Loading syslinux from a USB HDD
Thanks Nazo, for that amazing long answer.
The problem is, though, that you're talking to an _XP user_, so I
can't: "Just use dd with
if=/dev/sda" because that's Dutch to me. I even had trouble
understanding what a "distro" was, till I looked it up. And I can't run
"mkdiskimage", because it doesn't run under XP. Also, according to

Problem booting from CF/SD cards and USB Flashdrives using syslinux
I've run into a rather odd problem. It seems that I can format and make
bootable CF/SD cards and USB Flashdrives under Windows 98SE and MS-DOS
6.22 that will boot to a A: prompt on my system.
But when I try making the same CF/SD cards and USB Flashdrives bootable
under linux using syslinux I get nothing, not even a error message. It's
like the syslinux bootloader doesn't even

10 year old question
Hi All,
I used to run webdt.org and this was built to support a tablet computer that hit the market around the late 90?s. DT Research makes them and they get sold to mostly enterprise applications. That being said there are still a few hundred thousand of these in circulation.
The hardware is a bit of a hack. Its usb1.1 with a 44 pin flash module on 44 pin pata half height headers. MFGR

Trying to figure out why my Cruzer Micro 512"MB" won't boot.
Office Depot ran a deal with a Cruzer Micro 512MB (actually, around
488MiB) for about $20 after a rebate I may not see for months. I saw
the ad yesterday and stopped by pretty well first thing this afternoon
to snatch one up while they were still there since I've been having to
make do with two 256MB drives to hold all the data I neded since one
drive couldn't hold enough (though I must

Used mkdiskimage script on wrong drive!
I was trying to setup dsl (damn small linux) to boot off a usb drive. I found my BIOS wasn't booting from it when using a USB-HDD mode so I found a page for using SYSLINUX to set it up in USB-ZIP mode (http://syslinux.zytor.com/usbkey.php).
I made a mistake and (doing exactly what the page warned against not doing) used the mkdiskimage command on the wrong drive (a 230Gb NTFS external

Can WINE help me using Dell Axim from Puppy Linux 511?
Since I'm new to this forum I probably I'm doing something wrong, I'm sorry if this's the case!
I don't have a windows base system, solely Puppy Linux. I do have an Axim, though; can't do hardly anything useful with it since starting using just Linux. Went through many pages about WINE but failed to locate any useful info. That's the reason for posting my issue here.

After USB boot problems on Gigabyte GA-M55Plus-S3G
Hi,

It appears to be related to the choice of CHS addressing with
the FAT filesystem. This opens the door for misperceived factors
of heads per cylinder and sectors per heads.
My current suspicion is that the partition end did not expose
the effective factors in its end CHS address, so

lss broken when upgraded 4.05 to 6.03
Hi,
I have just joined the list.
I am the original creator of Puppy Linux, now letting other guys take
the reins, and I am working on a fork of Puppy called Quirky Linux,
where I try various experimental ideas.
Up until now, in Puppy and all offshoots, we have used syslinux 4.05 or older.
Over the last few days I have been testing 6.03 (using the binary DEBs
from Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn),

Swfdec and Ffmpeg only
Hi,
I'm the founder and still very active developer of Puppy Linux, and a
variant named Quirky. Puppy is a cut-down distro, typically 100MB
live-CD. We have always used the Adobe Flash player, though I have
stayed with the Flash 9 player (9.0.48.0) due to its smaller size.
Puppy also has ffmpeg, xine-lib and gxine.
Recently I have been experimenting with Swfdec and Swfdec-mozilla. I

Hardware suggestion and XEN selection
I got two machines to setup:
A. existing one:
AMD Athlon, 2GB RAM,
C: used for Windows XP (40 G), D: used for Windows data
two partitions, each 40 G are not used yet
I would like to use the two partitions to setup XEN and within XP, SuSE
Linux 10.1, Puppy Linux 1.09CE and Puppy Linux 2.0alpha. SuSE should be
my main window, while XP will be used only if there is no Linux
counterpart, Puppys

backing up email / saving maildir on external hard drives
Hello,
Yesterday I tried to back up a 40GB maildir .
I tried to move the maildir from home to external HDD but failed. Decided
then to compress it(which took several hours). Now changing the disk format
from FAT to exFAT to allow the transfer for the large compressed file.
How does one back up emails on a external drive?
Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

backing up email / saving maildir on external hard drives
Dear Steve,
Very valuable info. Appreciate it and will be careful when using terms.
Actually I think I should just use rsync without compressing. The reason
why I started compressing was because the GUI gave some errors when I was
trying to copy then files.
I'll just rsync the data from my laptop HDD to my external drive(without
compressing)
Thanks

Trying to multiboot bartpe & puppy linux on a usb flash with syslinux
Hey list,
I have an older 2005 Uniwill 259ia3 with a Phoenix bios.
Flash booting is limited to keys 512 MB or less!
Here's my setup recipe:
used the HP utility v. 2.0.6 giving me this geometry
---------------- fdisk -l -----------
Disk /dev/sdb: 493 MB, 493879296 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
