64 bit hardware and filesystem size limit
We recently bought a 32-bit Xeon system with a 12-port 3Ware RAID card
and a dozen 500GB drives. We wanted to create 4TB drive arrays;
however, we soon discovered that there is about a 2.2TB drive array size
limit on 32-bit hardware. Does that sound correct?
Would replacing the 32-bit mobo/cpu with a 64-bit mobo/cpu allow us to
use drive arrays larger than 2.2TB?
Thanks.

More info on 3Ware 9550SX from the field (in case anyone else is interested)
From a buddy of mine that has spent a little time with the new cards.
This was in response to my email asking about his impressions of them:
It just came out in mid-September. There are a couple reasons I'm
not thrilled with it:
1) no 8-port multilane version (only 12)
2) the 8-port non-multilane version is a kludge, connector-wise (a row
of 3 double-stacked connectors along the

dell sc420 connect to LCD 32" at 1366x768
Hi,
I am attempting to connect my dell SC420 to a 32" LCD at 1366x768.
I have attached my currect config file and currect X start log.
How do I massage the xorf file to run at the native resolution of the LCD?
It currently runs but is in a virtual mode. The screen scrolls.
Any help is appreciated. I am using Centos 4.1.

SCSI cards
Hi
I am trying to find a good PCI 64 SSI 320 raid controller to
use with Centos & 4 10k drives as raid 1 & 0 to get the best
I/O speed, any clues as to what people have found to be the best.
Thanks

Upgrading Drive, Best Practice?
Hi,
This might sound like a n00b question, but I've honestly never done this
with a Linux machine... (it is running Centos3)
We have a 1U mail server with two 36GB SCSI drives in a hardware mirror
config. There's no more room for any other drives in the case. It's
filling up, so we now have two 74GB drives ready to take their place.
Possible solutions that I've come up

2.6.9-42.ELsmp kernel and 3ware 9550 tools
I have the latest kernel with the drivers for my 3ware 9550SX built in.
Where
can I find the tools and monitoring apps for this card? Are there rpms
hiding
somewhere, or do I need to build it from source?

3ware RAID controller scripts
Hello list, I see through the archives that some people here use 3ware
RAID controllers with Centos. I have picked up two 9500S-4LP
controllers for future servers. I was hoping that if some people could
please share their 3ware monitoring scripts with the rest of the
group. What I am really hoping to do is have some setup where a cron
job runs scripts to test each of the drives connected to the

Feeling a little guilty...
This is the first time I have tried Centros and I must say that I am a
very happy camper. But maybe my needs/goals are simple: I need HTTP
and FTP servers that support Apache, PHP and Interbase (yes, that
"funny" DB that runs and runs).
RH 9 was like that and so was FC 3, BUT FC 4 was something else...could
not even get it to install (like others). And this forum has been VERY

YUM and RPM often freezes my computer
Sometimes when I attempt a YUM install, it will get to the point where
it is looking for packages to install, and my hard drive will make a lot
of noise, but there is no progress. My mouse cursor freezes, and I can
not switch between programs or kill the process. Eventually I have to
reset the computer in order to get control back.
The same thing will also happen when I install an RPM. When

file system defragmentation
I've read in many places that file systems on Linux do not suffer the
same fragmentation problems of Windows systems. No one has provided a
clear explanation as to why fragmentation is not an issue for file
systems such as ext2/3, reiserfs, xfs, etc. Just curious.

[OT] Services for Unix being built into Win2K3-R2
I found this article about Microsoft SFU being built into the new
Windows 2003 Server R2 very interesting.
http://news.com.com/Microsoft+makes+Unix+changes/2100-1016_3-5845790.html?tag=cd.top
What does this signify?
Is Windows ready to really co-exist with Unix / Linux ... or are they
going to try and provide similar functionality because they recognize it
is better technology moving forward?

OT: cheap DVD-RAM media?
A bit off-topic. Not a question on how to get it working, but rather question
about an practical issue after you get it to work ;-)
I got a DVD burner that supports DVD-RAM (in addition to standard DVD+R/-R). I
really liked "use it just like hard disk" properties of DVD-RAM, and according
to some sources I found, the media itself is more resistant to ageing than
standard DVD+R/-R.

Rescan harddisk size without rebooting
Hi list,
I have a SAN attached to a CentOS 4.2 server. I have expanded the size
of the virtual disk within the SAN (by adding a new HD to the disk pool)
and need CentOS to see the new size (CentOS see it as /dev/sdb). I'm
using LVM. Do you know a method for the Volume Group to see that one of
its harddisk is now bigger, without rebooting (it's not a problem with a
reboot but since

Installing on Abit BE7-RAID
I have RH 8 running on a Abit BE7-RAID motherboard. My task is
installing Centos 4.1 with limited knowledge on installing with hardware
RAID. The arrays are still in place for the two pairs of drives.
HighPoint only shows drivers up through RH 9.
Is there anyone who can take me through the steps? Remove the existing
arrays? Will the drivers work with Centos 4.1? Since I used Windows to

New to the list and one quick question
Hi all,
Let me start off with a little back ground. I am running right now RH9
fully updated on a Dell PowerEdge 1600SC with 512megs of Ram, 18G SCSI
HD. I run this at home so this is no critical server, unless you ask my
girls when I have it down, I have been debating on upgrading to Fedora
until I started looking at CentOS. I have download the ISO and burned
them with X-CD-Roast. Here

Making Driver Disks
List,
I have attempted to make my own megaraid driver disk for a Dell
PowerEdge 2300. The procedure I'm using is detailed at the end of this
message. In short, I followed samples that I collected after Googling
around. The problem I face is that the CentOS 4 installer can't seem to
mount the driver disk after I have created it. It gives no information
other than, "Cannot

Moving the Home dir to new server
I have a new Centos installation that has an empty /home dir and there
are no users...just root. I want to move the home directory from
another server to the new one. At this time the old /home directory has
been tarred with "-prf". That will keep permissions which could be a
problem.
Is there a simple way to move the /home directory? And the non-system
users in the password

Mailing List Etiquette
OK guys and gals ... can we please stop all the fighting?
When technical questions are asked, they should be answered. I lot of
people on this list have something that a lot of newbies need ...
experience.
So answering a question with "RTFM" or "JFGI" is not going to impart any
