Best way to add/update an installation
In an effort to prevent getting many minutes into an installation only
to have a CD read fail (I did verify the CD's first), I did a minimal
install. Can I use the minimal install to add the necessay packages for
a HTTP server and graphical interface?

GUI Server settings not present
I have installed the minimum and used yum and groupinstall to install
"System Tools"
"Web Server"
yet the GUI Server Settings does not contain the Web server or Samba
(Samba was installed with "yum install samba"); it just contains Services.
Have I missed something here?

Installing on Abit BE7-RAID
I have RH 8 running on a Abit BE7-RAID motherboard. My task is
installing Centos 4.1 with limited knowledge on installing with hardware
RAID. The arrays are still in place for the two pairs of drives.
HighPoint only shows drivers up through RH 9.
Is there anyone who can take me through the steps? Remove the existing
arrays? Will the drivers work with Centos 4.1? Since I used Windows to

Centos Gotcha: YUM Groupinstall
Folks
I have encountered a situation with YUM that isn't what I expected.
Let's suppose I want to install a group, call it G. My first
question would be -- is the group already installed. Realize all of
this is scripted.
So, I use
yum groupinfo
and I see the list of installed groups, and those not yet installed.
If group G is in the list of installed groups, one would think that

yum custom install
I am trying to learn some of the in's and out's of yum, and thanks to
the help of many on this forum, things are beginning to make more sense
(though I still have a lot more to learn). My initial Centos install
was the "minimum". From there I used yum grouplist and yum installgroup.
However, one of the members helped me with using yum to install
php-mysql and I just found

Switching HTTPD ports
I need to run Apache on a port other than 80, 81 or 8080. My other
servers are using 80 and 81 (RH 9: 80; Windows Apache: 81). If I set
the port in httpd.conf to anything other than 80, I get an error that a
socket cannot be created for the port.
No doubt it has something to do with security (did not have that problem
with Win Apache, but Windows is Windows). Any suggestions on where I

The role of /.autorelabel
I could not get vsftpd to start; kept getting the "vsftpd Dead Subsys
Locked" error. On doing a Google search, I came across a fix (lost the
site unfortunately) and as I recall, it has something to do with copying
a file and having the incorrect SElinux settings (I have SElinux disabled).
The fix was to do a fixfiles, relabel (commands that I have never used)
or a touch of

Adding Bind to a workstation build
I need a DNS server in a test environment, so I am adding Bind to my
notebook build.
I first did: yum install bind
rebooted
yum update
rebooted
Now I see named as a service I can start.
But when I go to /var/named to edit the files (btw, all I want to do
at this point is to fake out a FQDN expected by a piece of gear), none exist.
And I doubt that if I start named it would be properly

Are these steps for re-installing Gnome correct/safe?
My desktop environment has become a little chaotic, and, long story
short, I would like to uninstall KDE and Gnome, and then reinstall
Gnome. (I want to remove KDE for the time being because I just don't
think I want it taking up space on my hard drive).
The thing is, I don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. For
instance, I want to make sure I don't lose settings in

To the best of my knowledge, nobody''s working on that. The main
difficulty in enabling that is making sure that puppet doesn''t run ''yum
groupinstall'' (or ''yum groupupdate'') on every run. To avoid that,

yum groupinstall "MySQL Database"
Hi all,
I have a question related to yum groupinstall.
I just tried a:
yum groupinstall "MySQL Database"
I expected that I would end up with a MySQL Database server,
but it installed a bunch of .rpms *except* mysql-server. No
big deal, I'm just curious if it was intended this way or not,
that's all.
Thank you and,
Have a nice evening everyone,

CentOS 6 yum Groupinstall vs Manual install
Gentlemen,
I have a question regarding yum groupinstall vs just using yum install.
I have been reading tutorials online (for example how to run a Centos
LAMP). Most of the tutorials have examples to install httpd, mysql, etc
using yum install httpd....
The reason for this e-mail is that I noticed in yum grouplist that there
is an option to install Web Server, MySQL database server, etc.

Find installed yum groups?
Is there an 'after the fact' way to find what yum groups are
installed, including ones that were added with 'yum groupinstall'
instead of the initial anaconda install?
