Alert icon for yum
Hi all. I have a simple question: CentOS relies mostly on "yum" to keep systems up to date, although I understand that like on RHEL, "up2date" is also available. On my system I've run both KDE and GNOME as Graphical Desktops under X (though I presently run GNOME), and I've noticed that there is an applet called "CentOS Network Alert Icon" (from the

Hello all, I am new to the list so bear with me. I am testing dovecot out on a test server running RHEL ES 3, I have installed 0.99.14-1.1.el3 and 1.0-0_20.rc7.el3. This server is using the mbox mailbox format, running sendmail, procmail, and using PAM to do authentication to an LDAP server. I get varying results between the two version. 0.99.14-1.1.el3 : Upon installing this I leave

Compiling kernel 2.6.12.2 with gcc-3.4.3-22.1
Hi. I just have a quick question that maybe some of you might know. I'm thinking of compiling a new kernel (kernel 2.6.12.2) for my system which is running CentOS 4 (updated to 4.1 using yum). I downloaded the kernel tarball and read in the docs that for stability gcc 2.95.x (x>=3) might be best to compile the new kernel. With an "rpm -q gcc" command I see that I have

Problems under Redhat EL3 and ext3
I am running into performance issues with ext3. Historically we had our image files (pictures of cars, currently 5.3 million) sub divided into a directory structure [0-9]/[0-9]/[0-9]/[0-9], where we would take the first 4 letters/numbers of the file name and use that to put it into this structure. Letters [a-cA-C] would become a 0, [d-fD-F] a 1, etc. As the file names used to be based on VIN

Printing from apps as a regular user...
Hi. I mostly use my system as a super-user and so I can mostly do everything without worrying too much about permissions. Not too long ago I created a "general" user account which is automatically logged in after a few seconds for others to have (limited) access to the system. Mostly everything works (ie. CD/DVD writing, sound, floppy access, etc.) But when it comes to printing, only

Printing problem
Hi. I've been running CentOS 4 since it was released (since 4.0). I did a fresh install and have kept it updated using up2date and yum so at present my system is running CentOS 4.2. I mostly use my system as a super-user and so I can mostly do everything without worrying too much about permissions. Not too long ago I created a "general" user account which is automatically logged

Configuring a Kodak EZ200 Webcam in CentOS 4.3
Hi. I hate to ask because I'm not sure if this is one of those questions that don't "deserve an answer" but here goes: My friend gave me a Kodak EZ-200 Webcam (USB) recently and I'm trying to configure it for use under CentOS 4.3. I did a little research on the web and found that the Kodak EZ200 is supported using gphoto2

Squirrel 1.4.8-8.el3.centos.1
Hi, Last tuesday I upgraded squirrelmail on two centos-3 mailservers. squirrelmail-1.4.8-8.el3.centos.1, 2.4.21-58.ELsmp, CentOS release 3.9, httpd 2.0.46 Since then I have some users who have problems with their sessions. They are logout out every now and them, and some sent mails have another user address in the From header. It looks like squirrel is mixing up sessions? Those users have used

mdadm raid 1 question
Does Centos 4.2 have the grub issue where the boot loader does not get installed onto both hard disks in a software Raid 1 environment? if so does 4.3 solve that issue? -- My "Foundation" verse: Isa 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. Terms..?
I read this list often, and although I'm not smart enough to contribute, I learn a lot every day. But I read a post from this morning that contained this: >a fair amount of jiggery-pokery Just wondering...is this a technical term? Where is it documented? I won't offer any insight into what vision it gave me. ;-) Thanks for all the work on the distribution and all the invaluable

Tripwire for CentOS
Hi, I literally have about 36 machines running CentOS on a private network, and will probably change the remaining 30 or so away from Whitebox or RH in the near term. One thing I just noticed was when I tried to search out Tripwire RPM's, that none seemed evident. Can anyone point me in the direction of an Tripwire RPM that works with CentOS 4.3, or advise me on how to create one from the

32->64 bit
Is it possible to take a Centos 3.7 machine - that was installed with the 32 bit version of CentOS, and update it to a 64 bit kernel? In other words - convert an i386 to ia64. I don't care about the applications, just the kernel. -Mark

Installing a RPM with yum
Hi all, this is my first post... Here the situation, I've installed php 4 with yum, using the default CentOS repositories, but now I realize that I need the Informix extensions and others like unixodbc, gd etc. This last two packages where in the repository so I search with yum and I found them, and install them, but not the Informix one. So here my question, when I install a RPM package,

Latest x86_64 != latest i386 packages?
I have CentOS 4.3 on two machines, one i386 (3.0GHz P4) and one x86_64 (2.6GHz Opteron). Both have centos-release-4-3.2 autoconf-2.59-5 However, on the i386: perl-5.8.5-34.RHEL4 Whereas on the x86_64: perl-5.8.5-24.RHEL4 Is this really correct? I ask because when I attempt to recompile zsh on the x86_64 box, I unaccountably get this error: Can't locate object method "path" via

yum and python. grief and grief. CentOS 4.3
Hello. Maybe after work with FreeBSD I become too spoilt, but I expect that packages from one distribution kit works among themselves well. But that I see: $ rpm -qa | grep rpm rpm-libs-4.3.13_nonptl rpm-python-4.3.13_nonptl rpm-4.3.13_nonptl rpm-build-4.3.13_nonptl $python >>> import rpm ImportError /usr/lib/librpm-4.3.so: undefined symbol: rpm_execcon Thanks.

Kernel build on i386 and nohighmem forbidden?
I looked in the release notes, but maybe I missed it. Is it not possible to build a kernel from CentOS 4.3 (using 2.6.9-34.0.1) with HIGHMEM support turned off? This is for a machine with 512mb. When I try to build the kernel, I get _etext undefined symbol on line 100 of pageattr.c in arch/i386/mm. Linus
