Newbie question on soft phones with SIP and *
I am new to the Telephony world and am trying to get a basic idea of how things work. Can I use Asterisk to connect two soft phones on a LAN to communicate with one another without any additional hardware (besides the sound-card)? If this is possible, I seem to be doing something wrong. I have installed a version of X-Lite and can't seem to get it to ring on my Win PC. Any pointers to docs

NewbieQ: SOHO setup with x100p
After scouring the list archive and not finding the answer I decided to post to the list. I'm sure the answer is glaringly obvious but please bear with me. Using Asterisk, I'm tasked with setting up a SOHO with 5 analogue (FXS?) lines and a number of soft-phones for internal extensions. I'm confused by the telephony hardware needed for this exercise - 1) I need the equivalent of two

Good day all I'm in South-Africa,currently we are using openline4 cards for our pbx systems. Now we first need approval on the cards form icasa(a government standards) before we can use the card. The market here is very big for a system like asterisk. The only problem is to get a card approved(for a small company like us) its just about impossible. Now what I'm looking for is a company that

Newbie questions from South Africa: Initial setup
Hi All, I have been researching Asterisk for a few days now and have read hundreds of web pages and other documents. While some things are getting clearer, others are not. I have managed to install Asterisk 1.0.1 on Debian testing (simple as 'apt-get install asterisk'). I understand FXS/FXO, codecs available, feature and functionality available etc. I have found several "Getting

The freenum.org project is an ENUM parallel tree, which has as an eventual goal the distribution of ENUM numbering in nations or areas which due to political or other issues are not able to get secure, inexpensive, or functional ENUM capabilities. bandwith issues, ISP hosting services, etc
I am looking into supporting around 20 SIP clients (ATAs, IP softphones, etc) distributed in around 10 different end points (in South America). For the most part they all have narrow band connections 64kpbs, 128 at most and I?d like to use g729 all around (don?t have too many alternatives) To start with, I will have one * with no gateway to the PSTN and eventually a few * boxes with termination

Winbind help
Hi. I'm not subscribed to the list, so if you can help, please e-mail me or CC me in the response. I've been using Samba for quite a while, and just set up a 2.2.2 server with winbind support. Console logins and SMB access work fine, wbinfo -t reports "Secret is good", and wbinfo -r domain+ntuser shows the right group number. In fact, the UID/GIDs are translated properly when

Hardware IAX phone (please read and reply!)
Hello all! I've talked recently to the head of R&D dept. of Telkom Telos (www.telos.com.pl) - a big Polish company specialised in making phones. I gave them the idea of creating a cheap (cost-effective) hardware IP phone. The phone we discussed would include hardware support for IAX (though probably SIP/sth. else would be required too if it were to hit the market.. what do you

I was thinking of giving Asterisk a couple of PBX lines interfaced through cards, and then place outgoing calls through SIP/H323 and a DSL connection. analog extension lines <--> analog pbx <-->asterisk <--> SIP --> termination I do not need incoming calls to the lines. My question is this : if I
