Using openssh 3.1p1 on Solaris with tcp wrappers 7.6
Dear Open SSH and TCP Wrappers Colleagues,
We are trying to use open ssh 3.1p1 on SPARC platforms
under Solaris 2.8 using gcc 2.95.2, in conjunction with
tcp wrappers 7.6 (IPv6 version). The wrapping of open ssh
is not too well documented but I think we have figured
most of this out (hearty thanks to Wietse Venema, Jim
Mintha & Niels Provos for their helpful email exchanges) --

ANNOUNCE: portable openssh-2.1.0
[The is an announcement to the developers list only, please give
the new version a try overnight and I will announce it to the wider
community tomorrow.]
This is to announce the release of openssh-2.1.0, the first stable
release of portable OpenSSH to incorporate support for the SSH2
protocol.
The SSH2 protocol offers a number of advantages over the SSH1 protocol
including standards compliance

known_hosts, IP, and port revisited
I dug through the list archives to see if this had come up before, and I
see that a bug <http://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=393> was
submitted and subsequently closed (basically rejected) in 2002.
The basic issue, for those of you who don't feel like following the bug
URL, is that when one has ssh servers behind a NAT, each of which responds
to a different port on the NAT IP,

ssh-add: local private keys added to forwarded agents
Hi,
This may or may not cause concern for some people (considering a lot of
people store all of their keys on a single client system).
Snippet from draft-ietf-secsh-agent-00.txt:
2. Security Considerations
This protocol is designed only to run as a channel of the SSH
protocol.
The goal of this extension is to ensure that the users private keys
never leave the machine they are

Duplicate value used in disconnect reason definitons
I could not find anything in the mailing list archive or bug tracker.
In ssh2.h, the value (4) is re-used
148 #define SSH2_DISCONNECT_KEY_EXCHANGE_FAILED 3
149 #define SSH2_DISCONNECT_HOST_AUTHENTICATION_FAILED 4
150 #define SSH2_DISCONNECT_RESERVED 4
151 #define SSH2_DISCONNECT_MAC_ERROR 5
Is this intentional?

OpenSSH and keystroke timings
Old news, but ... http://lwn.net/Articles/298833/
I first posted about this back in 2001 and it's still not resolved:

1) high latency networks are a reality that will never go away. In fact they
will only become more prevalent since distributed networks continue to grow
broader but (surprise) the speed of light remains a constant.

status of openssh-2
Hi,
My name is Stefan Mangard and I plan to implement an extension to ssh as a
final project in a cryptography class.
Since I want to use an open source of ssh, I decided to use
the openssh implementation.
I am currently working with openssh-1.2.3, but I'd also like to implement
my extension for protocol 2, I wanted to ask you how far the development
of the implementation of openssh-2 is.

ssh-keygen private keys export - new feature
Hello,
I had some difficulties in order to convert private keys between different
implementations of SSH.
So, I wrote the following patch to allow export of SSH2 RSA and DSA private
keys into IETF SECSH format.
Note that I also slightly revised the IETF SECSH key import code.
Usage: use of the "-e" option on a private key file generates an unencrypted
private key file in IETF SECSH

[PATCH] Adds support for SSH_FXP_LINK request to sftp-server and sftp client
Dear list,
Attached is a patch that adds support for the SSH_FXP_LINK request, as
described in draft-ietf-secsh-filexfer-07 onwards, to the sftp server
and client. It is for and has been tested on the current portable
snapshot but also applies to openbsd CVS.
Thanks,

SSH-2.2.0 (for Windows) and OpenSSH-2.1.1p1
I just upgraded my Windows SSH client from the 2.1.x version (whatever it
was) to 2.2.0 and am now experiencing difficulties connecting to my
OpenSSH-2.1.1p1 Linux servers.
I'm not as up-to-speed as I should be on the inner workings of the
handshakes that go on, but from the debug logs and from trying different
connection methods, it seems to be isolated to using publickeys. This

Enhance sftp protocol: get SHA hash of file
Hi,
it would be great, if the sftp protocol could be
enhanced: get sha (or other hash value) from a file or part of a file.
This would make it possible to run a rsync like file transfer
on sftp.
I would suggest a protocol like this
Client sends to Server:
get-supported hash-methods
returns whitespace seperated list like md5 sha1 sha256 ....
get-hash HASH-METHOD FILENAME STARTOFFSET

dovecot-sieve with FreeBSD
Hello,
I've a test system with postfix (SMTP), dovecot (IMAP only) and covecot-LDA (MDA) under FreeBSD-6.1. Currently everything works fine. But I wasn't able to install dovecot-sieve from the CVS. Does anyone has a small documentation howto install dovecot-sieve on FreeBSD.
Thanks.

[SFTP] Read from write-only file not returning error
Hello,
I am investigating a data-loss bug in SSHFS
(https://github.com/libfuse/sshfs/issues/72). While the root cause is in
SSHFS and has already been fixed, there seems to be some unfortunate
interaction with what I believe is an OpenSSH bug:
As far as I can tell, when sending a SSH_FXP_OPEN request with
SSH_FXF_WRITE (i.e., opening the file write only), and then following up
with a

Rekeying
Hello,
I apologize that this is slightly off topic.
According to the Internet Draft I found for SSH ver 1
(draft-ietf-tls-ssh-00.txt from Jun 13, 1996), the client or server can
send a SSH_MSG_KEXINIT at any time to force a new key exchange. I looked
through the code for OpenSSH and ssh-1.2.27 and can't find where it does
this. I then searched the Secure Shell mailing list archives and saw

ssh(R) trademark issues: comments and proposal
I'd like to address several issues raised by people in relation to my
notice of the ssh(R) trademark to the OpenSSH group. Also, I would
like to make a proposal to the community for resolving this issue
(included at the end).
First, I'll answer a number of questions and arguments presented in
the discussion.

pks for openssh
I was directed to the following site by one of our customers regarding
a keyserver built into openssh. There's a patch for 3.4p1 on their
site, but the license isn't very clear, nor is it clear if they have
approached the openssh team regarding the inclusion of this subsystem
into openssh proper.
I've been asked to patch Mandrake's openssh with this feature, but I'm
