sftp should work regardless of the user's shell since it is invoked as
a ssh subsystem

If you're saying that the scp protocol is an unfixable mess then the
openssh team has been agreeing[0] with you for at least a decade and a
half. We fix what we can, but some

Core dump in sftp from CVS
Hi All.
As I mentioned earlier, I've been having weird failures with both sshd
and sftp. The sshd one turned out the be my fault (misplaced "}", grr)
but the sftp one doesn't appear to be.
The sftp regression tests fail on the current portable tree on Solaris
and AIX (with my own mods to auth.c and regress/, but I don't think
that's related). The test that fails is:

I tried it on NetBSD/sparc 1.5.2. The first problem was obvious:
gcc [flags] -c sftp-int.c
sftp-int.c:32: readline/readline.h: No such file or directory
sftp-int.c:33: readline/history.h: No such file or directory

OpenSSH snaps have sftp libedit (command line history/editing) support
Hi All.
For a couple of weeks, the Portable snapshots have contained optional
support for NetBSD's libedit in the sftp client, thanks to djm's work in
OpenBSD. It's enabled with: ./configure --with-libedit.
If enabled, sftp gains command history, recall and line editing (and
probably other features too, I haven't looked into libedit's
capabilities much). If not

It's likely that libcrypto.so isn't in LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Try running this and
see if you get an error:
$ ssh yourserver /usr/local/openssh/libexec/sftp-server
or add something like:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:/path/to/ssl/lib
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
