mkfs.ext3 on a 9TB volume
Hello, I have: CentOS4.1 x86_64 directly-attached Infortrend 9TB array QLogic HBA seen as sdb GPT label created in parted I want one single 9TB ext3 partition. I am experiencing crazy behavior from mke2fs / mkfs.ext3 (tried both). If I create partitions in parted up to approx 4,100,000 MB in parted, mkfs.ext3 works great. It lists the right number of blocks and creates a filesystem that fills

Broadcom NIC Binding under Centos 4.2
Hello all, I'm having unusual difficulty configuring teaming with Centos 4.2. The 2 NIC's are Broadcom. The HW is HP DL360 and there is no teaming driver for RHEL4 since it comes with package (says HP). Since there is no teaming driver from centos (as far as I know), I tried the Broadcom Driver, configured the team file, but the team just wont come up. A Virtual Interface should be up

[Fwd: [suse-amd64] OFF-TOPIC - *very* bad]
I saw this on the SuSE AMD64 list & decided to pass it along, since it seems like a sneaky problem. Later posts confirm it is *NOT* AMD64-specific, nor SuSE 9.3 specific .... -- William A. Firefox, Flash and Java on CentOS 4.1 x86-64
First of all, I just want to say *again* how happy I am with CentOS. Across our boxes and our clients boxes, we're running it on more than 20 machines at the moment and it's by far the most painless OS to administer in detail that I've ever used. (Of course, I'm an old Slak hat, but ...) Thanks so much to the community and the maintainers. We've recently run into a problem

Recommendation On Ping And Alert Tool
A bit off topic, but I keep looking for an answer to this question and coming up with nothing... so I thought I would go to the gurus. :-) Can anyone recommend a good package for pinging other devices and sending an email/alert when they go down? I'm aware of all kinds of more complex things with GUIs and a zillion other bells and whistles we aren't looking for, but we just want a simple

[OT] Services for Unix being built into Win2K3-R2
I found this article about Microsoft SFU being built into the new Windows 2003 Server R2 very interesting. http://news.com.com/Microsoft+makes+Unix+changes/2100-1016_3-5845790.html?tag=cd.top What does this signify? Is Windows ready to really co-exist with Unix / Linux ... or are they going to try and provide similar functionality because they recognize it is better technology moving forward?

Shutdown script not being run
I've got an odd problem. My server will not shutdown normally because the AoE driver is not being shut down properly. While investigating the problem, I found that the aoe script is apparently not being called for shutdown. I have been able to duplicate this with a brand new test script. My test script is just a simple file that echos back the start or stop command: #!/bin/bash #

[OT] DirectDial.com ....
.... does anyone onlist have any 1st-hand experience (good or bad) w/ DirectDial.com for procuring computer components ? Thanks in advance :-). I am interested in them as a potential source for parts to build an Opteron box running Linux, probably CentOS, to bring this slightly on topic .... -- William A. Can't get JRE to install so that FireFox sees it
Hot on the heels of the success of getting sound to work with FireFox, I am on to getting Java applets to run. When I go to a page with a Java applet, I get the little Rubik's cube- like icon that says I can click to download. So I do, but FireFox says it can't find it, so I have to install manually. I click on Manual install and I'm taken to a page that allows me to download the RPM

Correlation with LNAELV ....
.... I am new to this list (got referred here from the fedora list, COLD ....) and have a few questions. I poked around CentOS.org & couldn't figure these out, so here goes: 1. What is the correspondence, if any, betwixt RHEL, err, I mean LNAELV version #'s and CentOS version #'s ? 2. Does CentOS plan to branch permanently away from LNAELV distribution, or periodically

Multi-button mice and Linux?
Does anyone here use a multi-button (as in more than 2) mouse with Linux? How well supported are they? I've had to get one recently for work. I was diagnosed with CTS and I now wear braces and use a wireless Intellimouse. Works great at work with Windows, but I'm unsure how much, if any support there is for Linux. Anyone have experience with this? Preston

CentOS 4 and Intel P4 without Hyper-Threading vs. Intel P4 with Hyper-Threading
Hello Does anyone know of any possible concerns in moving a "production" CentOS 4 install from one machine to another where the "only" difference is that the processor changes from a 1.8 Intel P4 "without" Hyper-Threading to a 3.0 Intel P4 "with" Hyper-Threading ? I am guessing not, yet I "have to" ask. Regards, - rh

[PATCH 3/10] I386 mcheck p4 grotesque and needless warning fix.patch
No, just no. You do not use goto to skip a code block. You do not return an obvious variable from a singly-inlined function and give the function a return value. You don't put unexplained comments about kmalloc in code which doesn't do dynamic allocation. And you don't leave stray warnings around for no good reason. Also, when possible, it is better to use block scoped variables
