Vintage Attrition Curves
Hi There - New to the list, so hopefully I don't mess this up too much ... I am hoping maybe some of you can help me. I have a problem I'm trying to solve regarding customer accounts, attrition and forecasting. Basically, here is what I want to do (not sure of the best way): 1. Track accounts by vintage (i.e., the month of the date of sale). 2. Forecast total accounts at a given time

Sarbanes-Oxley headaches
Hi there, With the new scrutinization by auditors on account policies and auditing, how can Samba be SOX compliant? Using 3.0.14a-sernet on Suse 9.1 - ldapsam Specifically, a couple of things seem to be lacking: 1) Logon/Logoff times are not being recorded The last logon time recorded in my ldap entries are pre-nt4 migration. 2) Do the Audit Policy values in user manager have any effect? Are

Problem with merge() (PR#1102)
I have encountered a problem with merge() that appears to be a bug. Here's an example to illustrate it. > tmp1 <- data.frame(a=letters[1:3],b=LETTERS[2:4],x=1:3) > tmpa <- expand.grid(a=letters[1:4],b=LETTERS[1:4]) > tmpm.1 <- merge(tmpa,tmp1) > tmpm.2 <- merge(tmp1,tmpa) Error in "names<-.default"(*tmp*, value = vnames) : names attribute must

InfoWeek Article on VOIP
Here's t link: http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=JUEFVG ENEA01YQSNDBCCKH0CJUMEKJVN?articleID=165702588 The bottom line is that they compare retail VOIP providers like Comcast Cable, Time-Warner Cable, AT&T, Vonage, Packet8 et al. Their methodology seems sound. Their conclusion is that retail VOIP services don't yet match the PSTN for reliability &

Splitting data into test and train (80:20) kepping attributes similar
Hi, I am trying to do some predictive modeling around attrition and want to split the dataset into test and train (80:20) and keep the ratio of attritees:non attrites same. In my dataset the attrition indicator is coded as 0(for non-attritees) and 1 (for attritees) and I want to keep the ratio of 0's to 1 similar. I apologize for this trivial question but this is my second week with R.

Using GEE with sample weights
Dear R community I am using the gee package to run logistics regression on paired cases from a panel sample. We are getting request from a reviewer to use sample weights to account for different level of attrition. After searching the documentation I am unable to find a way to incorporate sample weights into the gee formula. I found a way to incorporate precision weight but I understand that I

chroot-ing users coming in via SSH and/or SFTP?
A client wants me to set up a mechanism whereby his customers can drop files securely into directories on his FreeBSD server; he also wants them to be able to retrieve files if needed. The server is already running OpenSSH, and he himself is using Windows clients (TeraTerm and WinSCP) to access it, so the logical thing to do seems to be to have his clients send and receive files via SFTP or SCP.

Asterisk Viruses?
The Skype network is circulating a virus that has appeared there before: http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=198500135 . The virus sends a URL to other Skype users in the infected user's contacts, which the target Skype displays as clickable. Clicking downloads the virus. Asterisk supports features like these, in combination with certain clients (which aren't

Windows API opens up???
Any thoughts on articles like this one - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/02/21/microsoft_goes_open/. This mentions the Vista API, but I wonder about earlier API's. I also saw something the other day about source code for .Net being released as a "learning tool". Of course, all of this is in a bid to get Office XML approved as an ISO standard. They don't just give stuff away

Limiting incoming SIP calls & Original CallerID on transfer
I have 2 issues which I need to resolve on our production Asterisk server: We are currently using Polycom IP600 VOIP phones for our office which are capable of handling 2 calls per SIP registration. What we're finding is when staff are on the phone, Asterisk will pass them a second call which will show up on their display, and an audible beep is heard over the phone (regular call waiting). I

reshape panel data
I have a data set with observations on 549 cities spanning an 18 year period. However, some of cities did not report in one or more of the 18 years. I would like to implement the procedure suggested by Wooldridge section 17.1.3 in his "Econometric analysis of cross section and panel data" to correct for attrition. For example the table below indicates that the 3rd and the 7th cities in

several bugs (PR#918) lists and matrices
### I got bit again by the same bugs I wrote about a year ago. ### The bugs are related to matrices and arrays of lists. ### 1. There is a clear inconsistency in how R handles two ### functionally equivalent statements. ### array() is able to take a list and create a matrix. ### matrix() is unable to create that matrix. > vector("list", 2) [[1]] NULL [[2]] NULL >

Longitudinal Weights in PLM package
Hi all, I a semi-beginner with R and I am working with the plm package to examine a longitudinal dataset. Each individual in this dataset has a longitudinal weight for the probability that he or she remains in the sample. Unfortunately, I have not found an argument to use weights in the plm function? I tried ?weights=? like in standard lm or in nlme or lm4 but it does not work. I asked the

Is Gluster the wrong solution for us?
We are about to abandon GlusterFS as a solution for our object storage needs. I'm hoping to get some feedback to tell me whether we have missed something and are making the wrong decision. We're already a year into this project after evaluating a number of solutions. I'd like not to abandon GlusterFS if we just misunderstand how it works. Our use case is fairly straight forward.
