Inotify max_user_instances
Maybe I have multiple problems - dunno.
I've started seeing the following log lines:
Mar 7 07:46:22 bubba dovecot: imap(dmiller at amfes.com): Warning: Inotify
instance limit for user 5000 (UID vmail) exceeded, disabling. Increase
/proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_instances
max_user_instances is currently 128.
I've tried stopping and restarting dovecot - the message immediately
returns.

inotify max_user instances
Hello,
Timo, last year when you remoted into our server and performed the
migration from courier-imap, we ran into this issue, and you solved it
by doing:
echo 1024 > /proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_instances
Then you said you were going to solve this permanently by changing the
init script...
Here is what you said (this is from the skype chat):

Inotify instance limit for user exceeded, disabling.
Hi.
What does the warning "Inotify instance limit for user exceeded,
disabling." mean, and how do I get rid of it? I assume that I have to
change a limit somewhere?
Regards,
Anders.

Spool is on network attached storage (Coraid).
File system is ext4 (mounted with noatime).
Problem appears almost every morning (while load is normal during afternoon).
I suspect that this can be related to some

Hitting wall at 2048 IMAP connections
We are gradually rolling out Dovecot (IMAP only, no POP3) to our
customer base. We are replicating between a pair of CentOS 7 boxes.
All has been working wonderfully. However, to be sure our rollout
continues to go smoothly, we put together a simple benchmark client
program to fire up X persistent IMAP connections (using hundreds of
mailboxes) that login, list the folders, select the

IDLE with inotify problem
Hi,
I recently switched from courier imap to dovecot. With courier I had
a working IDLE setup that informed me immediately when new mail
arrived. With Dovecot it is different, sometimes i get an immediate
result but most of the time it takes a rather long time for the
notification to return to the client.
For testing purposes I set mailbox_idle_check_interval = 1 and i now
get the same

inotify on rhel systems?
I just read an interesting article caleed "Monitor Linux file system
events with inotify.", see
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-inotify.html?ca=dgr-lnxw02Inotify.
I notice that /dev/inotify is not present on my CentOS4 system, so the
necessary kernel patches are probably not present.
Does anyone know if there are any plans afoot to provide this
functionality for

limit for user exceeded
Hi
I Dont understand or? I im thinking wrong:
process_limit = 25000
Older:
#fs.inotify.max_user_watches= 8192
#fs.inotify.max_user_instances = 16384
New:
fs.inotify.max_user_instances = 8192
?
fs.inotify.max_user_watches= process_limit x 2 + fs.inotify.max_user_instances
fs.inotify.max_user_watches= 58192

*notify config for 1.0.x doesn't enable inotify
hi,
the current code has changed include linux/inotify.h to sys/inotify.h since
2006-01-17, but that won't work with inotify*.h as documented in the wiki.
One has to either revert back to linux/inotify.h, or add
#include <sys/inotify-syscalls.h>
to both configure.in and src/lib/ioloop-notify-inotify.c
Or, just symlink sys/inotify.h -> linux/inotify.h.
That's on Debian 3.1

inotify.h not found
Hi,
dovecot (1.0.alpha5) won't compile with inotify support because
inotify.h can't be found. I'm running Linux 2.6.15-rc5 with headers
from 2.6.12 (like most vendors). I've noticed that beagle and other
inotify-enabled applications ships with an inotify.h. Could this be
scheduled for alpha6? :-)
