OT: SMART warning on hard drive, same warning for 2 1 /2 years
My wife's box has a very intermittent problem, when booting from the Maxtor IDE hard drive. This has been going on for about 2 1/2 years.... The box is a Compaq EVO D300v for the Enterprise. When it boots, there is a SMART advisory from the BIOS that says failure is immenient. Occasionally, it will not boot, because the BIOS does not see the hard drive. I replaced the EIDE cable, but the

slow usb hard disk performance.
Dear All, I tried a USB2 Maxtor One touch II external hard disk on a couple of my Centos 4.2 boxes and found it initiallised the SCSI subsystem ok and added device "sda". But the performance is miserable, yet the same hardware running XP the performance is satisfactory. HDPARM gives results varying from 120k/sec to , at its peak 4.75M/s on a USB 2 machine, still very poor by any

CentOS 6.4 installation fails with message "No usable disks have been found"
Hi folks, I inherited a very old computer (I guess about 8 years old) which I'd like to use for some training on CentOS. I downloaded images for CentOS 6.4 i386 (DVD 1 and 2) and burned them onto discs. After inserting DVD 1 into drive and booting, on the "Welcome to CentOS 6.4!" screen I select "Install or upgrade an existing system". I then skip the media test and

CentOS 5 + Nforce 4 SLI Intel SATA problems
I've been having an extremely hard time using the on board SATA controller on my nvidia based board. I have two 160gig Maxtor SATA drives attached to the on board controller, setup as software raid0. The problem is the array is extremely unreliable, where I'm getting constant I/O errors like: sd 0:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x00040000 end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector

msdosfs vs 250Gb hard disk
I am attempting to utilise a 250Gb Maxtor external Firewire drive. To obtain maximum portability I would prefer to format it as FAT32 (it comes formatted that way) - that way Windows, Linux and FreeBSD machines can access it. Unfortunately FreeBSD doesn't grok really large FAT32 partitions :( When I attempt to mount it, I get -> mountmsdosfs(): disk too big, sorry The code in question..

CentOS 4.3 occasionally locking up accessing IDE drive
For those who haven't seen my several previous postings about problems with this (now not quite so) new PC, I have an ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard. The boot drive and primary filesystems are on an SATA disk and I'm having no problem with that. However, I recently plugged in a couple of IDE drives salvaged from my old PCs and I'm running into trouble with one of those. The drive

PATA Hard Drive woes
Hi All. Yesterday I was installing Centos 5.5 to my web server, and it looks like the main hard drive has gone AWOL. Fedora 12 put the file system into r/o mode. The drive is an Hitachi, still under warranty. There are bad sectors on it, and running the Hitachi DFT tool confirms this. Also I cannot repair the bad sectors. Would this be caused by a faulty I/O chip, or is it safe to say

Performance Issue: Red Hat vs SuSE
Hi All, A couple of days ago I posted a query here about the loss of performance on my backup server after I moved from Red Hat 7.3 to SuSE 8.1. It appears as though, with no hardware or script changes, that my backup process takes 4 hours longer with SuSE 8.1. I'm doing (what I think is) a very simple script that basically employs SMBMOUNT, CP, and DIFF. Like this:

SATA controller compatibility
Greetings - I'm looking to put some cheap storage into my server, which is running centos 3. I'm looking at the Maxtor SATA/150 PCI Card and a big maxtor sata drive. I would like to make sure that CentOS has driver for this controller. I looked in Red Hat's hardware database and did some google'ing but I couldn't find any info to confirm that this card is compatible.

Hard drive write cache
I am looking at ways to harden my asterisk install to prevent computer related issues from happening. I am concerned about about disk write cache. That seems to be a major source of hard drive corruption on power failure. Hard Drive corruption is simply unacceptable for the 99.999% uptime requirements of my Asterisk install that needs to be as reliable as a proprietary PBX. Of course I will be

Raid with one disk?
Is it possible to set up a single disk raid (kind of redundant to call a single disk an array) but I've got a single SATA drive in the machine not doing anything. It's a 10k maxtor 74G drive, and what I really want is just to backup two home partitions. I can always reinstall the OS, but the data can't be recovered that easily. The mobo supports raid-0,1 and jbod. Suggestions? --
