I suspect that xapian-compact.cc (and quartzcompact.cc if you can be
bothered) will also need fixing since they use off_t. You need to make
sure that the stat() function called

Deleted documents not deleted
I seem to be seeing cases where I call db.delete_document(somedocid) with
no error, then flush() and delete the database object, but the document is
still there after process exit. The write lock is normally deleted, so it
appears that the database close finished normally.
If I then then call delete_document(somedocid) from another
command/process, this time it goes away.
I've been seeing

For the record, Mark just reported this to me under windows so it was a
problem there too, but it does work under GCC 4.1. No idea which

Need info on chert and flint
Hi,
I am new to xapian and read somewhere that xapain was using flint before
released version 1.1 now it is using chert.
I am looking for differences between both flint vs chert respective to
xapian and advantages of chert.
thanks

BUG IN XAPIAN_FLUSH_THRESHOLD
There is is bug when setting XAPIAN_FLUSH_THRESHOLD=20000000
When trying for force Xapian flush documents to flush after 20 million
documents Xapian ignores the size and flush it after only 10,000
documents.
Data captured from delve after 60 seconds interval when has been set as follow:
XAPIAN_FLUSH_THRESHOLD=20000000
perl -e ' while(1) { system("delve ."); sleep(60); } '

(Solved) Re: How to configure omega.cgi to search multiple flint dbs?
Folks,
OK found it, omega.cc looks for multiple DB definitions and adds it to the search list. If the dbs are only one directory lower (e.g. not in default as in beta/default, but only "beta"), then modifying database_dir setting as follows will work:
database_dir /svr/hda1/xapian
then,
./omega.cgi 'P=pda' FMT='xml' DB="beta" DB="gamma"

xapian-compact seg faulting & Re: Error msg xapian-compact: The revision being read has been discarded - you should call Xapian::Database::reopen() and retry the operation
I am fairly confident that these issues are related to killing the scriptindex process ungracefully causing blocks that were queued for writing to disk to not get written. I mention to send you the file because it could be that you would see almost immediately with the situation is.
Thanks

Flint failed to deliver indexing performance to Quartz.
Flint failed to deliver indexing performance to Quartz.
I am proposing to remove Flint as default database and place Quartz
database back as default. The catch is not that Flint database is
smaller and faster during searches then Quartz database as developers
were concerning when were measuring and neglecting to measure
performance when creating the large indexes.
The truth is that Flint

chert vs flint vs lucene
Hi,
What's the main difference between chert and flint? What above vs lucene?
I am mainly asking about data structure (lexicon, posting list, document
data), what's in memory, what's on disk, hash vs b-tree and reasons behind
them.
Any pointer is appreciated.
Thanks!

"Value in posting list too large" error with 1.1.4 (chert and brass, not flint)
Hi,
I've a program which:
1. Sets XAPIAN_FLUSH_THRESHOLD=1000
2. Opens a (new) database for write
3. Indexes a few thousand documents
4. Periodically also does queries on the database
With 1.1.4, with certain document sets (basically a particular mail
folder of mine), Enquire.get_mset() sometimes (but not always) triggers
a "RangeError: Value in posting list too

uint4 in quartz/flint
We have:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
typedef unsigned long uint4;
----------------------------------------------------------------------
which on an LP64 system is a lie. If uint4 is used on disk (and it's
used in the btree implementation) then it would make the databases
unportable, which probably isn't a good idea (unless we already have

xapian error
Just got this error when replacing (updating) a document in the xapian
index (using php bindings):
Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'Exception' with message 'DatabaseError:

Does anyone know what this means exactly?

xapian porting to Interix / conclusion
Report by Eric Lindblad 14-09-2015
http://www.ericlindblad.blogspot.com
cf: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.search.xapian.general/9880
The 'gmake check' compile error on xapian-core-1.2.21/tests/api_backend.cc was resolved by the modification (at the suggestion of a mailing-list member) of the offending string from "q.OP_PHRASE" to "Xapian::Query::OP_PHRASE".

Xapian core dumping on Solaris
Hi everyone,
I'm having a problem with xapian (the matchspy branch, with Python
bindings) on Solaris 10 / SPARC. Users can run queries for a few hours
with no problems, then it returns "inflate failed (invalid code
lengths set)" to Python and dumps core. gdb reports:
#0 0xfe6dc910 in inflate_table () from /usr/lib/libz.so.1
#1 0xfe6d9d6c in inflate () from /usr/lib/libz.so.1

Support for backends in Search::Xapian
The attached adds XS wrappers for back-ends:
use Search::Xapian;
my $db = Search::Xapian::Remote::open_writable( "biggles", 10252 );
my $db = Search::Xapian::Flint::open_writable( "testdb" );
my $db = Search::Xapian::InMemory::open_writable();
All the best,
Tim.
