Sending email with IMAP instead of SMTP?
Here's a kind of "outside the box" thought. Why not extend the IMAP protocol to send email? Instead of having to use SMTP if an addition were made to the IMAP protocol then IMAP could transport outgoing mail to the server the same way it moves messages to the server. On the server end Dovecot would deliver outgoing email to the host MTA via localhost:25. The advantage would be

Sending email using IMAP
This is something for after the 1.0 release but I think it's important and I'm going to try to figure out how to make it happen. I'd like to see some way to pass outgoing email from Thunderbird back to dovecot through some new command that we would have to make up. Email would be sent back over the IMAP connection and when Dovecot gets it dovecot would hand it off to an SMTP

Thinking Outside the Box - Extending IMAP
Here's some thoughts I'd like to throw out there. I know it's not standard IMAP protocol but someone has to try new ideas first and I want to see what people (Timo) think of this. IMAP establishes a connection between the client and the server. Wouldn't it be great if it could be a conduit to let custom Thunderbird plugins talk to custom server application over the IMAP

Maildir feature I'd like to see - SSD for newer messages
SSD drives are very fast but expensive. So I have a crude idea that I'd like to see. May not be practical but would like to get some thoughts on it. Some new SSDs use SATA 3 (6gb/sec) with 355/mb/sec read speeds and 215MB/sec write. Put these in raid 0 and it screams! Can you imagine how fast that would be? What would be nice is if new email were on faster drives with old email being

dovecot panic after upgrade 1.0.15 to 1.1.2
I recently upgraded dovecot from 1.0.15 to 1.1.2 and since then I am getting the following types of things in the logs: Aug 21 17:23:13 mail1 dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<myuser>, method=PLAIN, rip=172.16.78.20, lip=172.16.78.22 Aug 21 17:24:01 mail1 dovecot: Panic: IMAP(myuser): file index-sync.c: line 39 (index_mailbox_set_recent_uid): assertion failed:

RC10 errors
I just installed a limited test of RC10 last night. So far, all is great except for errors being logged for one user (out of about 150 users total). This one user has not yet complained or anything, but the log file has repeated entries of the following format for him (host and username changed to protect the guilty/innocent): Oct 24 06:13:02 mail dovecot: IMAP(username): file

Email client dowloads previously read messages as new during migration.
I am migrating from UW to dovecot and using mbox. I have been able to find mbox to maildir migration information and tools; however, I have had little luck finding any tool or information for performing such a migration where I wish to keep mbox. ( I know I should migrate to MailDir, but in the case I wish to take baby steps.) I have setup dovecot pop3 communication and I go to my email client

Experience moving mailboxes from Dovecot 0.99.14 to Dovecot 1.07 => Improvement possible
Hi, This small mail to share my observation about a recent move of mailboxes between two servers and ask about explanation and/or improvement about UIDL in dovecot. SV1 : Dovecot 0.99.14 / Red Hat Fedore Core 4 SV2 : Dovecot 1.07 / CentOS 5.2 Mailboxes in /var/spool/mail on the twoo servers. Test will be done with outlook express with option "leave message on server" checked. Goal is

HA Dovecot Config?
Hi! I'm currently running Dovecot 1.1.8 on a HP server using CentOS 5.2 as my IMAP server, receiving mail from postfix, and also using squirrelmail as the frontend. As I look at upgrading the mail server, I'd like to change to a higher availability configuration (where the server can fail and I don't have to reconfig my imap users). For the SMTP that's easy, because I can

Phantom email message
Got sort of a strange problem on one email account. Everything works fine with Thunderbird/IMAP showing the correct unread message count. But on my DroidX smartphone one of my email accounts always shows one unread message, but I can't bring any unread messages up. It's like there's something there making it think there's a message when there isn't. The email client is K-9

Using MySQL to store email?
So Timo, Have you considered the idea of storing all the email in a MySQL database? Seems to me that MySQL could somplify all the backend stuff that everyone struggles with and with replication one could create very massive and reliable systems. What would it take to use MySQL that way?

Gary Stainburn wrote: > Bad news Guys, they've just moved the emails to somewhere else and have > started again: <snip> A suggestion: there should be a way to filter using *domain* AND mailhost; that is, if emails come from a domain, and through one mailhost, then block the domain. If many domains, and the same mailhost, only then block the mailhost. I've been thinking about

Saving Direct to Shared Mailbox (Was: Re: Sending email over IMAP?)
Thinking along similar lines to this sending email via IMAP... What I am thinking, is using Shared Folders/Mailbox's, like mailing lists. We have the power of ACL's, and if you have the appropriate permissions, you can 'append' emails to the folder. Except, when you think of a mailing list, you usually just hit reply. One of the projects I am working on, will be setup with a

Odd Feature Request - RBL blacklist lookup to prevent authentication
I would like to have a list of IPs (hacker list) that I can do a lookup on so that if anyone tries to authenticate to dovecot they always fail if they are on my list. I have the list - and the list is available as a DNS blacklist. I'd like to have it work with both local IP lists or RBL lookup. The idea is so hackers from known IP addresses never succeed. If Dovecot provides the feature

Will pay $500 towards a Dovecot feature
10 days ago I proposed this addition (see below) to Dovecot and got a lot of positive response. I would like to make it happen. I'm willing to contribute $500 to the development of this feature. It doesn't have to be implemented perfectly but needs to be workable to the extent that I can telnet into the Dovecot server and run it manually from the command line. I want to at least be

scalability
Hi Folks, How scalable is dovecot. Do you think a machine with a dual core 2.8Ghz processor and 2GB of RAM would do a business with 600 users? This server will have a 100Mbps link to the net, however it will be access by the business using a couple of ADSL lines (Roughly 7Mbps each). This machine will also be running Postfix Your help is appreciated Cheers Jonny

Best filesystem?
Hi everyone! What's the best filesystem to use for the mail spool? I'm debating between Debian with xfs or FreeBSD with zfs. I'm not sure which way to go. I'm migrating from cyrus. I have about 50 users so it's not a large setup. Cheers! Monika -- Monika Janek Systems Administrator, Side Effects Software Toronto, Ontario Canada 416-504-9876 x207 www.sidefx.com

Applying a DNS RBL to deny authentication?
Hope to get some attention about this idea to reduce hacking passwords. Here is a list of about 700,000 IP addresses that are hacking passwords through SMTP AUTH http://ipadmin.junkemailfilter.com/auth-hack.txt This is a list of IP addresses that attempted to authenticate against my fake AUTH advertizing on servers with no authentication. We do front end spam filtering for thousands of

Dovecot Authentication through different IMAP server?
Just wondering - is there any way for a dovecot server to authenticate against a different IMAP server? Here's what I'm thinking. I run a spam filtering service and thinking about a way to give users access to their stored spam on my servers. However real email is forwarded to their server, So I'm wondering if I can configure dovecot somehow to do a back end authentication to

First time Dovecot user, really impressed so far. What is best IMAP enabled webmail package to go with Dovecot?
Greetings everyone, I'm new to the list as of today. I just installed Dovecot a couple of days ago for the first time, Debian Lenny Dovecot v1.0.15-2.3. So far I'm pretty impressed. I'm using mbox format with Dovecot auto-deciding to place mail in user home directories, which is great. It works very well with the Win32 Thunderbird 3 client over a small basic 100FDX switched net.
