STATUS command and total/read message count
Hello, I'm running Dovecot 1.0.15 with Thunderbird 3.0.1. TB can query folders for messages in two ways: Either by using the STATUS command, or by opening the folder (don't know the respective IMAP commands, sorry...). Querying via opening the folder is reliable, but via the STATUS command, only new/unread messages are shown. If I want to have the total number of (unread) mesages in a

distribute/deploy software to clients
Hello, I run a Windows domain based on Samba 3 and I am searching for a way to distribute/deploy software to clients. I.e., a user logging on to a client, software should be automatically installed or upgraded. Is there any common solution? I heard of MSI packages, but I don't know if it is necessary to create MSI packages of all installations... Thanks Florian

purge maildir folder after sa-learn
Hello, I am looking for a command-line utility to automatically purge one Maildir folder. I want to periodically run sa-learn from cron, and after the spam learning folder has been added to the Bayes database, its contents should be deleted. I've searched a bit, but only found a few old utilities or some telnet+expect scripts, which both didn't look too reliable. Is there any

PDC for XP: empty desktop and desktop.ini showing up
Hello there, I'm trying to set up Samba as a PDC for Windows XP Professional (SP2). It seems to work fine. Machine accounts are created automatically, passwords between Unix and Samba users get synced, I can logon, profile directories are created - but there's a problem. I know that this is well-known, but it drives me crazy and I don't know any solution. First of all, the

Where are Windows file permissions stored and how to change them?

IDLE with inotify problem
Hi, I recently switched from courier imap to dovecot. With courier I had a working IDLE setup that informed me immediately when new mail arrived. With Dovecot it is different, sometimes i get an immediate result but most of the time it takes a rather long time for the notification to return to the client. For testing purposes I set mailbox_idle_check_interval = 1 and i now get the same

HOWTO for setting up Samba as a PDC
Hello fellow list members, does anyone knows of a good HOWTO (or a book) for setting up Samba as a PDC? I have been dealing around with the Samba HOWTO collection, but to be honest, this is a hard job. There are some errors in it and descriptions are not this good. I even don't know what all the tools are for. I'm really experienced in Linux server stuff, but this one drives me mad.

[PATCH] Better detection for ioloop and notify
Hi List! Attached is a patch to configure.in to test that epoll, poll, inotify, kqueue and dnotify actually work. It also attempts to select the best one for you if none specified. This supercedes my previous patch in the re beta9 thread. Hopefully get this in Gentoo's beta9 ebuild soon. Thanks -- Roy Marples <uberlord@gentoo.org> Gentoo/Linux Developer (baselayout, networking)

Steroids for Rsync!
I've been researching the state of 'file alteration monitoring' technology on Linux. Famd uses dnotify to inefficently monitor a handful of directories. The replacement for dnotify is being worked on in the kenel and it's called inotify. If I understand it correctly and they get it finished, it would be an awesome addition to rsync. With it, you could run rsync to update a

querying the ext3 journal
I'm not sure if this question makes sense, but here goes. We have the need to periodically check for newly created/modified files in a rather elaborate and well populated directory structure. I don't believe that simply walking the directory and checking stat's is the answer, given that I need a process that will impose minimal performance degredation on the system. Would it be

how to get Windows to notice unix-based delete command (inotify)
Hi there We have a Samba-based "upload server" where people put files to be processed. Anyway, when they upload files, a Unix-based script runs and moves the files off. However, the Windows explorer app doesn't "notice" the removal, and the user still sees the files. If they F5/refresh explorer, the files indeed have disappeared. If I have two explorer windows open
