More Migration Questions
Hello, I was on here a month or two ago asking lots of questions about migrating from uw-imapd/qpopper/mbox to dovecot/maildir. I am now at the stage where i'm trying to convert all my emails, but i have a few questions... Where should i convert my mbox mailboxes into? "/home/username/Maildir/" or "/somewhere/maildirs/"? Does it actually matter? Is there a standard

Enabling security on POP3 and IMAP
Hello, Currently, on our new test server, I am offering IMAP on 143 and POP3 on 110. We would like to enable security on both of these protocols to attempt to eliminate the risk from an internal password-grabbing/content-grabbing attack. I presume this would mean enabling SSL, and a more securure authentication, right? Or are plain text passwords just sent over the SSL, and therefore perfectly

Dbox and Exim
The Dovecot wiki [1] doesn't list either Exim, Postfix or anything else as supporting the dbox. I did some searching in the Exim archives and have found only one message mentioning dbox, sdbox or mdbox. [2] I think an RFC would go a long way towards getting the format supported. Has Timo, or anyone else, considered submitting an RFC to the IETF? My question was how are we going to use it

dbox - how to awaken the monster
Hello people, Since the invention of this storage called dbox, I have never quite gotten round to understanding it, nor getting to use it. It seems so strange to me and I must ask a few stupid questions about it. I use the MTA to deliver mail to Maildir, either in ~/Maildir or /some/path/%d/%n/Maildir. It has always beat me how dbox comes into play under such circumstances. From the wiki, I see

Plan/Status of MBX support?
Hi, All, I've been happy user of dovocot as far. It is easy to configure, reliable and secure. Hat off to all developers who make this possible! I know dovecot is on the mailbox format front, it supports both mbox and maildir format well, and is developing and experimenting a new flexible format, dbox. But is there any plan to add mbx (i.e., indexed mbox format) support, to complete

APC Smart-UPS 1000 RM USB problems with newhidups
Well, after our first real extended power outage, I found out that even though the UPS 1000 RM is recognized okay, it does not work properly. It never seems to see any change in UPS status. It looks very similar to the other issue I reported with the APC CyberFort 350. I never was able to get to the bottom of the CyberFort issue, but I'll bet it's the same issue as we have with the

[PATCH] Fix for client certificate validation does not work
Hi all, As I reported earlier (with a typo in the work [BUG]) client certification validation *does not* work even if you do everything exactly according to all documentation and attempts at helpful advice. I have seen this issue with both startssl.com and self-signed certificates, and based on what I've seen from searching the web, this is a problem that has gotten little attention because

Question about indexes and maildir/sdbox/mdbox
Hello We are now running dovecot 2.0.9 with indexes in a ram disk and maildir storage in a test system. We have the following questions: - If there is a power outage / kernel crash, we will lose the content of ramdisk. We have tested that indexes are regenerated when a user logs in via imap, so e-mail access will be "slower" after a power outage / kernel crash, but

What's a Reasonable Inbox Size?
Greetings, I have several users who have inboxes that are over 20 GB. Lately I have noticed Dovecot logs say it's taking over 30 seconds to sync their mailboxes. As email admins,? how do you handle inboxes that are so large? Do you use mailbox types that have better performance like dbox? We're using maildir. What's a reasonable inbox size?? Is 20+ GB reasonable and nothing to

Package management
Anyone care to share how they handle yum updates? We have a script that runs yum update nightly and then emails us the results when there are packages to be updated. Ideally I''d like a way to keep a class in site.pp that can be uncommented to run yum update -y after the update list is reviewed by a human. Tim

Couldn't set transaction log view (seq 9..13)
Hello, I'm using 2.2.13 on Debian stable, and I perform regular dsync backups. Typically if there is an error, dsync can recover from it the next time it is run, but I've been encountering a new error that doesn't seem to self-heal: # /usr/bin/dsync -u gae backup ssh -i /root/.ssh/id_rsa backmaildir at internal.example /usr/bin/dsync -u micah dsync-remote(micah): Error:

mbox vs maildir
I'm using Dovecot 1.0.1-12 on Linux/Fedora 7 along with sendmail and procmail all running on the same box mail is stored in mbox format It's a small system with a half dozen or so e-mail "accounts". Each with 40-60MB of messages in various folders. I keep seeing messages about how mbox is antiquated and anybody with more than 100 messages etc should not use mbox, but use

Overly long email of miscellaneous Dovecot migration questions
Hello to the list! I've been asked to spec out the feasibility and, if feasible, plan a migration from Courier to Dovecot for both POP3 and IMAP for about 4 million mailboxes. I've been trying to absorb all the dovecot-related info I could over the past couple of weeks from the docs and from the list and I'm sure that I've muddled at least some of it, so apologies in advance if I

Mailbox & Server Down
My mailboxes are on a Dovecot (IMAP) server. On DNS there is an MX record pointing to the server. To read the mail I use Roundcube. If the server is down, I lose the new mail. I would like to do two things, alternatively. First option.1) I keeep the mail on the provider's server, restoring the original MX record.2) Dovecot does not receive the mail, but should go to download it.3) I can access

Dovecot performance on GFS clustered filesystem
Hello All, We are using Dovecot 1.1.3 to serve IMAP on a pair of clustered Postfix servers which share a fiber array via the GFS clustered filesystem. This all works very well for the most part, with the exception that certain operations are so inefficient on GFS that they generate significant I/O load and hurt performance. We are using the Maildir format on disk. We're also using

Dbox Upgrade Problem With MAILBOXDIR
Hi. Trying to upgrade from Dovecot 1.1.11 to 1.1.13 but having a problem with imap process segfaulting. Backtrace is below. I presume it's related to these MAILBOXDIR changes but the only documentation is the single line in the news for changing to ":MAILBOXDIR=mailboxes" when using dbox. Current configuration is "mail_location = dbox:~/Mail" so what exactly should be

User-Oriented Management of Asterisk
While I was away on vacation, buried deeply in another thread (New Asterisk bounty: SIP simultaneous), Olle E. Johansson raised a question which is close to my heart - Asterisk's management model. A management model which simply manages telephone extensions and dial plans is irrelevant to most organisations. We need a model which manages users and their interaction with the PBX. I am
