CentOS 5 + Nforce 4 SLI Intel SATA problems
I've been having an extremely hard time using the on board SATA controller on my nvidia based board. I have two 160gig Maxtor SATA drives attached to the on board controller, setup as software raid0. The problem is the array is extremely unreliable, where I'm getting constant I/O errors like: sd 0:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x00040000 end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector

Tyan K8SE (S2892) / nForce Pro Experiences
Has anyone installed Linux (CentOS or other) on a Tyan K8SE (S2892) motherboard? I'd really like to hear your experiences -- with this board or Nvidia's nForce Pro chipset in general. I'm looking to build a new server using this board but would like to find some other experiences first. I've googled myself blue but haven't found any reviews or postings regarding this

SWAT is working but shows smbd/nmbd: not running
Hi all, I had nForce3 motherboard that has broken. Than I bought nForce4 motherboard. I connected old hard disk to this new nForce4 motherboard. For net and sound support I download drivers from nvidia.com site. This driver asks kernel source to be on local disk and gcc compiler. After I installed kernel source and gcc, driver is successfully installed. >From that point (but maybe it is

ZFS works in waves
A little back story: I have a Norco DS-1220, a 12 bay SATA box, it is connected to eSATA (SiI3124) via PCI-X two drives are straight connections, then the other two ports go to 5x multipliers within the box. My needs/hopes for this was using 12 500GB drives and ZFS make a very large & simple data dump spot on my network for other servers to rsync to daily & use zfs snapshots for

Tyan K8SE (S2892) / nForce Pro Experiences (Clarification)

Hot swap SATA?
Should it be possible to hot-swap SATA drives with Centos5? It doesn't seem to work on my system. Removing an unmounted drive locked the system up, and leaving one out at bootup makes the devices change names and keeps grub from finding /boot on a scsi drive that is shifted up. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell at gmail.com

CentOS 4 and SATA RAID
There have been several threads about SATA in the past weeks and the problems with it. I'm still not clear, though, if SATA in general is a problem or just specific functionality or hardware. Do I understand correctly that "mainboard built-in" SATA RAID is a nono on CentOS? That I would need a third-party RAID card for this? What about SATA non-RAID or SATA2? Is SATA supposed to

startx reboots my computer
Well, sometimes startx reboots my computer. Other times is does nothing except slow it to a halt for a while. Sometimes is locks up. I am using init level 3. At the command line, everything looks fine, and I can do whatever commands I want. When I type startx, then things go down the tubes. What doesn't happen: X never starts No error messages get posted to dmesg no log is generated in

"dumb" SATA controller recommendation
Just wondering if any 4.2 users out there have a favourite "dumb" PCI controller to add a couple of SATA ports to a motherboard that doesn't include SATA support. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just 2 SATA ports that a recent vintage kernel will recognize without a lot of configuration gymnastics. The intended use is for relatively light weight internet browser

Looking for motherboard/chipset experience, again
What about the Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard? It has 7 SATA ports, supports ECC memory, socket AM2, generally looks very attractive for my home storage server. Except that it, and the nvidia nForce 570-SLI it''s built on, don''t seem to be on the HCL. I''m hoping that''s just "yet", not reported yet. Anybody run Solaris on it? Or at least on any

Problem with secondary sata controller
I am having problems getting my 64-bit Debian Squeeze (Xen version 4.0, Linux Kernel 2.6.32) dom0 to recognize a harddrive connected to a secondary sata controller. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-X79-UP4 and has two sata controllers. The first is controlled by an Intel X79 chipset and the second is controlled by a Marvell 88SE9172 chip. During the initial install of Debian everything is fine and

CentOS 4.4 32 bits not recognizing disks
Hi, I have to install this server with an Intel motherboard ASUS, model P5VDC-MX. It has a VIA hardware RAID controller model VT-8251. The two hard drives are SATA (don't know if II) and are Maxtor STM380211AS. Problem is that CentOS installation doesn't recognize any hard drives at all. The BIOS setup doesn't have an option to turn off SATA. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance. --

Opteron Mobo Suggestions
I've been planning to build a dual Opteron server for awhile. I'd like to get people's suggestions on a suitable motherboard. I've looked at the Tyan K8SE (S2892) and K8SRE (S2891) but would like to find more Linux-specific experiences with these boards. Some features I expect are at least 4 SATA (SATA-300?) ports, serial console support in the BIOS, USB 2.0 and IEEE-1394

MCP55 SATA data corruption in FreeBSD 7
I am having problems with silent data corruption on (some) drives connected to an MCP55 SATA controller. I have two servers, both running RELENG_7_0/amd64. One has the 570 Ultra chipset, the other has 570 SLI. Both chipsets have the MCP55 SATA controller. The server with 570 Ultra chipset has a bunch of older 250GB SATA-150 drives hooked up to the MCP55 controller and it is working just fine.

Centos 4.4 install on ASUS A8V-VM does not find SATA drives
Yes, I know someone last week asked a similar question (Problem with ASUS P5VD2-X X SATA II) but the only answer I saw on that thread was the equivalent of "I've heard it's bad so I won't do it." Unfortunately, that doesn't help me much. The BIOS does indeed recognise my two SATA hard drives, and I've got the BIOS set to "IDE" (which disables

Does CentOS 4 work well with SATA drives? Or should I build the system using IDE/PATA disks? I'm looking for stability more than speed. Thanks Charles L. Centos 5.2 and 2.6.18-92 Kernel backported SATA fixes?
Last year to get motherboards with the G33 chipset with SATA working with Centos I had to either use David Harbic fixes or use Fedora 8 since it had the later 2.6.25 kernel. I no longer see David's fixes available and also see in the 5.2 release notes "update SATA driver and infrastructure". Did Redhat finally incorporate fixes to full support the new G33 chipset and SATA? I have
