selfsigned ssl certificate
Hello,
I need to setup a secure ssl site but I'm using a FC3 howto wich is not
compatibel anymore wwith Centos 4.2
Now I removed the standard crt.key and server.key files and used the make
testcert script in /etc/httpd/conf to create a new one with the appropriate
company name and such.
But this certificate requires a passphrase everytime apache starts and I
rather would like to remove

how do I set the listening IP on snmpd?
Hi,
Does anyone know if it''s possible to set a listening IP on snmpd?
On a CentOS 5.2 domU, it listens on 0.0.0.0 (effectively every IP on
the machine),
root@vps:[/]$ netstat -an | grep 161
udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:161 0.0.0.0:*
Yet, on a Debian 4.0 domU, it listens on 127.0.0.1.
sh-2.05b# netstat -an |grep 161
udp 0 0 127.0.0.1:161

Cacti-based monitoring
Hi,
I maintain several dom0 hosts, and I would like to monitor the following
with Cacti:
* the overall hypervisor CPU usage
* available hypervisor memory (e.g. memory that can be allocated to new
domUs)
and maybe:
* domU CPU usage
But the latter is not as important to me right now.
Anyone have any pointers on how I might do this? My knowledge of Cacti
is very basic. Basically: has anyone

reboot long uptimes?
Hi,
I was just wondering if I should reboot some servers that are running over
180 days?
They are still stable and have no problems, also top shows no zombie
processes or such, but maybe it's better for the hardware (like ext3 disk
checks f.e.) to reboot every six months...
btw this uptime really confirms me how stable Centos 4.x really is and so
I wonder how long some people's

IPTables GUIs
Hi,
This is semi-OT, but is Centos-related.
I'm looking for an IPTables GUI to help us with our expanding
network configuration. I know there's plenty out there, but most of
them seem to manage the firewall on the computer on which they run, or
only handle one firewall at a time. I need one that can easily manage
multiple firewalls from some sort of central location/repository, i.e.

e1000 gig nic howto?
We have a 10Gbps connection to our server so I need to be able to create VMs using the faster e1000 nics instead of the default Realtek 100Mbps ones but I''m not sure how to go about it.
Is there a walkthrough or "howto" or can someone point me at some simple instructions?
I''m using xen-3.0.3-105.el5_5.5 and Centos 5.5 kernel 2.6.18-194.32.1.el5.centos.plusxen

lmer and estimable
Hi everyone,
I'm using lmer and estimable (from packages lme4 and gmodels respectively) and have the disconcerting happening that when I run exactly the same code, I get different results! In checking this out by running the code 50x, it seems to be that answers may be randomly deviating around those which I get from another stats package (GenStat, using the linear mixed models functionality

Repair Filesystem prompt , after inode has illegal blocks
hi All,
A fault on our SAN dropped us down to a read-only filesystem and after reboot,
we have an "Unexpected Inconsistency" and I am being instructed by the boot to run fsck manually
without -a or -p (this was after I think processing around 15% of the filesystem)
The specific message is "inode 27344909 has illegal blocks"
I recall running fsck some years ago on smaller

install won't boot
Circumstances:
The system is a hardware duplicate of a system that installed and works
for many months. Running CentOS 4.x.
The system was previously in service with CentOS 3.x and I'm trying to
install CentOS 4.1 on it from downloaded CDs which have worked
previously (these are the same CDs used to install the system that's
working).
Software RAID.

Multiple graphics windows
Hi,
Is it possible to have multiple graphics windows in R? I am running a
function that plots 12 graphs and currently I'm using
par(mfrow=c(3,4),..) etc but ideally I would like to have the output in
separate graphics windows.
Thanks,
Katarina

not using LVM for Linux VM guests?
I came across an old post comment yesterday (from http://echenh.blogspot.com/2010/04/how-to-extend-lvm-on-vmware-guest-os.html ) discussing the "hack" of LVM on Linux VM guests and whether it's better not to use it to simplify disk management.
I've re-posted the comment below, does it sound reasonable? Is it better to not use LVM on Linux VM guests?

nic bonding
I've just setup nic bonding on our server (DL585-G7 running Centos 5.5 x86_64) as detailed on the wiki: http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/BondingInterfaces and all seems fine but from other "howto's" I've seen on the web, they're should be a /proc/net/bond0/info
As far as I can see, I don't have one and I'm not sure if it should be there or its absence is a

SWAT is working but shows smbd/nmbd: not running
Hi all,
I had nForce3 motherboard that has broken. Than I bought nForce4
motherboard. I connected old hard disk to this new nForce4 motherboard. For
net and sound support I download drivers from nvidia.com site. This driver
asks kernel source to be on local disk and gcc compiler.
After I installed kernel source and gcc, driver is successfully installed.

good resources for making RPMs
Could anyone recommend some good resources I might go to for making an RPM?
(Ultimately, I'd like to make a dpkg. I hear alien is a good way to do
that, but am open to any other ways of doing so.)

Loss of Prompt & Cursor
When I log into a virtual console as ordinary user, I initially have a
prompt & cursor. After I
print 24 lines or more, the last visible (24th) line will be data
instead of the prompt & cursor. The up arrow no longer gives the
previous commands. A clear command will restore the prompt & cursor.
This bug first appeared after I installed CentOS5. I do not believe it
is a CentOS5
