why was LILO removed from centOS 4.2?
I can't choose LILO as boot loader anymore in the install process? And what is the
advantages in GRUP vs. LILO that are so great that LILO has been deleted all
together?
One big disadvantages when forced to use GRUB is that it is a hassle to make the
disks in a RAID1 bootable.

and RAID1 seems pretty useless when it is the

adduser ?
I installed CentOS 3.3 some time ago and the first thing I did after the install was
to run a little script that adds my user plus a few other things.
The script adds my user like this
USER="ulrik"
PASSWD="<mypasswd>"
/usr/sbin/adduser $USER -p $PASSWD
It seemed to work fine except I couldn't login? I searched Google for reasons why I
could only login via ssh as

GRUB Bootloader
I installed CentOS 4 Beta on an ATA disk to have a look at it, and on the same
computer I have a Windows installation on a SATA disk. In the CentOS installation
process it could see the operatingsystem on the SATA and everything looked good, it
said something like "Other... /dev/sda" (not quite sure, it looked right so I didn't
really take note of it).
Now when I want to boot the

Upgrade to new drives in raid, larger
Hi all,
As part of my raid experience, I have yet to have to do this, but was
wondering how you guys would attempt it.
I have 3 drives in a raid 1, with one as a hot spare.
They are 250gb with all space used by two raid devices, 1 with boot, the
other with LVMs filling them up.
Now, lets say down the road I want to put in 500gb drives and replace
them....yikes.
I was thinking of taking out the

Hot swap SATA?
Should it be possible to hot-swap SATA drives with Centos5? It doesn't
seem to work on my system. Removing an unmounted drive locked the
system up, and leaving one out at bootup makes the devices change names
and keeps grub from finding /boot on a scsi drive that is shifted up.

First Time Setting up RAID
Arch = x86_64
CentOS-6.4
We have a cold server with 32Gb RAM and 8 x 3TB SATA drives mounted in hotswap
cells. The intended purpose of this system is as an ERP application and DBMS
host. The ERP application will likely eventually have web access but at the
moment only dedicated client applications can connect to it.
I am researching how to best set this system up for use as a production host

Upgrading drives in raid 1
I think I have solved my issue and would like some input from anyone who has
done this for pitfalls, errors, or if I am just wrong.
Centos 5.x, software raid, 250gb drives.
2 drives in mirror, one spare. All same size.
2 devices in the mirror, one boot (about 100MB), one that fills the rest of
disk and contains LVM partitions.
I was thinking of taking out the spare and adding a 500gb drive.

Software RAID1 Failure Help
I am running software RAID1 on a somewhat critical server. Today I
noticed one drive is giving errors. Good thing I had RAID. I planned
on upgrading this server in next month or so. Just wandering if there
was an easy way to fix this to avoid rushing the upgrade? Having a
single drive is slowing down reads as well, I think.
Thanks.

software raid - better management advice needed
Hi,
I've used mdadm for years now to manage software raids.
The task of using fdisk to first create partitions on a spare drive
sitting on a shelf (raid 0 were my 1st of 2 drives failed) is kind of
bugging me now.
After using fdisk to create the same partition layout on the new drive
as is on the existing drive and then using mdadm to finish every thing
up is a little tedious.

Hot swap CPU

There _are_ systems with hot-swap CPUs, memory and/or, PCI[-X] slots.
They are _not_ commodity and pricey, and require OS-level support.
In fact, I believe Linux 2.6 has some support for

how to get the source for installed RPM (CUPS)
I would like to change a few things in CUPS, but I would prefer to use the source
for the version of CUPS that I already have installed using yum. Mostly because I'm
quite happy with the way it works except a few details.
Is there a way to get the source using yum or should I go to
http://www.cups.org/software.php and get it from there ?
The version I installed with yum is 1.1.22 and on

When .. isnt the same? (not a problem
I don?t understand why ".." isn?t working the same way for "ls" and "cd" when inside
a symbolic link. The reason I ask is that I made a link to a directory with some
scripts that saves output in "../output.txt" and I could not find the output until I
found that ".." isn?t the directory you see when you do a $pwd. I solved the problem
by making a

RAIDs and JBOD?
Hey Guys,
I have some questions?regarding?a new home server I am going to build
in the hopefully very near future (ASAP, I just need to finish
planning everything and this is the penultimate?hurdle), I will be
creating a software RAID...
Lets say I have three drives "knocking" around which are all 1TB SATA
II drives but each made by a different manufacturer. I am going to
guess that

Have my RMA... Now what??
I have a raidz2 pool with one disk that seems to be going bad, several errors are noted in iostat. I have an RMA for the drive, however - no I am wondering how I proceed. I need to send the drive in and then they will send me one back. If I had the drive on hand, I could do a zpool replace.
Do I do a zpool offline? zpool detach?
Once I get the drive back and put it in the same drive bay..

Yesterday i was copying a few dump files (backups) about 1GB in size from my centOS

message over and over again:

I wasn't able to login or anything, so I saw no other

SATA RAID card recommendation?
I need a SATA RAID PCI card that works well with CentOS and is fully
supported. Mandatory features:
- works with the drivers already in the kernel, no additional drivers
- can do RAID 0, 1 and 5
- hotswap
- allows to monitor the status of the array and of each individual drive
via a script (ideally run from cron)
- works with very large SATA drives
Nice to have features but not mandatory:
