[OT] 3Ware 9.2.1.1 firmware for 9000 series released
Here are the version numbers I get after installing the 9.2.1.1 release:
Model 9500S-4LP
Firmware FE9X 2.08.00.003
Driver 2.26.03.019fw
BIOS BE9X 2.03.01.052
Boot Loader BL9X 2.02.00.001
A bit confusing. I thought I saw a map of code set releases to various version
numbers but I couldn't find it on 3Ware's site.

Ext3 and 3ware RAID5
I run a decent amount of 3ware hardware, all under centos-4. There seems
to be some sort of fundamental disagreement between ext3 and 3ware's
hardware RAID5 mode that trashes write performance. As a representative
example, one current setup is 2 9550SX-12 boards in hardware RAID5 mode
(256KB stripe size) with a software RAID0 stripe on top (also 256KB
chunks). bonnie++ results look

Has anyone had success getting on-board sound to work on a Tyan S2895?
My setup is as follows:
Motherboard: Tyan S2895
CPU: Two Opteron 275s
Memory: 4 GB
Disk: Three 250 GB SATA drives attached to a 3Ware 9500S-4LP RAID card
Video: Nvidia GeForce 7800
The only hardware that I have added to the motherboard is the 3Ware card
and the Nvidia card. The disks are configured as a RAID 5 array, and the
machine boots from this array. I installed CentOS 4.2 x86 on this

Too much memory cache being used while moving large file
System :
CentOS 4.2
2.6.9-22.0.1.ELsmp
System fully up-to-date.
3GB RAM
3ware 9000S card, with Raid5 array.
I think that's about all relevant info ...
Had file on disk (not array), attempted to mv file to array.
Went fine till 2.4GB was copied, then it slowed down to a meg every few
minutes.
Free memory was ~50MB (Typically is 1.5-2GB), and cache was 2.5GB.
Stopped the move, however cache

Best mkfs.ext2 performance options on RAID5 in CentOS 4.2
I can't seem to get the read and write performance better than
approximately 40MB/s on an ext2 file system. IMO, this is horrible
performance for a 6-drive, hardware RAID 5 array. Please have a look at
what I'm doing and let me know if anybody has any suggestions on how to
improve the performance...

centos 4.2 (32bit) app installed on (64 bit) box mising library
I have a centos 4.2 32bit app that when installed on centos 4.2 64 bit
box and try to run it I get "libxml2.so.2 not found".
however if I "rpm -qa | grep libxml2" it shows up just fine.
How can I get this app to run on the 64bit box (without recompiling yet).
The recompiling will come someday...
right now I just would like it to run.
Thanks

3ware 9650 issues
I've been having no end of issues with a 3ware 9650SE-24M8 in a server that's
coming on a year old. I've got 24 WDC WD5001ABYS drives (500GB) hooked to it,
running as a single RAID6 w/ a hot spare. These issues boil down to the card
periodically throwing errors like the following:
sd 1:0:0:0: WARNING: (0x06:0x002C): Command (0x8a) timed out, resetting card.

SuperMicro X7DBE with CentOS4?
I am planning to build a server based on the SuperMicro X7DBE+-O
motherboard. This server will have two dual-core Xeon processors and
a 3ware 9550SX raid card.
Has anyone built a server based on this motherboard? Are there any
issues with the smp/dual-core support in CentOS4 that might cause
problems?
I appreciate any input. I'm just looking to find out about any
possible problems before

3Ware 9500 vs 9550 vs CentOS 4.latest kernel
Is anyone having issues with these particular cards (especially the
newer SATAII variant) and the stock CentOS kernels? Are they well
supported enough such that a "yum update" suffices to keep them synced
up with patches without having to hand edit the kernel or build special
modules from 3Ware each time?
Cheers,

3ware disk failure -> hang
I've got an i386 server running centos 4.2 with 3 3ware controllers in it
-- an 8006-2 for the system disks and 2 7500-8s. On the 7500s, I'm
running an all software RAID50. This morning I came in to find the system
hung. Turns out a disk went overnight on one of the 7500s, and rather
than a graceful failover I got this:

Speaking of 3Ware/RAID/SATA/9550SX...
I just built up a server running CentOS 4.3, and trying to boot from a 3Ware
9550SX-16ML, 16 port card. This system has 9x500GB drives, AMD Opteron, Tyan
K8SD mobo and 1 GB of ram. I downloaded the latest (9.3.0.4) driver from
3Ware, and after a couple of botched attempts, I got CentOS installed. In my
two botched attempts, the problem was X hanging during the formatting of the
drives, so I

How to create a huge file system - 3-4TB?
We have a server with about 6x750Gb SATA drives setup on a hardware RAID
controller. We created hardware RAID 5 on these 6x750GB HDDs. The effective
size after RAID 5 implementation is 3.4TB. This server we want to use it as
a data backup server.
Here is the problem we are stuck with, when we use fdisk -l, we can see the
drive specs and its size as 3.4TB. But when we want to create two different

OT: RH 4/5 and 3Ware 9500 firmware upgrades
I've just noticed that 3Ware has a more current version of the firmware
for the 9500S than I have on several machines. All of mine are running:
3w-9xxx: scsi0: Firmware FE9X 3.04.00.005, BIOS BE9X 3.04.00.002, Ports: 8.
and the latest rev appears to be 3.08. I'm wondering if there is any
compelling reason to upgrade or just let these sleeping dogs lie. :)

Adding (belatedly) Chinese fonts
I have a couple of English language systems that are soon going to have
to be able to display Chinese web content. I searched the repositories
and wasn't sure exactly which packages ought to be installed to make
this work properly. The systems are CentOS 4 w/Gnome. I figured I'd
ask here before I just dive in and break things. 8-)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Running firefox on a remote host on centos-4
Back in the day (read: before the latest firefox update), I used to be
able to ssh to a remote box, run 'firefox -local', and have that box fire
up its own firefox session even if I was running firefox on the system
from I which I sshed. Those days seem to be gone. No matter what I try, if
I've got firefox running on my local desktop, the remote firefox command just

3ware RAID controller scripts
Hello list, I see through the archives that some people here use 3ware
RAID controllers with Centos. I have picked up two 9500S-4LP
controllers for future servers. I was hoping that if some people could
please share their 3ware monitoring scripts with the rest of the
group. What I am really hoping to do is have some setup where a cron
job runs scripts to test each of the drives connected to the
