Calling functions of R from Perl?
Hi, I've already asked this question, but unfortunately I've combined it with another question. So it was ignored in almost all cases. Thanks to those who have already given some hints. Here again: I don't want to use R interactively (issue commands after the prompt > ..), but use some functionality of R from inside a Perl script. Can I use methods of R from a Perl script: Is

direct-inward-dialing (DID)
I know that Asterisk supports DID, but does anyone have documentation on how to write the configuration for it? I'll be trying to setup a hybrid system where some incoming numbers will be DID enabled and others won't, so I'll need to be able to sort between the two, i.e. directly connect the DID dialed numbers and route the others to an autoattendant for extension dialing.

Dealing with brute force attacks
Over the weekend one of our servers at a remote location was hammered by an IP originating in mainland China. This attack was only noteworthy in that it attempted to connect to our pop3 service. We have long had an IP throttle on ssh connections to discourage this sort of thing. But I had not considered the possibility that other services were equally at risk. Researching this on the web does

Application doesn't run without a CD
Hello, I have a situation here. I use a French dictionary "Le Petit Robert 2003" on a daily basis for my studies and it's probably the only thing left that ties me to Microsoft Windows. The problem when running it with Wine is that I am asked for a CD to be inserted. This application just won't run without it. The thing is that it shouldn't require a CD since I have made a

Appreciate any help - I am working through Agile web development (4.0) and am stuck on the deployment using phusion passenger. I get this: "Forbidden You don''t have permission to access / on this server." when I put depot.yourhost.com in the browser. I have been through various web searches and for file permissions and suggestions to change the <Files> container.

Fix for augPred/gsummary problem (nlme library)
Dear R-users, I am a newbie to this site and a relative new-comer to S/R, so please tread lightly, for you tread... There have been several posting relating to problems with augPred() from the nlme library. Here is a "fix" for one of these problems which may lie at the root of others. In my case the problem with augPred() lay in gsummary(), which augPred() uses, causing it to fail.

memory leak in puppetd?
I have a cluster of 20 or so machines. On many of the nodes, the puppetd process take up a ton of resident memory (> 400MB RES in top, > 500GB VIRT in top) after running for a while (> 1 week). The only thread I found on this was titled "memory leak?" and last updated on 06-Dec-2007. The question on that tread was whether or not the memory was buffered memory. I

What kind of error is 13?
I never figured out how I should tread error 13 from rsync, "Problem with diagnostics". My question is, is this a transient or permanent error? Or how seriously did something go wrong when rsync returns 13? I don't get much smarter reading the rsync source either. For reference this is for Lsyncd, which watches files with inotify and uses rsync to transmit changes to a slave. It

R thread safe
Dear R-dev, I would like to accelerate my R computation by using parallel OpenMP compilers (e.g from Pathscale) on a 2-processor AMD server and I would like to know whether R is a tread safe library. The main kernel of the OpenMP parallelization is a C SEXP function that performs the computational routine in parallel with: ******************* SEXP example(SEXP list, SEXP expr, SEXP rho) {

difference in behavior between batch and source
Hi : I am using R 2.20 on windows XP and I have a REALLY long read.table statement because the col.names argument has 440 character strings in it. ( I use python to write R code ). When I run the read.table statement inside an R program ( the R program only consists of the read.table statement ) using the source command in an interactive R session, everything works fine. But, if I take the same
