Sourcing files with Umlaut in path no longer works
Dear helpeRs,
on my new machine - Windows 7 64Bit, R 2.15-2, I can no longer source
files for which the path contains the o-Umlaut (?). As a historical
burden, my username is Gr?mping and contains that Umlaut (I wouldn't
have chosen it now, but decided to keep it for easy transfer). I have
had the difficulty that I couldn't use the R CMD tools on files with
Umlauts in the path (and

Problem with umlaut on windows server
Hallo Samba-users,
I've got a problem mounting a windows-share via mount / smbmount:
The mount itself works without any problem, but when I try to enter a directory with a Umlaut (such as "?,?,?") the command fails. All the umlauts are replaced with a question mark when I "ls" in the directory which contains the directory with the umlaut.

we want to use samba to connect a windows machine and a linux server, the
linux machine should read the windows-filesystem to backup it. in samba 2.xx
we wasn't able to teach samba the german umlauts or filenames containing a
blank. we tried the character substitution in smb.conf and of course we
called smbmount with iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=cp850, but unforunatly it

Sweave special characters problem
Dear all,
I use Sweave to create my reports. Unfortunately my script crashes whenever I my R code contains special characters like umlauts.
Is there a way to to escape special characters in Sweave... This is the line that crashes Sweave:
gl_bybranch = ddply(new_wans,.(period,Branchen), function(X) data.frame(Gesch?ftslage=mean(X$sentiment)))
Unfortunately I can't just rename it, because I

factor levels with umlauts
Hi all
I have to generate some test data for import in an sql database. The
database is meant for web-based data entry in a study taking place in a
german speaking region, so factor levels of the variables include umlauts.
The variables in the dataframe t.muster are generated e.g. like this:
t.muster$screening <- rep("ausgef?llt",50)
and exported to a .csv file by:

Problem with German Umlauts
Hi @all...
Following configuration i used before samba 3:
character set = ISO8859-1
codepage = CP850
I could read an write files with umlauts from my Win2k Client. Doing an
ls at the linux console showed a ? (question mark) instead the umlaut,
but using mc (Midnight Commander) shows the right char. I was quite
happy with this setup.
Now, with samba 3.0.0final-1 (from Debian/sarge), I tried

Trouble with charsets on samba4
Hello
I have much trouble with german umlauts.
I've installed samba4 as a DC in an existing Windows Domain. The first join I made with a blank smb4.conf
"samba-tool domain join DOMAIN DC -UAdministrator%Passwort --realm=DOMAIN.LOCAL --server=windows-dc.domain.local --use-ntvfs"
It works fine and everything is synced.
On the share we have directories and files with german umlauts.

Transferring a dataset from WINXP to Mac - problems with umlauts
Dear R-Help,
is it possible to correctly display umlauts in a dataset, which has been created under WINXP, on a Mac-system?
This is the problem:
I have imported a German MS-Access database into R 2.14.1 by using RODBC on a WINXP-System. It runs with a Latin-1 encoding (codepage 1252). However, most of the work is done with a Mac (UTF-8 encoding) and the R-dataset has been transferred to the MAC.

German umlaut in xlab
Dear all,
which font do I have to choose to use German umlauts at x/ylab in plot? Do I
have to change Rdevga; and how? Or should I use these Hershey vectors?
I looked quite a long time for a solution, which should be easy, so I
thought I'd better ask here.
Maybe some other people have already solved this problem.
Regards,
Petra

SOLVED: importing huge XML-Files -- new problem: special characters
Hi all,
thanks to the people who replied to my question! I finally solved the
issue by writing own handlers and using xmlEventParse - which leads
to the following problem which is so odd that its probably a bug.
I use several special charachter in my XML-File, e.g. umlauts or ? or
? - but no matter how I encode my XML (UTF or ISO) or I escape these
characters xmlEventParse always stops

problem with postcript() and umlauts
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hello,
I am running R 2.01 on SuSE 9.2 and I use GNU-Emacs and ESS.
When using umlauts like ?? ?? ?? ?? for e.g. plot titles , I enter them
directly in the code, like
plot(seq(from=-4,to=4,length=100),dnorm(seq(from=-4,to=4,length=100)),main="Gau??-Verteilung")
I get a dotted box just after the "Gau" and before the "??"

Locale problem with umlauts in factor levels in 2.7.0 (patched) from grid or lattice
With 2.7.0 patched (not tested with 2.0.0), I get an error message in a

[LLVMdev] Question about non-UTF-8 filesystems
Hi,
it seems that e.g. on Windows, where the filename encoding is not UTF-8, it is impossible
to use any filenames containing e.g. german umlauts or chinese characters, because
the in LLVM used encoding collides with the encoding used by the OS.
There is a open bug for this http://llvm.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=10348
It seems there were patches submitted to fix it, but they were never applied as

Comment fields don't like accents!
Anyone know, under Linux, how to get accents (hoping for u with an
umlaut, for example) into a comment field? They're happily in the
comment file I'm using as a source (or on the command line), but they
get translated into # either when I do vorbiscomment -a or
vorbiscomment -l (not sure which, but XMMS also sees # instead of the
right char, which implies the first).
