retaining character matrices when combining into data frames
Hello everyone, If I want to convert or combine a (large) character matrix into a data frame without having any of its columns convert into a factor class, is there a simple solution? I() says it will operate on 'an object' but it seems that unless the object is a vector, the results are not what I expect. For instance, if g is a 2x2 character matrix, as.data.frame(I(g)) will return an

need help with compiling openssh
hi, I'm trying to compile OpenSSH, latest version on my Linux box. I know that it requires openssl and I've installed the 0.9.5a and it's working just fine. Now when I'm trying to ./configure the openssh with the options ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/bin/openssh/ --without-pam --without-shadow --with-tcp-wrappers It's giving me checking for openssl directory... configure:

They also occur when using a 0.9.5a client connecting to a 0.9.6-beta server. Connections fail with

Pine 4.02 and directory perms
Hey linux-security-ers: I just compiled/installed Pine 4.02 for my RH 5.0 machine today (didn't see an RPM last time I checked ftp.redhat.com:/pub/contrib), and after I got it installed, it kept giving me errors about not being able to create a lockfile when dinking with my mailspool in /var/spool/mail. After doing some digging on DejaNews and the Pine website, I find a document who says the

calendar-based time-series in R
Hello, I am trying to switch to R from S-PLUS 6.1, and one problem I am having is using R for manipulation of calendar-based time-series. In S-PLUS, I commonly use the functions timeSequence(), timeDate(), and timeSeries() to align/average/aggregate data; and I also do a lot of plotting of time-series data (with calendar-based labels on the x-axis). I was wondering if anyone is familiar with

Using apply for two datasets
I can run one-sample t-test on an array, for example a matrix myData1, with the following apply(myData1, 2, t.test) Is there a similar fashion using apply() or something else to run 2-sample t-test with datasets from two groups, myData1 and myData2, without looping? TIA, Gang

how to replace NA values in a list
I have a matrix named "spec" (see below), it is a 6x3 matrix, and each element of spec is a list. For example, spec[1,"wavenumber"] is a list, and it contains 1876 numeric numbers and NAs. I want to replace the NAs to zero, but don't know how to change it, the difficulty may be all the elements are of the class list, so it is hard to change. Thank you for your help!

I've searched everywhere for a solution but was unsuccessful: I went to samba.org and followed the examples in http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/ The examples are great... Rails Book finally hits Japan
...and everybody is struggling with the globalization/localization. I''ve been monitoring the Japanese rails mailing list and there''s a Tokyo study group already drawing attention. I think they''re having their fourth meeting soon. There''s a couple toy applications out there and I believe cookpad.com is currently being rewritten with rails in the background.
