Recommended REPO Setup for Desktop on Cos5
CentOS is simply great. I use it as my main desktop. I use VMWare clients for any "special needs" software. I am struggling a bit with the plethora of repos and looking for some advice. Would you opine with detail on the best repo setup for a desktop CentOS 5? Comments: rpmforge provides fine rpms. kbsingh, google, adobe, kde-redhat, CentOS-Testing , CentOS-fastrack, epel,

Recent CentOS4 kernel updates and CentOS Plus
If it wouldn't be too much trouble ... when a kernel security update notice is posted to the announcements list, would it be possible to indicate whether the centosplus kernel is also susceptible to the security issue being patched? I'm running the plus kernel now, and find myself wondering whether I will ever need to back off to the base kernel because of security issues. Or is it

Centosplus & CentOS Extras, Enlarge your tent
I think Jim (the other one) is doing a marvellous job with extras and plus but he needs to expand the size of his tent. A sensible package policy in extras/plus repo will mean fewer temptations to install 3rd party repo's that can break your system. Some of the packages i would like to see are :- - MySQL 5 rpms - php 5 rpms (already provided) - Open Office 2.0 rpms - webmin - rkhunter -

additional yum repos for 4.3
Hi; On my Fedora Systems [/etc/yum.repos.d] I have the following repos: dag.repo dries.repo fedora-extras.repo fedora.repo fedora-updates.repo freshrpms.repo livna.repo Two questions: 1) Where can I get a .repo file (with centos url's of course) for the baseic stuff like updates and extras. 1b) Can I use redhat repos? 2) What about the other guys, livna, dag, dries, freshrpms. Which one of

Small correction in CentOSPlus (AdditionalResources/Repositories/CentOSPlus)
Hi, Small correction there. Example 4 of section 2 (how to use XFS with CentOSPlus kernel) says you should use this configuration line in [centosplus] section of yum: includepkgs=kernel* xfs* dmapi* However, the XFS module's package name is kmod-xfs*, so I believe it should actually be: includepkgs=kernel* kmod-xfs* xfs* dmapi* I did this on a system of mine, and in the first case it did

CentOS 5 - base kernel vs. centosplus for XFS
I notice that the same versions of kmod-xfs and xfsprogs etc. are in both the extras and centosplus repositories for centos5. Is there any particular reason to use the centosplus kernel if what I'm primarily interested in is XFS filesystem support? I presume that if I am using the plus kernel, then I must use the plus versions of kmod-xfs etc., but I'm wondering whether I need the plus

4.4 update quits unexpectedly
After 2 good updates to 4.4, my 3rd is giving me trouble. I did all 3 installs the same: yum clean all yum update python-sqlite sqlite yum yum clean all yum upgrade This one, however, quits during the header download. I get "[Errno -1] Header not complete, trying another mirror", then "[Errno 256] No more mirrors to try". I am not going thru a proxy, and I can't find

How do I revert back to a non-CentOSPlus install?
I installed PHP 5.0.4 from the CentOSPlus repo a week ago, but now the yum cronjob seems to have upgraded to a new kernel, a new MySQL and god knows what else. Big mistake. How do I (safely) revert back to the stock CentOS 4.3 rpms? I want to keep PHP 5.0.4, but that's it. Is there a cleaner way than uninstalling the rpms, editing the repo file and the (re)installing from base? I just

how to protect RT repository?
I'm following the instructions on this URL http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/RT_3.4.x_On_CentOS_4.x and came across the part that said "WARNING: RT overwrites some packages from the base distribution, especially mod_perl" How exactly do I "protect" the RT repository? It links to the "ProtectBase" program http://wiki.centos.org/PackageManagement/Yum/ProtectBase

RFI: Information for Centos 4 unsupported kernels
Hi, this may sound stupid, but; - I'd like to install unsupported x86/i386 smp kernel because I need some support (for eg. dual booting for r/w files for winXP) etc. I'm now using 4.3 latest smp kernel. (I've tested that x86 still runs better than x86_64 like I was told in January. Thanks for the advice.) Questions: Is there any documentation for how to install unsupported smp

Seamonkey
I saw the latest update announcements on the announce list, so I ran "yum check-update" and did not see seamonkey in the list. Which I guess makes sense, since it's a name change from mozilla. However, devhelp is in the list, and "yum update devhelp" pulls in seamonkey as a dependency. This seems like a sort of backdoor way to get seamonkey onto the system. Did these

What's wrong with yum-priorities?
"The upstream maintainer of yum, Seth Vidal, had the following to say about 'yum priorities' in September 2009: Gosh, I hope people do not set up yum priorities. There are so many things about priorities that make me cringe all over. It could just be that it reminds me of apt 'pinning' and that makes me want to hurl." This note was placed on the wiki

Clarification in HowTos/MigrationGuide page
Hi, A little more of clarification :) ... In some wiki pages say that the protectbase and priorities yum plugins can not be used together. It seems that the next paragraph must be updated: ====> Always beware when using/mixing 3rd-party repos. The yum protectbase and/or priorities plugins are your friends. Although both can be used together, using protectbase is probably unnecessary if
