Safe to use gstreamer repository for RH or Fedora?
I'd like to install "Gstreamer" so that I can get MP3 support in Rhythmbox. At least, I'm led to believe MP3 support comes with installing Gstreamer from Rhythmbox's FAQ. But when I get to the Gstreamer download page: http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/download/ ... it says: "Do not compile from source yourself unless you are certain you have to or want to" Okay,

Ogg in my car
I hope this hasn't already been mentioned on the list or I'll kind of look stupid... The Ogg Developers may already be aware of this, but I thought this would be news for most of the people who subscribe to this list. I saw this on NewsForge where they referenced an article from MP3Newswire.net The article is about Kenwood announcing a digital music system for cars that supports Ogg

Looking for some recommendations for applications on CentOS (MP3, FTP)
Last time I asked for some recommendations on this list, I was told about some great software that I hadn't been able to find myself, so I'd like to ask again. I've been having a hard time finding software that satisfies in the following 2 areas: 1. MP3 player and play list manager. Something that can ideally generate smart playlists based on MP3 tags. (I've tried XMMS, Amarok,

Just can't get sound working in Firefox
I have been all up and down my Firefox options, and all up and down whatever sound card configurations I could find in Gnome. And I just can't get sound to work. Whether it's a Flash animation, a Quicktime movie, or anything, they all run, but no sound. All other applications that run sound, like Xine or XMMS, work fine (although mysteriously XMMS every now and again loses it's

CentOS 5 sound problems on ICH5
Hi I have installed CentOS 5 on my computer which has an Intel ICH5 sound chip. The card appears as it should, and I can adjust the volume just fine. However, when I try to play a sound file(.ogg for instance), rhythmbox plays through the file, but no sound is heard. I've tried as root, and I've tried doing cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp, and it's all quiet. Output from lspci:

chan_alsa - no sound / strange sound - 1.4.9
Hi some problem with chan_alsa. Depending on the configuration I don't get any sound output (output_device not set in alsa.conf - same as output_device=default) or very strange output (output_device=hw:0,0) when dialing into something like exten => 10,1,Answer exten => 10,n,Playback(soundfile) exten => 10,n,Hangup Other alsa applictions do work without problems and for example this

Pidgin and (lack of) sound on CentOS 4.6
When I start pidgin from the Applications -> Internet -> Internet Messenger menu, my sound device stops working. I think this has something to do with the Gnome applet. I appear to end up with two (sometimes more) copies of the "gaim" process running -- such that if I use the right-button menu on the Gnome applet to quit pidgin, a login dialog is stil left behind and sometimes

Audacity in wine does not find "default" sound system
When I run Audacity for Windows (the 1.13 beta) under wine, the "default" sound system does not work. I have to select "MIME" and "Wine Sound Mapper." Wine Sound Mapper does work, but isn't wine supposed to use the "default" sound system as primary, and if that has changed, how come winecfg can't find the "wine sound mapper" sound system?

Sound Stutters and Sputters then dies
Hey Y'all, Recently my sound has been misbehaving. The issue exists when I play sound using Rhythmbox, Totem Movie Player, or even Youtube video in Firefox or Chrome. The sound stutters and drops out. Sounds very rough. On Youtube the sound will eventually just die and can not be restarted until the browser is shut down and restarted. I've had issues related to Repo Forge

No sound with alsa and Nvidia HDMI
Hi, I cannot get wine to recognize my audio device (Nvidia GT210 w/HDMI). No other sound card is enabled. The right device for sound is hw:0,3. Alsa's speakertest works fine. Pulseaudio is completely removed from my system. Also Wine's pulse package is removed even though the trace still has some references to pulseaudio. Winecfg displays only MIDI devices under ALSA. No Sound in Spotify with WINE
Apologies if you have also seen this post on the Ubuntu Wine forum, as I have cross posted it there. I hope this is not bad form, but I wished to have the best chance of getting some assistance as possible. Spotify has suddenly stopped working for me. It used to work fine about a month ago. The only recent change is that I have upgraded Ubuntu to 10.10 (previously I had 10.04) I don't think

librhythmbox-itms-detection-plugin.so
I'm looking at ways to potentially reduce tracking via browser fingerprints. https://panopticlick.eff.org/ When I go to that url in CentOS FireFox - my browser is very distinct. For me I believe this is largely caused by gstreamer. I run a modern gstreamer, not the CentOS packages gstreamer. My modern gstreamer also includes a lot of the patent-encumbered codecs, and on that eff project
