Alert icon for yum
Hi all. I have a simple question: CentOS relies mostly on "yum" to
keep systems up to date, although I understand that like on RHEL,
"up2date" is also available. On my system I've run both KDE and GNOME
as Graphical Desktops under X (though I presently run GNOME), and I've
noticed that there is an applet called "CentOS Network Alert Icon" (from

Network card w/special module
Hello, I have this cheap network card which insists on me compiling its own
sundance.ko module every time I update my kernel release. I had the poor
idea to leave nightly yum service enabled on this remote server, only to
find my network was gone at the following reboot. Had to go there, figure
out that kernel stuff is carefully avoided by up2date, but not so by yum
service, and rebuild.

CentOS 4.4 and other software?
I just installed CentOS 4.4 on my laptop, having good experience with
Debian, Fedora Core 5, and RHEL4. I really like 4.4's overall appearance
(meshing of RHEL4 and FC5), but what I have yet to figure out is how to
access repositories for applications that are not part of the default
install, such as ncftp. I invoked and updated yum, but it had no idea.
I would also like to see what

installing kde using up2date
Hi,
I have already installed 4.2 on my laptop, I only chose GNOME at install
time.
I now need to use up2date to install kde (I wish to install twinkle
softphone).
What is the correct way to do that.
I did:
up2date kde*
up2date -u kde*
up2date -i kde*
It printed a listing of the packages but did not install them.
Thanks,
Jerry

yum vs up2date
Which is better? Why?
I know yum is the official update mechanism here and in Fedora Core, but
that doesn't make yum better than up2date any more than Windows NT was
better than OS/2.
Let's try to keep the discussion objective:-)
I'm asking, hoping for some insights into why RH might (apparently) be
moving to yum in preference to up2date (yum is now used within Anaconda).

small issue with bind
I tried to do a "yum install bind" and it said no packages found
I then tried up2date bind and it installed bind for me.
Is yum not completely setup correctly?
Just thought th yum install bind would have worked also.
I am using centos 4.3 x86_64. DNS was not selected as package to install
when my system was built.

AMD x2 and make
Is there a special command or anything to get a "make" process
take advantage of SMP with the AMD x2. I mean when I type make
is it dispatching 2 compiles at a time? How do know it is or how do
I tell it to take full advantage of the DUAL processor.
Thanks,

Can up2date use a local yum mirror?
If so, how do you configure the up2date client that comes with CentOS
to look at the local yum mirror? Conversely, how do you disable the
CentOS Network Alert Notification Tool so that users won't see the
"throbbing red circle" and be tempted to launch the up2date client?
Thanks,

analog channels calling out not detect DTMF
I have a TDM2402E card.
Occasionally I have noticed that a number I call that gives and IVR
the DTMF keys are not detected. All other times the DTMF works fine.

Up2Date and yum failing
I have 2 new servers built from 4.3 isos. I want to update them but
cannot do that because of update issues:
Up2date fails because of a several dependency issues.
yum update fails because of a problem with the au mirrors. yum can find
the mirrors but not the headers.
Cheers

OT - yum missing from a RHEL4 server???
Hi List;
Sorry for the OT post. However I suspect if anyone outside of RH can help with
this question it would be this list.
I'm starting a new contract with a shop that knows little about Linux and I'm
helping pave the way. I've "inherited" an existing Linux install (RHEL4). I
want to setup some tools but I find that yum is not installed. Is this normal
for a RH box ? I

X11 build
Morning...
I have a package that I think wants to compile against the X11 source tree.
http://openchrome.org - its a snapshot from there....
Anyway the command it tells me to run is:
xmkmf /usr/src/xc
make
make install
This is to build a updated X graphics driver...
However when I do this I get errors as there is not /usr/src/xc (no
surprise)
I did then "up2date xorg-x11-sdk"

[PATCH] Use RHN to retrieve replacement packages
For guests registered with Red Hat Network, this patch allows for
the conversion process to use RHN to download appropriate kernel
package and its dependencies.
We use yum on RHEL-5, up2date libraries on RHEL-4.
We install matching kernel version whenever possible, latest available
kernel version otherwise.
_discover_kernel routine has been extended to return version-release

I would like to configure my puppet to use "yum" instead "up2date" (default

How can I do this? :)
Thanks!

Yum question - RHEL4
Hi
this is technically a RHEL4 question but i hope it can be answered here...
Does RHEL4 do yum OK ? I kix a lot of boxes and it would be great to run
the update after the build automajically rather than running through the
up2date registration and using that method. I would also rather not pay
lots for satellite server.
If i setup my own RHEL repo can i use yum against this? Or any other
