes and
guaranteed minimums and maximums and so forth.
For most home, or other small use

R crashes with package SJava; was Memory leakage?
Dear all,
Maybe this has something to do with R crashing?
When my R version crashes, there is Rgui.exe still
running in the background (i.e. W2K's task manager
recognises it only as a process, which apparently
is using almost 100% of the CPU).
I can reproduce that by "using" the SJava package
(from Brian Ripley's homepage, as suggested on
http://www.omegahat.org/RSJava/).
