chert-update creates a db with some errors
I've some problems converting a xapian db, created with core 1.1.3 (using
chert), to the new chert format.
I'm using xapian-chert-update, compiled from the core-1.2.4.
The conversion seems to run without errors:

Chert backend
As Chert backend is not the default Xapian backend for the 1.2 branch, I am thinking about switching from Flint to Chert. However, I am wondering how do both compare in performance and index size?
My indexes are updated quite frequently, so this is my priority. Which is better in this case?

Need info on chert and flint
Hi,
I am new to xapian and read somewhere that xapain was using flint before
released version 1.1 now it is using chert.
I am looking for differences between both flint vs chert respective to
xapian and advantages of chert.
thanks

chert vs flint vs lucene
Hi,
What's the main difference between chert and flint? What above vs lucene?
I am mainly asking about data structure (lexicon, posting list, document
data), what's in memory, what's on disk, hash vs b-tree and reasons behind
them.
Any pointer is appreciated.
Thanks!
Crystal

brass and chert / xapian port to Interix
Report by Eric Lindblad 30-09-2015
http://www.ericlindblad.blogspot.com
The xapian-core-1.2.21 'ambiguous overload' error on the files /backends/brass/brass_check.cc and /backends/chert/chert_check.cc appear to be resultant of a bug reported in gcc-3.3.4, which was fixed for 3.4.2 [Sept. 6, 2004] and 3.5.

"Value in posting list too large" error with 1.1.4 (chert and brass, not flint)
Hi,
I've a program which:
1. Sets XAPIAN_FLUSH_THRESHOLD=1000
2. Opens a (new) database for write
3. Indexes a few thousand documents
4. Periodically also does queries on the database
With 1.1.4, with certain document sets (basically a particular mail
folder of mine), Enquire.get_mset() sometimes (but not always) triggers
a "RangeError: Value in posting list too

automatically authenticate domain logged-on users ina pache with AD/NTDOM?
Yeah, "interoperate over either NTLM or Kerberos to provide SSO", that's
exactly what I'm talking about! Only, I want to trade IIS for apache@unix.
I can still use Explorer@windows for clients.
Very interesting, though, that Mozilla has been kerberized. I knew it would
happen, but I haven't read anything about that.
Thanks for the input,
Palle

Inf in expression (PR#326)
I was getting worried. 0.65 is the first version that I had not been
able to crash. Well the following gives a seg fault on Intel RH5.2
with R0.65.1:
plot(rnorm(20),xlab=expression(mu[Inf]))
You can guess what I was trying to do, as I used infty first and that
did not work. (I now know the correct formula.)

"TIMEOUT - WRITE_DMA" with SiI 3512 SATA on IBM eServer 326
Hi,
I have a problem, probably with the SiI 3512 SATA150 controller in a
dual-Opteron IBM eServer 326:
Every once a while the kernel issues a message like:
ad4: TIMEOUT - WRITE_DMA retrying (2 retries left) LBA=150190687
The system waits a few seconds and continues to work normally.
It typically occurs several times a day most likely depending on the
load of the (SATA connected) hard drive.

How go back from X.Y-RELEASE-pZ to X.Y-RELEASE?
We are currently using cvs for both source and ports.
I have begun changing to portsnap for ports, and I
would also like to try changing at least some of our
servers to freebsd-update.
But all servers have been patched, using either RELENG_8_3
or RELENG_9_0 as cvs tag. I need to revert them to their
respective RELEASE to be able to use freebsd-update.
Complete reinstall from eg CD is not an

drdb fails under xen
Under xen, either stock xen-2.0.1+linux-2.6.9 or Fedora''s latest
(2.6.10-1.1109_FC4), drdb (<http://www.drbd.org/>),as soon as I try to
write to one of its devices, causes "Badness" in the kernel and,
ultimately, a spontaneous reboot.
Under non-xen 2.6.10-1.1109_FC4 and 2.6.9-1.678_FC3, drbd works fine.
The error:
