SSH connection hangs with ipchains/RH6.2/OpenSSH 2.5.1p1 (but not <= 2.3.0p1)
I just recently installed OpenSSH 2.5.1p1 on a RH6.2 box (kernel
2.2.17). I run ipchains to do packet filtering, allowing incoming
connections only to 22 and 80 (and some other ports for specific
machines). I was able to run prior versions of openssh in this fashion
(I've run it from the first release, I think). Upon installing 2.5.1p1
I found that my attempts to connect hang, here is ssh

SSH connection hangs with ipchains/RH6.2/OpenSSH 2.5.1p1 (butnot <= 2.3.0p1)
I figured this out -- looks like 2.5.1p1 is now using ports < 1024 on
the client side (wasn't before?). I had a ipchains rule to allow ACK
packets to 1024:65535, which was good enough for <= 2.3.0p1 :
#allow only ACK tcp packed
ipchains -A input -j ACCEPT -i eth0 -s any/0 --dport 1024:65535 -p tcp !
-y
So I added the following :
#allow return from ssh connections
ipchains -A input -j

MCMCglmm priors including phylogeny
Hi all,
I'm hoping I might be able to get some help with some issues specifying priors for MCMCglmm.
I'm trying to fit a gaussian glmm using MCMCglmm to a data set with two (correlated) response variables. The response variables are both logit-transformed proportions (there are a few reasons why I've chosen these with gaussian error over binomal glmm, which I won't go into).

problem compiling with linux
Dear Jean-Marc Valin,
I tried what you said, to complile just libspeex, as there was
no "configure" file inside the folder "libspeex" I copied it from
parent directory (I guess I am not wrong doing that), ya it configures
well with the command
# ./configure --enable-blackfin-asm --enable-fixed-point --host=bfin-uclinux
but for the <make> command it is

Syslog facility in Linux
Hi !
While browsing Linux manpages (man 3 syslog) I noticed that the manual
says that the LOG_AUTH facility is deprecated use LOG_AUTHPRIV instead.
Is there a good reason why OpenSSH doesn't have an option to use
LOG_AUTHPRIV facility ? (Looks like that tcpd/telnet etc. use the AUTHPRIV
facility (in RH6.2)).
Shouldn't be too hard to add the AUTH_PRIV facility ?
Cheers,
-Jarno

Cannot see any clients in the "network neighborhood"
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hi,
I had a working 2.0.6 samba on a RH6.2 system with a 2.4.14
kernel. Clients are all win98/win95 except a win/me laptop. I recently
upgraded to 2.2.3a ( from source) and since then I cannot see any of
the clients in the "network neighborhood". I cannot even see the
workgroup under the "entire network". All clents are

Multi-Seat using Thin Clients
Hello
I have been wanting to set up a multi-seat system built around my linux
desktop. Several years ago I set up a multi-seat system using X11. It
difficult to setup and cause many different system errors. My new
desktop supports VT-d but the VGA passthru is still too experimental for
me at this point.
I have looked at the USB display link but sounds like there is a

rh62 suid files
Hi,
I believe having less root setuid binaries on system is The Way ...
so:
Why does RH6.2 ships with /sbin/dump & /sbin/restore root setuid? These
are for sysadmins, not for regular users I hope.
Is /sbin/unix_chkpwd really used and what is it used for? I haven't find
anything about it in pam documentation.
Is it really necessary to ship /usr/bin/gpasswd and /usr/bin/newgrp? Does

Softphones on thin clients...
Does anyone know if you can use softphones on thin clients? I have a
new customer that wants to use Eyebeam (about 10 users) on a thin client
platform. Each user has a little box on their desk that has a USB port,
mic and headphone jacks and monitor.
I am worried about conflicts when running 10 softphones on the same
server since they will all try to use por 5060.

Getting out of an embedded function safely - use try?
Helpers.
An instrument sends me data that is mostly nonlinear. I have a group of
functions to manipulate this data so that it is useful to the user. One
of them involves a nls model that called to fit a line to the data and
returns the fits. This works well 99 out of 100 times. Occasionally, the
sensor sends some bad data to which a nls model cannot be fit. When that
happens, the nls function

Rshaper Weirdness
Hello, guys, I am trying to get rshaper 2.01 to work on our Redhat 6.2 servers, but it does not seem to be able to control the bandwidth usage, here are the details,
1. Our production servers are all Redhat 6.2 with Kernel 2.2.19-6.2.12, the software we use are customized specifically for RH6.2, so I can''t upgrade to 2.4 kernel.
2. On my test server with the same RH6.2 and kernel (it has

Request: Please incorporate Hideaki Gotos Watchdog patch into OpenSSH
Hello,
Hideaki Goto has written a patch for OpenSSH that adds heartbeat and watchdog
functions to OpenSSH:
http://www.sc.isc.tohoku.ac.jp/~hgot/sources/openssh-watchdog.html
The heartbeat function sends an SSH_MSG_IGNORE packet every <n> seconds to
the server, and the watchdog function checks incoming packets only to see if
the connection has been interrupted.
Where I work, all Internet
