Java JDK on CentOS 4.4
I did not choose Java when I installed CentOS 4.4 and I want to install
a JDK to do Java programming. What is the default Java JDK for CentOS
4.4 ? I see under YumEx very little which looks like a Java JDK. Is
there one in the distribution ? Is there a way to get Sun's latest JDK 5
installed safely and successfully on CentOS 4.4, perhaps via an RPM for
it tailored to CentOS 4.4, or should

Java headaches
I lost my harddrive, and have had to reinstall. This time, I am being a
bit smarter on imaging, but still got to get things installed...
Installing Freemind. It needs Java JRE.
So after lots of pain, and reading past messages, I got
jre-1_5_0_09-linux-i586.rpm from sun and installed it.
Then I tried to follow Jim Perrin's recommendation to install from
jpackage.org the

Newer GNOME than base release
I have asked about this before, but I don't have a workable answer yet.
I would like to know if there is a way to install a more recent GNOME
package on CentOS 5.x than 2.16.0.
1) GNOME Bugzilla does not support this version any more - all bugs go
into the bit bucket.
2) Having been exposed to Fedora 8 at work and seeing how much more
flexible GNOME 2.22 is, I would REALLY like to take a

updating base kernel when plus kernel installed
A while ago I installed 2.6.9-nnnn.plus.c4 (nnnn means version at that
time, now at 42.0.2), but I have to boot with the base kernel, as the
plus kernel does not seem to work with my Atheros card/drivers.
Right now my base kernel is at: 2.6.9-34.0.2.EL and I have this feeling
that is quite behind the current rev.
I cannot figure out how to get kernel.i686 to upgrade. I can't even

How is this possible?
As an experiment, I am attempting to build a more recent version of
GNOME than 2.16.0 on CentOS 5.1. I've tried both garnome and jhbuild,
and neither one works quite right. Jhbuild blows out looking for a
dbus-glib-1 revision >= 0/74 (the release rev is 0.70), so I
downloaded that and tried to build it. This results in the following
error:
gcc -g -O2 -Wall -Wchar-subscripts

java-1.4.2-gcj-compat.i386 update failure
Hmmm,
I seemed to have created a misalignmnet somewhere along the line. I
can't remember doing anything to this. But at one time I did try to test
the java open source. Posted my results to the list, got no response,
abandoned all hope and went on my merry way. I don't know if this is
related.
I have installed an rpm for a java needed by an application I run. It

Yumex in 6.5 minimal -
When I start yumex as user it displays but stops with an error message
that the backend is not running.
However "yumex --root" starts and runs normally.
It is Centos 6.5 64 bit and using XFCE running in virtualbox if that
matters.
Any suggestion as to what I am missing?

Installing java on CentOS 5
strugging with things here...
tried tracking the info on the Wiki (which apparently is now in need of
a maintainer)...
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/JavaOnCentOS
My primary interest is using Xalan/Saxon/xslt/xsl-fo docbook generation.
I was thinking that all I really need is jre but downloaded both jre and
jdk just in case.
can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? (after removing both jdk

No Package Manager? (Where's YumEx)
Hi List,
This morning while setting up C6 on my laptop this morning I attempted
to download and install Yumex, but the repos returned no results for
this package. Has this been discontinued and if so, what package manager
should I be looking for?
thanks,

I personaly do not care, but in case i make a libguestfs-git PKBUILD,
I want everything be OK.
I just realised than I followed the libguestfs PKGBUILD, but NO
virt-p2v and virt-v2v binaries are installed in /usr/bin.
Shame. I am rewriting the git PKGBUILD.

each and every time i run yum or yumex, system time is advanced
by 5 hours.

yum = 3.2.29
yumex = 3.0.5
for awhile, i did not mind resetting clock when i noticed it off.
now, it is a pita because when i forget, emails and what ever else
i am doing get wrong time stamps.
