Strangest thing (crond every 5 min.)
Hi, I've installed CentOS-4 4 days ago. Now, every 5 minutes, crond opens and close a root session, with no other info. Example: Apr 14 16:25:01 tux crond(pam_unix)[4031]: session opened for user root by (uid=0) Apr 14 16:25:02 tux crond(pam_unix)[4031]: session closed for user root Every five minutes the same thing. I have nothing in /etc/crontab that makes such a thing. Does anyone

2.5.1p1 logout hangs after RHL crond start
The RHL 6.2 command "/etc/rc.d/init.d/crond start" prevents clean logout from compiled version of OpenSSH-2.5.1p1 on all hosts. The command "/etc/rc.d/init.d/crond stop" is OK. This occurs for interactive or command line requests. ssh remotehost /etc/rc.d/init.d/crond stop --- works every time ssh remotehost /etc/rc.d/init.d/crond start --- hangs every time Control-C will

crond sometimes launches a child process?
Hi All. I monitor number of crond processes on my machines. On one of them I have 2 crond processes for a short period of time (few minutes) everyday. It is at the same time when one jobs starts to run - a sphinx indexer. What are the possible causes of crond running a child crond process? Best regards, Rafal.

redirect crond(pam_unix) syslog messages
Hi guys: I could only find one answer for this topic via google, and the poster wasnt' sure if he was breaking something with his "fix". I there a way to redirect the cron session messages from syslog to a different log? i.e.: Aug 15 01:03:01 tn1 crond(pam_unix)[29303]: session opened for user root by (uid=0) Aug 15 01:03:07 tn1 crond(pam_unix)[29303]: session closed for user root

CentOS 3 -> logins
Hi, Since I upgraded CentOS from 3 to 4, I get those enties in logwatch. It seems to be caused by cron, opening a session everytime it executes a task. Is that normal? crond: Unknown Entries: session closed for user root: 381 Time(s) session opened for user root by (uid=0): 379 Time(s) session closed for user user: 239 Time(s) session opened for user user by (uid=0):

Separate list for political/philosophical discussion
Hi, How about creating another mailing list to let people vent themselves? It would make it easier for everyone, since technical/troubleshooting issues and opinions target different people. This messages is a test as well. I couldn't write to the list through gmane so I corrected the address with gmane admin. Hope this works. Regards,

Putting /etc in cvs
Hi, I'd like to put my servers' config files in cvs to make it easier to manage (yes, I know about Cfengine). I've been looking for a tutorial and I could find any, and since I'm not a CVS guru, I tried a few things, without even knowing if I'm doing it right. Any hints? Regards, -- Ugo -> Please don't send a copy of your reply by e-mail. I read the list.

EL5.1 client problems
Hi all, I attempted to add an EL5.1 client to our puppet server (EL5), and after signing the client cert, got the error "Certificates were not trusted: hostname not match with the server certificate" I found the mailing list discussion and the relevant page: http://www.reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/RubySSL-2007-006 As far as I can tell, my puppermaster''s cert CN matches

Scripting port scans
Hi, I need to test one specific port on a serie of Ip addresses that I own, I thought about using nmap or telnet, but both return the same value, no matter if the port is open or filtered. Anyone has an idea, before I start scripting to analyse the output of the command? Regards, Ugo

Not booting without keyboad.
Hi, I'm running CentOS 3 on a Dell celeron 500/256 MB. It won't boot without a keyboard and that is a problem for me. I know it is not a perfect setup, but I'd like to have it boot w/o a keyboard. The Bios doesn't seem to care too much about the fact that no keyboard is plugged in, as it loads Grub and starts booting the kernel. It hangs, usually around Total HugeTLB memory

Hang when run via crond
Greetings, I apologize if this has been answered before, but I have tried to do the obligatory search and haven't found a clear answer. Running OpenSSH 3.4 (well, pretty much any version) using protocol 2 and run via crond we see the connection never "close", "end", or whatever you wish to call it. This is running on a "modified" RedHat 6.2 machine. configure

SMB server with CentOS 4
Hi, I need to set up a small server for a group of ~10 employees (all using Windows 2000/XP, used to use a windows 2000/exchange setup). I have a linux server already running CentOS 4, so I'd like to do all I can with this. I thought about using Samba for file/print sharing and OpenXchange (commercial version) to have a nice collaborative/mail/calendar/etc server. Of course, it would
