new mailing list - advocacy@xiph.org
We've had a few requests for a place where advocacy efforts can be discussed. I've created a new mailing list, advocacy@xiph.org. This is going to be a place where we: - discuss adoption strategies - coordinate vendor support requests - help coordinate promotion activity I encourage everyone who is interested in promoting, advocating and evangelizing Vorbis, Icecast and other Xiph.org

Support .cda as input files
Hi again list, I have given the matter of supporting .cda as input format some more thought. What I wanted was an easier way to do drag 'n' drop music files from CDs onto the local system and then have those files encoded with FLAC. As of now most operating systems displays files on CDs as .cda. (Which has later been clarified not to even be a format.) I think that what I actually

New around - some questions (Cortado, editing Theora)
Hello, I am maintaining different resources related to Ogg Theora, both as a user and as a contributor to several local advocacy groups. I had a couple of questions: - Who should I ask / talk to about financing improvements to the Cortado applet (namely: bigger / more visible controls for the seek functions) ? - Are there any simple Ogg Theora editing tools or applications, similar to avidemux

Agent 4.0 and wine
I have been running Agent3.3 uner Linux debian sarge, wine 0.0.20050310-1.2, fake windows partition. Absolutely no problems, even when tackling large groups like binaries or advocacy. But the upgrade to V4 did not go well. I went back to 3.3 and managed to reproduce under reduced conditions: * Created a new, vanilla user called gorby * Created a new fake windows setup with a vanilla

[LLVMdev] glasgow haskell appears to be adopting LLVM
everyone-- File this under Advocacy. See this thread <http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/glasgow-haskell-users/2010-February/018425.html> for more information, but the short summary is that they're deprecating their old "compile to GCC" backend in favor of David Terei's new LLVM backend. They're still planning for their C-- backend to be the primary backend for native

tshirt design needed
I've copied vorbis@xiph on this message simply because it will be interesting there, but also to give those who haven't yet subscribed to the advocacy list a taste of the things that (should) happen there. As you know we are planning to sell vorbis shirts, both to promote the vorbis format and to raise some money for the Xiph.org Foundation. I have been talking to an online retailer

Man pages for Linux distributions
Given that R is being written under the GNU GPL, a corollary process would be sufficient documentation of R (in packaged distributions) that explains HOW-TO install, use, and extend R. An example of documentation that is extensive is Perl which has documentation under the MAN pages in Unix,Linux as well as in POD (Plain Old Documents) files. The key to R advocacy is documentation. As

Microsoft RTAudio
Hello Monty: I'm OK with not continuing this on the Speex tech list. In fact, I've deliberately responded off list to the various posters. I do think, though, that your admonitions to be non political should go to both sides ... that Jean-Marc founded Speex doesn't give him license to denigrate other efforts. Thomas Leigh asked a perfectly legitimate question and Jean-Marc's

Make --html4tags the default?
Seeing how no-one should send application/xhtml+xml to the browser [1], and development of the HTML standard is again happening [2], it would make sense to have Markdown.pl default to HTML tags. Maybe too late to change a default though. How does PHP Markdown and other implementations deal with this issue? [1]: http://www.hixie.ch/advocacy/xhtml [2]:

Samba Usage (University especially)
Our usage of Samba is being questioned with regards to being "non-standard" as against Windows NT servers. As the Samba Survey has been defunct for a while, I wonder if: a) there is any suitable advocacy document listing large and famous users of Samba? b) If not I would be happy to summarise responses from those prepared to go public. I am especially interested in Universities and

Participation on Samba lists
Luke Leighton (lkcl) has brought up his arguments about control of Samba before. In October 2000 they resulted in the creation of a new Samba code branch, samba-tng, which Luke and others who agreed with his direction were free to do with as they will. Samba-tng still exists, and we in the Samba Team still wish it well, but what we can't continue to put up with is Luke still rehashing the
