PXELINUX v. bpbatch
What is the difference between PXELINUX and bpbatch ? AFAICT, bpbatch doe not require a TFTP server which supports the 'tsize' option. So in the absence of such a server, I may need to explore bpbatch... It seems that bpbatch can be used to remotely boot DOS. Can PXELINUX also do this? -- John

MEMDISK - floppy=1 Outputs: Disk is hard disk, 1440 K, C/H/S = 80/20/18

MEMDISK without floppy drive
I tried to use memdisk 2.06 to boot a floppy image on my notebook which doesn't have a floppy drive. The boot failed, because the bootstrap code tried to reset the floppy drive (int13, ah=00). Memdisk passes reset calls on to the original int13 handler, which returns failure, because there is no floppy drive to reset (#1). Also i noted that some boot records (notably some created by

Memdisk doesn't work without floppy drive
Hi, I stumbled on a rather odd problem. A brand new HP Compaq dx2200 computer didn't want to boot up pxelinux+memdisk image. The computer just gave "Disk I/O error" and stopped there. Workaround was rather simple... Just attach regular floppy drive to the motherboard and everything started working fine. I tried with older 2.05 (pxelinux+memdisk) and newer 3.31. Both produced

Usin ISO Linux & Memdisk to create a Viritual Floppy drive that Linux & Windows can load driver disk from.
Hi, It is becoming a bad habit for big OEM vendors to sell computers & servers without floppy drives. Unfortunatly both Windows and Linux (RedHat) need a floppy drive to load storage drivers etc. during installation. This is what I was thinking: Use ISOLINUX and MEMDISK to load a floppy image of a driver disk into memory as a viritual floppy drive "A:"/"/dev/fda" And then

Laptop+SDMMC+Extlinux+Memdisk+Floppy images=headaches
Hello syslinuxers I'm stuck with a scientific problem which gives me headaches: I have a laptop (Gateway MX3410) which has a SD memory card reader. Recently an interesting thought crossed my mind: why don't I setup a 2GB SD card as a harddrive and put some rescue tools on it. So I dug on the net and I came across the idea of using memdisk to boot floppy images without the need of a

memdisk 1680K floppy support
Hi, I was wondering if 1680K floppy support in memdisk was planned, impossible or undesirable :) I noticed RIP is providing a slightly more stuffed 1680K floppy (but no 2880K floppy) and I had hoped memdisk could support this. Kind regards, -- dag wieers, dag at wieers.com, http://dag.wieers.com/ -- [all I want is a warm bed and a kind word and unlimited power]

pxelinux/memdisk booting MSDOS floppy image requires local floppy disk
I found that if I do not have a local floppy installed and enabled on my client, I will get the error 'Non-system disk' when I try to boot DOS floppy images. NT or Syslinux floppy images boot fine. If I enable the floppy in the BIOS, then it boots the DOS floppies just fine. Is this normal? Is there a workaround? There are MS-DOS images, so perhaps this is an MS-DOS limitation. --

SYSLINUX 3.32-pre4 released: MEMDISK floppy drive workaround
Hi all, I have pushed out a SYSLINUX 3.32-pre4. This version attempts to work around the "missing floppy drive" issue. If you have systems on which MEMDISK doesn't work without a floppy drive, I would appreciate it if you would test this out. -hpa

memdisk and floppy images on 4801
Im trying to boot memtest86 via pxelinux, memdisk, I found this advice on http://forum.x86-secret.com/viewtopic.php?t=2906 folks are making the image match a floppy size by one of the following: dd if=memtest86+-1.xx.bin of=memtest.img bs=360k count=1 conv=sync or dd bs=360k count=1 conv=sync if=memtest86+-1.xx.bin|gzip > memtest.gz I did the former, it did suppress the warning/errors I saw

Is it possible with syslinux efi support (6.0) chainload the memdisk and load a DOS Floppy image?
Hello, I'm investigating ways to boot a DOS floppy image stored on the FAT32 EFI System Partition using Syslinux and Memdisk. The system will be running Win8 using UEFI mode (GPT disks) and secure boot off. Change the Windows efi boot loader is the easy part... With the current syslinux's alpha version (6.0), is it possible to boot the syslinux's efi module from the FAT32 EFI

memdisk and floppy controllers
Hi, just tried memdisk - it works, even with token-ring network cards! I've some problems with dos 6.22 on one machine, though. This one doesn't have a floppy controller (e.g. linux reports that it didn't find any controller). The Dos 6.22 boot disk is loaded, then the boot sector is started and tells me that it can't load the system (German message: 'Kein System oder

Problem with syslinux booting via network in floppy image
Hi as described on the syslinux pxe webpage: A multi-hardware boot floppy is included with Windows Server 2000 and 2003. A company called Argon Technology used to offer a free-as-in-beer updated version, but is seems to have gone fully commercial. This floppy (which can also be burned to a CD using El Torito in floppy-emulation mode), is known to work with PXELINUX 2.03 or later only I'm

Memdisk and big floppy images
Dear Syslinux folks, For a firmware update I am following the Gentoo Wiki [1] to create a floppy image of 20 MB, so that the vendor update utility fits. Unfortunately, FreeDOS does not load, and it seems to hang loading the FreeDOS kernel. The original FreeDOS image boots. Do you know if that issue is memdisk related? It?s started from GRUB with the commands below. linux16 /boot/memdisk

I have 4 different types of PC's here that i'm trying to boot by USB stick. It works fine on 3 of them, but on the 4th, A HP/Compaq dx2200 MT, memdisk will not boot the .ima

Hard disk image to use with Memdisk
Hallo I would like to have an image of about 8Mb to boot with ISOLINUX and MEMDISK. I am not able to create an image complete of the MBR, as MEMDISK requires. I think I should emulate an 8Mb disk in memory or on a file, but I am able to do so only for a 'single partition'. Could you please suggest me a way to obtain the image? I can use Linux or Windows tools, it does not matter.

Memdisk and big floppy images
The narod.ru images are super outdated (FreeDOS kernel 2028) unfortunately. If you are interested I could provide a 5MB FDD image template based on FreeDOS 2041 kernel (the latest available at that time in 2014) where you would just inject your ROM and EXE (and possibly adjust autoexec.bat to autostart/apply the FW update). It's a minimal FreeDOS FDD image that defaults to a clean boot with
