Samba-3 HOWTO and ref. guide - need clarification please - printing chapter
Could someone who is familiar with the book "Samba-3 HOWTO and reference guide and who is also familiar with printer setup please give me some advice... I am summarising the procedure for setting up a printer for automatic driver download which is described in chapter 17. There are a couple of processes mentioned that look very similar and I am wondering if both steps are required for

Infrasoft MX very slow loading from Samba share
We are experiencing long delays when loading MX files stored on our samba fileserver. We are running version 2.2.7a of Samba on Solaris 8 servers. Using MX version 2.5 and higher on windows 2000 and XP workstations When the files are stored locally they load in a few seconds, whilst taking more than a minute to run from the Samba server. Our current workaround is to store the files locally,

AutoCAD file names UPPER CASE on samba
Hi folks, we are experiencing a problem when AutoCAD 2000+ drawing files are saved on a Samba (2.0.8) file share. Regardless of what the file is 'saved as', the name is always converted to all capitals. e.g. Drawing1 becomes DRAWING1 Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem. Seems strange that it is only AutoCAD files, but I think it is Samba related, not AutoCAD,

Loading Moss (MX) files takes ages... anyone?
Hi, I have some users who are having big delays (up to 30 mins) when trying to load MX (infrasoft) files off the Samba Server. Don't have any problems with similarly sized, non MX files off same server. Just wondering if anyone has any experience of this, even if just to say "we have no problems with these files" The clients are Win NT and 2000 boxes. Server is Solaris 8 with

RE: A Suggestion
Trevor, you are right; this is a great forum for help, but the interface definitely leaves some things to be desired. In my very humble opinion, I would love it if every message that appeared on this list was also posted to the Samba forum on Tek-Tips; www.tek-tips.com (search for forum called andrew tridgell: samba) which has a beautiful interface. Tek-Tips makes it so easy to follow a

Small Bug with username map (2.2.5)
Hi, there appears to be a problem with a minor part of username map file interpretation. When I put an exclamation mark before a line in the file, that is supposed to stop any further mapping if a match has already been made. That's what I understand to be the case. This is not happening for me. When I connect from a Win2k machine as Administrator, the log file records the mapping from

printing - Win95 & Win98 not working - NT,2000, XP are ok.
Hi folks - I am having printing problems with our older machines. Printing is working okay for our Windows NT, 2000 and XP clients. However, with windows 95 & 98, the print job gets put into the Samba spool directory (path = /var/spool/lp/tmp/samba) but doesn't make it to the printer. The print files stay there in the directory - don't get removed. Samba version is 2.2.7a, on

Fw: Win95 & Win98 - NOT WORKING - NT,2000, XP are ok (reposted)
Hi Peter, i had a long, frunstrating web surfing yesterday night, searching for something that could apply to your case. I didn't find much at all, sorry. The only thing perhaps interesting to you could be this: http://us2.samba.org/samba/ftp/docs/htmldocs/printer_driver2.html This doc contains a section about migrating from 2.0.x to 2.2.x I think the problem lyes in the new way samba

Re: C'mon guys. Get some virus protection
These virus messages are making the digest form of the mailing list very difficult to read. approx. what size should samba compile to?
Hi, I just downloaded samba 3.0 and configured, make, make installed it It turned out to take up about 2 Gb of disk space. Is this a normal size for the installation? Just checking. matter, but it is the reason that I don't use swat, and I have read comments from several other people suggesting the same thing - don't use swat if you have a carefully organised conf file. In your opinion, is swat mainly a tool for optimising the conf file? What I would like it to be is a tool for organising/managing conf parameters, for easily viewing what value each parameter is set to

Tek-Tips Samba Forum
I was really happy to see that someone has created a forum for Samba at the Tek-Tips web site. I use the Tek-Tips site for other subjects, especially Visual Basic and Unix and find it absolutely brilliant for getting smart advice quickly. The Tek-Tips site is very well maintained, and I would like to see the Samba forum become as popular as some of the other subjects. This mailing list is very

Wanted - Samba Gurus to help
Hi, there are a few questions posted on the new Samba forum on Tek-Tips web site http://www.tek-tips.com/threadminder.cfm?SPID=865&CFID=34009252&CFTOKEN=12959894 which I am sure would be easily answered by some of the gurus on this list. You may be asking - "Why don't they just post the questions on this list?" Certainly, they could, but having used the Tek-Tips forum for

Is Samba 2.2.4 stable & error free
Hi, I am planning on upgrading our Samba servers to a more current version (presently we have 2.0.6) Just wondering if 2.2.4 is the best version to implement, or if an earlier version would be more stable, e.g. 2.2.3a I ask this question because I've seen a few messages on the mailing lists suggesting errors in 2.2.4, but don't know if these are real errors or just people with a bad

SOLVED: (maybe) Re:Windows 95/98 will not connect to Samba 2.2.5
Ok, I think I fixed the problem, but I'm still a bit puzzled. You see, a lot of our users are mapped to the user 'nobody' When I checked the log file, I noticed that it was having a problem because 'nobody' has a null password. So, putting the parameter 'null passwords = yes' into the conf file fixed the problem. What I don't understand is that it connected fine

suggestion: small amendment to Printing How-to
Hi, I have a very small suggested amendment to Chapter 6 of the "Samba How-To Collection" document. This is the chapter about printing. The change I would like to see may seem trivial, but as a relative Samba Newbie, I took a while to figure out this section of the documentation... "Once you have created the required [print$] service and associated subdirectories, simply log

Windows changes file ownership & ACL's - any solution?
We have a problem with file security settings changing when a file is edited by someone who is not the owner. When the edited file is saved, ownership is transferred to the person who edited the file. Also, access control settings for the file are reset to a default setting. This is a real problem, since in some cases it means that the original owner of the file no longer has permission to edit

Possible Bug?? (was: Win95 & Win98 - NOT WORKING - NT ,2000, XP are ok)
Thanks for the suggestion Andrew, I was hopeful, but removing the writeable made no difference. Still prints from NT, 2000, XP but not from Win95, 98. Any other ideas? -peter.
