How many people use LVM's in their production servers? Are they reliable for use in these sorts of systems? I am asking this because i was reading the LVM Howto about upgrading discs etc. Regards, Peter

performance lost in using a software raid array with only 1 disk
Is there any performance lost in using a software raid array with only 1 disk? I was wanting to use the mdadm monitoring tools to monitor the machines single disk drive for failures and such. Is there any performance hit for such a setup? Some machines have RAID some machines dont (for me) and I was thinking about a common setup. Also then if I want in the future I can actually just add the

question on software raid
dmesg is not reporting any issues. The /proc/mdstat looks fine. md0 : active raid1 sdb1[1] sda1[0] X blocks [2/2] [UU] however /var/log/messages says: smartd[3392] Device /dev/sda 20 offline uncorrectable sectors The machine is running fine.. raid array looks good - what is up with smartd? Raid with one disk?
Is it possible to set up a single disk raid (kind of redundant to call a single disk an array) but I've got a single SATA drive in the machine not doing anything. It's a 10k maxtor 74G drive, and what I really want is just to backup two home partitions. I can always reinstall the OS, but the data can't be recovered that easily. The mobo supports raid-0,1 and jbod. Suggestions? --

I've no idea what happened, but the box I was working on last week has a *second* bad drive. Actually, I'm starting to wonder about that particulare hot-swap bay. Anyway, mdadm --detail shows /dev/sdb1 remove. I've added /dev/sdi1... but see both /dev/sdh1 and /dev/sdi1 as spare, and have yet to find a reliable way to make either one active. Actually, I would have expected the linux

Adding a new disk to an existing raid 10
Dear all, I'm not used to handling software raid. I've inherited a server which has raid 10 set. one of our disks failed, and it's to be replaced today. My question is; any hint how to add this new disk to the existing raid array ? first thought is :- Create identical partitions as other disks in the array i'd like to add it to.- add it to raid. Though i'm extremely worried of

Software RAID1 Failure Help
I am running software RAID1 on a somewhat critical server. Today I noticed one drive is giving errors. Good thing I had RAID. I planned on upgrading this server in next month or so. Just wandering if there was an easy way to fix this to avoid rushing the upgrade? Having a single drive is slowing down reads as well, I think. Thanks. more software raid questions
hi all! back in Aug several of you assisted me in solving a problem where one of my drives had dropped out of (or been kicked out of) the raid1 array. something vaguely similar appears to have happened just a few mins ago, upon rebooting after a small update. I received four emails like this, one for /dev/md0, one for /dev/md1, one for /dev/md125 and one for /dev/md126: Subject: DegradedArray
